I have visited this restaurant on a couple of occasions and in general liked it well enough. Last week I took couple of friends there but had a completely different experience, resulting in enough dissatisfaction from all of us significant to warn others to stay away. I ordered a two meat platter . Listed on the menu at 12.95. I asked for brisket and ribs specifically asking for "bark" or outside crusty pieces. I was asked what sides (plural) I wanted, I ordered beans and collards assuming it came with two choices. As I paid the bill the cashier announced my tab was just under $19.00 ! Evidently they charged me another 3.00 plus for "extra side item and get this... another 1.00 for a plastic cup for water ! My friend had ordered just a sandwich for about 8.99 but somehow ended up paying about $12.50. I only had a twenty dollar bill in cash on me so I declined to leave a tip as this was a to go order anyhow not tableside waitress service. I assume that must have ticked off the heavyset counter lady. As moments later as I was reviewing the contents of my order trying to understand the pricing discrepancy, I realize she had shorted me on the order of cornbread which supposedly came with. I went back to the counter asked the clerk if my order was supposed to get bread and she said Yes, but make no effort to get the missing item. What a rip off! Food wise, the ribs were tasty but the brisket was so stiff, hard and dryer out, I nearly choked trying to get it down, the collards so salty as to be almost inedible. With so many other good BBQ places in vah beach . Do yourself a favor and go to anywhere else. Consider the fact they charge for a plastic cup for water is enough to make me want to boycott the place. For almost 20 bucks I could have gotten a nice rib eye at outback where at least they dont rip you off for a cup of water. Sorry for the rant, a very unpleasant experience overall. Pc

WOW!!! I decided to go to Carolina Son BBQ since going to Wal Mart grocery always seems to have the delectable aroma of BBQ when going from vehicle to store. Ive eaten a LOT of BBQ. This place is stellar!!!! I wish I had taken pictures. I will admit, I was a little put off (as I always am by BBQ prices) but after tasting the BBQ, the beans, the cornbread. ...I am convinced this guy is a worker of just AMAZING!!! The BBQ itself is beyond incredible!! The cornbread, while I am not crazy about it being cool/cold; Tasted so good!!! The beans...really, really good. A bourbon taste I think!?!? . Make sure you find the counter in the back...so many GREAT BBQ sauces. . Interesting, tasty, a little zing here and there. Really a lot of variety and tastes. The reason I have changed from 5 star to 3 is due to 1 little issue. They charge extra for everything. If you get a to-go tray, $1.00 extra for the container to go in. If you have 2 to-go meals, $2.00 extra for the containers, etc... When you nickel and dime your customers for everything, you drive business away. Why not start charging for using the toilets? ? How about a rental fee on a table or booth. Hey, the little to-go cups for your sauces...they should be at least .20 cents piece. I think you fail to understand that by someone getting a to-go container is off-setting the cost of labor, water to clean dinner plates. STOP BEING PETTY AND CHEAP!! Youre ruining a good thing. Until you change your nickel and dime structure, there is a lot of competition around that does not think that they need to charge for everything.

Today is my day off, so I am trying out a great place recommended by my friends, Joshua Ramos and his wife, Ashley Nicole Ramos. Its a mom and pop barbeque spot located in Virginia Beach called, "Carolina Son." What do I think? Well, I had a choice of three meats, so I had the brisket, baby back ribs and meatloaf deal. Delicious! The briskets had a nice fatty and smokey taste. They were buttery thick and moist. The mash potatoes were homemade and had a nice, creamy texture. And, the meatloaft had a certain profound flame broiled taste, but not overwhelming. Mmmm, that was really good. Now, the ribs were just right and, I mean, at the right temperature and at the right cut. Try smothering them with a flavorful blend of a citrus and smokey habanero sauce and you will experience a tangy and sweet welcoming flavor. "Carolina Son" is impressive! Thanks, Josh and Ash, for telling me this place existed! I gave it five stars on "Yelp!"

Handsdown the best BBQ in Hampton Roads! As hard as it is to say I think are even better than Southlands. They also had the best collie greens Ive ever had. I travel the south east for a living and my father is a chef so I dont take food lightly when I say its the best, ecspecially when it comes to BBQ. I had the brisket my wife had the bbq both were amazing, and as a carb watcher I personally enjoyed that they offered a lettuce wrap option. The corn bread was excellent and the collie greens were out of this world, they were so good I almost ordered more to take home. The choice in sauce was excellent. This will be a new food staple for my family and I hopefully for years to come. The owners are also phenomenal, and the chefs been BBQing since 1972. Watch out Hampton Roads this place is going to take the area by storm.

Hands down, best BBQ restaurant Ive ever been to. For my boyfriends and my first time, we each got the 3 meat tray to try a little of everything. Each tray came with a piece of cornbread and your choice of side, of which there are many to choose from. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and willing to answer any questions we had, and came to our table to check on us multiple times. Our food was ready before we even finished paying and it was all perfectly cooked. I could go on and on about their fried ocra, and I normally dont even like it that much! You literally cannot go wrong in this place. 20/10. Definitely will return.

Family owned establishment that smokes their own meat and makes all their sides. Everything Ive had hear is great. They have pulled pork, brisket, ribs, beer can chicken, and smoked meat loaf, and they generally have daily specials. Everytime Ive been here the pit master (and I believe the owner) is right there too greet you, get your order, and answer any questions you might have. Ive been there several times and have never been disappointed.
