This restaurant has got it right. Their food it prepared wonderfully. We have been coming here for years...and have never had any food that we didnt like. Reading a lot of reviews after a latest visit today and would like to let others know they ARE in fact open on Saturdays...not sure why it says otherwise...as far as bus boys and sanitation...people dont come here for atmosphere...they did not bring us dirty used napkins as someone else previously stated in their review...we have never been given dirty napkins and I have never seen at ANY restaurant a bus boy wearing gloves... For those of you who say its NOT authentic...if you think you know better than dont come back. We are NOT in New York..thank goodness..we are in ROANOKE VA...really be reasonable. The items are NOT overpriced...subway is...a good $13.00 easy and for what...New Yorker is well with the price...better quality and better tasting food for less. And the cheese cake...nuff said!

ON SATURDAY FEB 28TH, 2015, MY HUSBAND AND I WENT THERE TO EAT. THE SANDWICH WAS GOOD, HOWEVER THE SANITARY ISSUES ARE BAD. I WATCHED THE GUY THAT BUSSES THE TABLES, AND CLEANS THE BATHROOMS TAKING THE UNUSED NAPKINS FROM THE TABLES AND PUTTING THEM IN A TRAY TO REUSE. NOW THIS MAN USED HIS BARE HANDS TO CLEAN THE TABLES, WHICH INCLUDES TOUCHING THE LEFT OVER FOOD AND DIRTY UTENSILS, HE THEN TOUCHED THESE NAPKINS AND PUT THEM ASIDE FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO USE. I OBSERVED HIM CARRYING THE NAPKINS IN THE BACK TO REUSE. WHAT IF HE PICKED UP DISEASES, GERMS AND GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE? THEN I OBSERVED THE MEAT CUTTERS EATING MEAT AND DRINKING FROM AN OPEN CONTAINER. WHERE IS THE ROANOKE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AT????

Today I visited the Deli. I have been a loyal customer since the old building. Time has changed as in owners or relatives running it. The sub buns have changed and the meats have been cut back. The NEW PLACE have since gone down. Its just a dull place to eat. The plants need water. It needs a change, sitting outside would be nice enclosed. Such a waste. The have the owners picture on the wall and I know he would be disappointed, I am. Moving on I Visited again, what is it. The desserts are not right. I WOULD RATHER MAKE CUSTOMERS HAPPY PAY MORE, YES PAY MORE THEN GIVE US SOME MESS. JUST LOW QUALITY

The ceiling was filthy. Outdated decor and menu. Also, staff was unfriendly. When I ordered, it was like I was speaking another language, because I thought that you could order somerhing off the menu. I was just met with a dumbfounded stare. My sandwhichs bread was stale and tasted like it was mivrowaved, and it was a steak roll, not sandwich bread. The cheese was stale also. As I was leaving, I looked in the dessert case, and the "amazing" cheescake had an orangish tinge. I definitley breathed a sigh of relief when I got out of there. Please, if you ever plan on going here, reconsider!!!

It is a very unique experience to eat a New Yorker submarine sandwich - like nothing youve ever had before, I promise you! I have been eating at the New Yorker all of my life! It is the best sub shop & deli around. I sometimes wonder if even the best New York delis could compete! You get a huge sandwich for under $5 that tastes like a million bucks! Just remember to bring cash (although a 20 will cover 2 people w/ 2 full size subs, drinks, appetizer & youll still have change!) since they do not accept plastic - in order to keep their prices down.

This place is AMAZING!!! The best sandwiches around if you are in the area you must STOP trust me its well worth it! If you ever want a delicious extremely hearty Ruben or Sub this place has you covered. I grew up in Philadelphia and can attest to what I believe is a quality and delicious hoagie and this place ranks high for me. Great great deli, great prices, excellent mouthwatering cheesecakes.....you hungry yet? TRY THIS PLACE OUT YOU WONT REGRET IT Best Bets: Rubens, Subs/Hoagies, German Potato Salad, Deserts (especially Cheesecake)

They say a "picture paints a thousand words"...if that were so, then there would be a thousand pictures I could paint to describe the wonderful experience I had at the New Yorker Delicatessen in Roanoke, VA! The service from the second I walked in the door to the second I left the restaurant was top notch! And the food....unequaled anywhere! The subs are amazing and they are huge! But, you dont pay a huge price for them....they only take cash to keep their prices low.....gotta try it...its the best kept secret in Roanoke!

Out of this world good sandwiches. Never had better. Honestly I have to say I could eat these until the end of my days.Just a little thing. The service is sometimes slacking. Ive visited on 3 separate occasions and on the last occasion the staff was less than friendly. They didnt smile at all or even make eye contact. It was a guy probably 6 ft tall. I want to say his name was Eric but Im not sure. Anyway the service was horrible. Honestly you have to pick it up. I left feeling uncomfortable because of this guy.

I LOVE New Yorker average cost for large sub $6.00, piled high with meat and delicious. I have tried them all but my favorite is the Submarine with the slaw on the side. I tell them up front to bag half to go cause I cant eat it all....AWESOME....great potato salad too. The service is always great as well. THEY DONT take debit or credit cards though so make sure to take CASH, the only thing I dont like, but maybe that keeps the cost down.

Worst food poisoning Ive ever had. My friend and I met there for lunch Friday and we both became sick shortly after. Its been days and Im still not back to normal. I am going through the proper channels to make a formal complaint with the health department. Nothing in the restaurant seems clean. I used to go to the New Yorker often and enjoyed it but havent been in a few years. I was excited to go back but I never will again.

We live in WV but always come to the New Yorker everytime we are in Roanoke. Have even made a special trip just to come and get a sub. Its always been great. The wait staff has always been wonderful to us. My husband is in the hospital in Roanoke now, and is saying when he gets out, weve got to get a sub before going home! Cant say enough good about it.

Darned good, but not great food served to you from 1953. When I visited there were only two women as customers and only one person who was not white. I was the youngest man there at 47 years old. HUGE, filling sandwiches, great pickles, incredibly wide selection. Retro as all get out. Bring cash because they dont take anything else. Worth a stop.

It was good. Not great. The sandwich was huge and I was impressed when it came out but it wasnt as tasty as some other area delis. Now to be fair I just tried a ham and Swiss sub and maybe something else would have been much better. I did get a slice of cheesecake and it was delicious. Prices were reasonable. I may try them again.
