If youre reading this, its likely that you are about to write an amazing review-or-are looking for a great place to eat. Heres the low-down: House of Shah is absolutely amazing, from the moment of stepping through the doors you are immediately greeted by smells of distant lands and smiles of happy, warm staff. When its time to belly up to the register (its counter service), make sure to ask for Sal or his beautiful wife Juliana. Hell gladly take you on a tour of the menu. Finding out what you like and suggesting from their array of dishes to choose from to find your perfect meal. When its time to find a seat you choose from takeout, seated inside, or to enjoy the beautiful weather on House of Shahs intimate patio overlooking downtown Woodland. While you cant go wrong with any choice on the menu, I ordered the Sirloin kebob while my wife ordered the Chicken kebob. (a tough decision since everything on the menu is delicious) Both were seasoned and cooked perfectly, served with salad, rice, naan and two dipping sauces. (If you want the secret sauce, youll have to ask about the jalapeno Serrano garlic sauce) After mopping my plate clean with naan(my wife easily had left-overs) we considered dessert. Afghan ice cream sundae. Vanilla ice cream topped with pistachios and rice noodles, ending with sweet cream and rose water. While exiting and once again, receiving a warm goodbye, we took a lap around downtown woodland before heading back to Sacramento.

Unpretentious little Afghanistan restaurant. I understand there have been problems in the past, but they sure seem to understand the issues around gluten free now. Many of their items are in fact gluten free, and the staff are knowledgeable about it. When I asked if the Chicken Kabuli (really great, by the way) was gluten free, she looked it up on a card under the register. The card was a menu with hand written notes about gluten and dairy in their products. She marked up a take out menu for me identifying the gluten free options.

Im always one for design and House of Shah has one of those beautiful, woody, indie vibes that makes for a calming atmosphere while you enjoy some really good food. I went basic American and got the kabob burger with Shah fries, but it was so good and you could tell the buns and fries were made fresh in house. The flavour profile was bright and spicy, especially with the jalapeño and cilantro on the fries. The price was moderate, but you get what you pay for.

I realize this restaurant is new and just getting started. I requested gluten free (I have celiacs) but they put gave me the wrong dish and put bread on it. I requested a new dish but instead the bread was only removed. Id give it another try once they get things figured out.
