The menu was promising, but the execution failed, and not in an "off night" kind of way; rather, fundamentally in a bad recipe way. The items were virtually flavorless, from their specialty "tinga", served in place of complimentary chips and salsa, to tacos to tamales. Ive eaten Mexican food prepared by mexicans in homes, and in restaurants from CA to AZ to NM, to Mexico and across the country to the east coast and never had worse food. Another reviewer described the chicken as tasting canned. I would agree and also Mexican street tacos are NEVER prepared with shredded, boiled chicken even if it was made in house. Any supermarket salsa would be better than what was served in little plastic cups. Bless their hearts.

My wife and I are practical regulars at Tamales Restaurant in Onalaska. It took us a while before we finally stopped in after it opened because of work schedules, but once we did - we were hooked! Weve eaten Hispanic and Mexican cuisine from some of the other Mexican restaurants in town, and theyre good; but Tamales is where its at! Delicious flavor profiles in each dish from traditional Mexican cooking is beyond compare. Each bite is a sampling of the vitality and wholesome nature of the Mexican culture that Ive heard my wife talk about from the years her family lived down on-base in El Paso - seeing blend of Mexican and American culture. After eating here - its hard going anywhere else

Went a month or so ago with my wife and it was good. We both had pozole, some asada tacos, and guacamole dip. The tacos were especially good. Only negative was getting charged extra for chips - felt like getting nickel and dimed (why not just charge a little more for entrees if the margins are that thin?). Also, this isnt a negative but the wait staff seemed a bit new/awkward. Im sure theyll get more comfortable over time. Will definitely be back! Happy to see new independent restaurants in Onalaska. Was a little dismayed when we moved here a year ago with the city being dominated by chain restaurants. Lets support the independents!

For Wisconsin, this place ranks about #3 on my list. Ive had some very poor attempts at authentic Mexican food, this place was not one of them. Is there better out there? Yes, yes there is. BUT, for the options avaliable near this area, its a great place to dine. If your American, I get it, youre probably going order a burrito or chimichanga. I assure you, most Mexicans dont order either of those often. There are plenty of Mexican dishes to order from here. My wife and I enjoyed about 4 of them. Although we werent in awe, we were not met with disappointment. We will be coming back!

Worst food and service period. Made a complaint to the waitress that the Tamale was not good. Also had chicken in my fried chicken taco that was blue in color. She brought the bill and the Tamale was still on the check so I asked for it to be taken off because it was not eaten. She then proceeded to yell at us in front of other customers about how she "is sick of customers complaining about the food when the cook is in the kitchen all day making it". Wow! Will never go back not only because of the food, but because of this very rude waitress

Would give 0 stars. Walked in and ordered the nachos. The cheese was either velveeta or canned nacho cheese. It tasted absolutely disgusting! Serving this cheese in the middle of Wisconsin should be a crime. This place is supposed to be a authentic Mexican restaurant too. Besides the food, the service was overall bad. When we walked in, the server/hostess pretended not to even see us. We had to wait another 5-10 minutes even to get water. I will never go again. Senor Villa or Iguanas is the way to go.

I was excited to have new Mexican place close by. I only went once, and dont feel the need to go back. Everything I got was dry and flavor list. I called it in, and picked it up. The only reason Im giving two stars is because the staff was friendly.

I have been going regularly since Tamales opened. I have never had trouble with my food and think it tastes great. The owners are an absolutely wonderful family and the servers are pleasant. I will continue to patronize a locally owned business.

The food was extremely bland and flavorless for Mexican. Ordered a chimichanga and I got something looking more like a quesadilla. Very disappointing. The only thing good was the service. The waitress was friendly.

The food is ok, nothing outstanding for sure but definitely edible. We have eaten there 5 times now, tonight was the best, 4 stars, but the other times 3 stars. Since they are new maybe they are getting better?
