SORRY THIS IS A LONG REVIEW BUT THATS HOW LONG THIS HORRIBLE PROCESS TOOK... Short Version: LOVED: Their mudslide cupcakes, the others are just okay (dont waste the money) HATED: Their customer service, their rude staff, the fact that I was never able to speak with a manager, and the fact that I couldnt get a custom order made for my daughters 1st birthday. Long version... So my mother and I were on Cary street going to World of Mirth and we ended up parking about two blocks down in front of Carytown Cupcakes. After we had finished shopping for my daughters birthday we decided to stop in and grab something quick. I got their Mudslide and Carrot Cake cupcakes and my mother got their Lemon and Strawberry. The Mudslide was AMAZING the other three were just okay. So I decided that I wanted to order the Mudslide cupcake for my daughters sweets table at her birthday (were talking 36 cupcakes which at their rates would be about $100 not including taxes and labor). So here my experience with attempting this apparently impossible feat went.... Day 1: I called to place the order and was told that if they did it I would have to buy the whole batch because it was a specialty cupcake and they made different cupcakes depending on the month. I informed the young lady that this was absolutely not a problem and she said one of the cooks would call me back later that afternoon with details; I received no such call. Day 2: NO CALL Day 3: I was about to call them just to check and see if this was going to be possible when my phone rings and its Carytown Cupcakes. I was expecting for this to be a call from one of the cooks but nope it was the same young lady from before telling me that I could only order their in stock cupcakes for the month of August....FORGET THAT! If I wanted one of those I would order one of those but if I am sitting here saying "heres my money take what you need and make what I want" then I dont feel there should have been a problem. So as soon as I got off the phone with her I went to another cupcake shop got exactly what I wanted and spent a fraction of what I would have payed doing so at Carytown Cupcakes. If the manager of Carytown Cupcakes gets a chance to read this I have some words of advice. 1: Hire some better staff, because the ones you have are not helpful what so ever and act like they dont even really want to even be there. 2: If a person calls with a custom order have a manager there for that person to speak with, because if the young lady I spoke with was correct and you wont do a custom order then thats a largely profitable population that you all are missing out on/ ignoring in general.

My sister had ordered a 6 inch cutting cake and 120 cupcakes for my wedding back in May. This review isnt so much about the cake/cupcakes, but more so about the customer service of this place. Upon booking with Carytown, my sister had sent photos of exactly what I wanted including color of the frosting, design, etc. My color theme was a lavender/lilac color (light purple) and the photos that were sent reflected this. Walking into my reception for my wedding, my sister, husband and I notice that the icing of the cake and cupcakes was not a light purple... it was blue! Not even close to the lilac color I wanted. After the wedding, my sister contacted Carytown cupcakes several times about the icing of the cake being the completely wrong color, and every time she was ignored! No one acknowledged her complaint nor did they do anything about it. They told my sister "we just assumed you didnt want anything to be done". How do you just assume a customer wants nothing done when you dont even acknowledge the customers complaint? We were very angry with this. Despite the color of the icing being wrong on my wedding day, my sister decided to do business with them again and order a replica of my cutting cake from my wedding (since the first one went missing). She setup a time and day for the cake to be delivered, and told them to please deliver it by 5:00pm since nobody would be home before that to bring the cake inside, considering it was really hot outside. My sister gets a call on May 31 around 3:45pm that the cake was delivered and they left it on the stoop.. in 85 degree weather! Since no one would be home until 5:00pm, by the time I got home one side of the cake was melted off since it had been sitting in the hot sun for over an hour. My sister complained a 2nd time after still going back to do business with them after the first incident. Not once were they helpful, apologetic or sincere in wanting to work with my sister to address these issues. The customer service of this business is awful and all they care about is getting their money. Its safe to say my family and I will NEVER go back to Carytown Cupcakes again.

Never again will I come here. My 3 sons and I walked in and were trying to decide what we wanted to try. My 14 year old asked for the 2 he wanted and the girl boxing the cupcakes hands the box to the girl working the register and gives him the total. Did she not just see that we were all together and trying to decide what we wanted. I tell her we are all together and Im purchasing more. She (girl boxing the cupcakes) looked like she had an problem that I said something. My 16 year old and I question what some of the flavors were and the girl on the register is the only one answering us, as the other girl looks on with a puss on her face. When we were complete we had a total of 9. The girl at the register informs me of the total, I look at the wall and see the price for a dozen and thought I might as well purchase a dozen. The girl boxing the cupcakes again looks like she has an attitude. She grabs a cupcake and somehow gets it on her shirt and in her face you can see shes pissed and cuts her eyes at me. I payed for them and could not wait to get out of this shop and I felt the feelings of we as customers were reciprocated. Had it not been for my family having a taste for cupcakes this evening and me carrying my sick 2 year old that had just came out the hospital a day before having surgery, I would have told them to take them back and refund my money. Now with all thay said about the horrible service, I felt the same about the cupcakes. We did not like them and I wish I would have just went to the shop across from the mall in Chesterfield. At least there you are greeted, given a description of the cupcakes and all with a smile and respect. I WILL NEVER COME BACK, with such poor service. Even if I liked them, nothing can bring me back to service this poor!!!!

Do NOT waste your time and come to this place. We just moved to richmond and wanted to explore the area. It was our first and last time here. The staff is rude as hell and the place is ghetto. I bought my wife half dozen of cupcakes because shes got a sweet tooth. While we were picking out flavors in line, the lady helping us (think she was the manager), treated us like we were a nuisance and like we were just bugging the hell out of her. She acted really impatient as if we were taking forever to pick just 6 cupcakes. First off, there arent many flavors to begin with and we took less than 20 seconds to pick all 6. Secondly, the place is filthy with cupcake crumbs everywhere and it was just a mess. When I was paying at the register, I asked for a bag to put the cupcakes in, and the employee gave me a KROGERS GROCERY BAG. How do you charge $2.75 per cupcake and hand out Krogers grocery bags? This business must not be doing well for them to take grocery bags and hand them to cupcake customers. This was bizarre. The best cupcakes my wife and I have eaten are from GEORGETOWN CUPCAKES in D.C. Carytown cupcakes is a joke. Carytown cupcakes were a joke. The mix from a box are more moist compared to theirs. It was DRY. I couldnt pick it up without crumbs falling everywhere. The taste is horrible, the icing for the cupcakes were hard as a rock. They need to find something else to do because cupcakes isnt their forte.
