Will not go back, will not recommend. UPDATE RESPONSE: [no matter how you spin it, sir. That was not an acceptable service that night. Everything that I stated here is facts and there are time stamps to prove such. You are entitled to your opinion as well as I am, which is why I even post reviews. I will not be pushed into thinking that the service you gave is acceptable. This establishment needs improvement and it should start with the people running it. Somehow, the "only" table that we took only sat 2 people (we made it seat all 4 of us), was enough for your 5-9 costumers that were constantly standing in line. Yes, food was pricey. You have my money and my opinion. Be happy for that and take constructive criticism well. Good luck with whats left this business and have a nice evening]. I really cant explain how unwelcoming this establishment was to my husband, friends and me. We decided to visit this place for the first time last night because we heard they have live jazz on Thursdays at 8pm. We arrive 10 mins before so we could have seats. There was a line so we decided to wait to order. No need to stand and wait forever since we sat next to the register. We all were socializing, trying understand the atmosphere. 10-15 mins, the cashier(possibly co owner) interrupts our conversation and asks if we are gonna order something because tables are limited to customers only (there is still a line at the register). "Yes" was all she wanted to hear. What i wanted her to understand is that she can not pressure us to order on her time. Anyone will be indecisive when looking at the menu. So now were force to place an order, in order to somehow enjoy our evening. Overall, food was okay, pretty pricy. Service is terrible (although, the Asian server tried her best). Again, unwelcoming atmosphere. Weird looks and attitude came from the cashier and male barista (again, we sat right next to them). So snobby for a rundown place. Honest opinion.

Wasnt terribly impressed with my first time experience. Cafe Stella states their cafe is European-style, but Ive been to several European countries and had better hot chocolate and coffee at little street stands in Europe. As one reviewer noted, its like a thrift shop in there. And I did notice thats how they styled it, with dog bowls, old, dusty thrift-shop tables, etc. I guess some people like that, but when someone says their place is European-style, I automatically equate that with quality, style, and a certain level of standards; not just with the food, but also with the establishment. So the establishment is very thrift-store quality. The hot coco I ordered was made with chocolate syrup and milk, topped with a homemade marshmallow. It tasted no better than a Nesquik hot chocolate packet with those artificial marshmallows you buy at the store As I mentioned, when I was in Germany one time for the Weinachtsfest, I got hot coco from a street vendor that was better quality than Stellas. They made it with fine coco powder (quality makes all the difference in the world), and topped it with whipped cream. And I also ordered a coffee. Now, I make cappuccinos at home using Nespressos Ristretto brand, and its amazingly good. Stellas cappucchinos couldnt compare. It would be more adequate to label this cafe as one with a Hippie vibe, selling food and drink that is a level above diner quality, but its definitely NOT European-style or quality.

The food is always delicious, the coffee options are strong and accurately tasty, and the beer and wine list is impressive. Signature dishes like the quinoa bowl (warm quinoa topped with fresh fruit and a scoop of peanut butter), shakshuka (baked eggs atop tomatoes and spices), or the avocado toast (avocado, chili, and pistachios) are great options in addition to their classic breakfast and lunch options like scrambles and sandwiches. The seating is ample for a private coffeehouse and they keep finding ways to add seating, so lots of people will bring a laptop and use the wifi. As a first floor business, accessibility is better through the front door because the back entrance has seating that may be challenging to get through with a wide stroller or wheelchair. Outdoor seating has umbrellas and indoor seating is best on jazz night when the live band strikes up for a few hours. Stella, the owner, is always friendly and Ive read bad reviews about her husband, but have yet to experience anything other than him being courteous, friendly, and hard working. Hes always taking in supplies or working the register and moving fast, but the staff is always easy going and friendly. Even when things are busy they move the line quickly, yet never seem rushed. Im not sure who works on the decor, but there are updates and additions of lots of classy touches and showcases of the works of local artisans.

By looking at the Café Stella facebook page they appear to have great looking fresh food. The six of us decided to give the Café a try for lunch at 2:00 pm Sunday. When we arrived the place was very crowded with plenty of young people (my definition of young is early 20s to early 30s)around reading books and working on their computers. Many appeared to have been camped out for quite some time. Some of the tables that can seat at least 8 had 3 people sitting having a cup of coffee. We asked to see if we could get seating for 6 for lunch. We were told it was first come first serve. We ended up going else where for lunch and spending over $100.00. I think Café Stella is a very cool place, just not a convenient place to have a nice lunch. The facebook page led me to believe that Café Stella is a restaurant first that happens to serve coffee. When in fact it is a Coffee place that happens to serve food. We will probably try lunch another time but will have to make sure they have seating before we arrive. Not sure how to rate my experience but I will give it a rating based on serving freshly roasted coffee (you can NOT find that anywhere in the tidewater region) Coffee pricing was very reasonable, and the pictures of food I saw were their actual food and it looked delicious. I am looking forward to going back and having a nice lunch and a cup of coffee.

This is a splendid little cafe in a nice location just off the "main strip," which makes it a little easier to find street parking within a short walking distance; usually just around the corner. The prices are generally fair (may be steep for some), but in my opinion well worth it for the quality of the food and drinks. I have never been disappointed with what Ive had here, and its one of those places youll find yourself exploring the menu to try something different each and every time you come! I highly recommend you try one of their pastries/desserts, especially the gluten free selection! Besides the menu, the staff is friendly and attentive and so are the patrons. Theres a nice little patio out front and the inside of the cafe has a nice eclectic atmosphere. Only downside is the place is hit-or-miss when it comes to finding a seat sometimes. Its a very popular place so there is a handful of times Ive found myself wanting to sit down and stay for a bit, but there just not being a seat available! It really depends on the time of day and day of the week as with anything. In the end still a nice cozy little cafe that I would definitely recommend you try at least once, if not more!
