It was a sprinkle past 10:30 am. My best friend Austin and I had just departed JMU from what may have been our last insane college road trip (as recently employed young adults may have to relive the glory days) to visit our fond friends during their super senior year. We were starving, and Im talking maserati engine roar level tummy growls, and we were surviving the stretch of 66 with no food stops for 100 miles; leftover sprites were the only thing keeping us alive in the car. Then, we made the fool of a lifetime mistake - we accidentally passed up Exit 6. Aside: On the way to JMU, Austin and I were starving (go figure), no exits in sight with food for what must have been 80 miles, but then we saw "Exit 6" with 6 green signs of food! We pulled in and to our hearts content chowed down on some above average level rest stop food, all was good. On our way out of this exit 6 stop, Austin says "I wish its easy to get back on the highway from here", and of course, his wish was granted. I followed that statement by out of the blue saying, "Bro! You just used one of our three roadtrip wishes..." (making this up of course) but we kept that same frame of mind for the rest of the trip. Later on on the trip I also used a poor wish choice, wishing for our m8s apartment to have sprite (and of course, it did). Austin followed by saying "Dude, our second wish!" Later that trip, we had forgotten about the wishes.. until this moment. In an instantaneous second, after we had passed up exit 6, I began the ritual by saying "I wish for the best breakfast food place of all time, to be within the next three exits," as we both bowed our heads in silence. The first exit, nothing. The second exit, a vineyard... it looked hopeless. But then, it seemed to pop up all of a sudden, shrouded in a green brown dust. The only food place on a giant food sign with 5 empty spaces. "We are not stopping at a place called Apple House" we almost both said simultaneously, but the travel wish gods had spoken, we had no choice. Not but .2 miles off this exit lied the breakfast establishment. We pull in. The signs read "hot sauce", "bacon", "doughnuts." As we looked at each other and said "Ok", we entered through the doors to what I can only remember as "Best Day of My Life" by American Authors. I shed a tear. This magical place, something unimaginable that could only be developed by breakfast faries, was the ultimate breakfast road trip experience. Upon my very minute glimpse did I see a roaring fire under a stone pit, perfect coffee and the creamer that one can rarely find at grocery stores, a menu that one looks up at and needs a second not to think but to sob at how perfect it is, and a gift shop 5x the quality of cracker barrel. From here, my story ends - further detail is needed to explain this majestic experience, but it just would not do Apple House justice, if that is even a place, and my breakfast that day was even real.

I highly recommend Apple House for your breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert! The food was excellent, the ambiance was original, the service was welcoming, and the prices were great. They are famous for their pork ribs and sandwiches but I got a fabulous burger. There was enough meat on it for several burgers, the bun was good and toasted and the toppings... Oh my, the toppings. I had candied pickled jalapeños on my burger. Seriously. Yum. There is a kids menu and they are very kid friendly. Its incredibly laid back. Just good food and a relaxed atmosphere. There is even a picnic area if you want to eat outside. After you eat have some fresh apple doughnuts, apple pie, or grab some software serve from their stand. If you are in the mood to shop they have a great store with locally made goods and goodies.

Great place to come in the Fall. This restaurant has some of the best apple donuts, they are very fresh and sweet. The donuts are the main reason why I come to the Apple House because they are a perfect treat during the changing of the seasons. The restaurant is off off of 66 and is a nice place to stop when you are on a road trip. The bbq is very tasty, I love the pulled pork sandwiches here. Typical American food and the people working here are very sweet. The restaurant has a store on the other half of the restaurant and you can find the nicest presents here (old American antiques, local products, and cook books). The restaurant seating is nothing special, this is a laid back place and All American.

Generic, touristy and disgraceful lack of apples. I came here expecting more of an apple orchard feel with fresh cider and donuts. They had a despicable selection of apples spanning one small table, a small basket full of pint bottles of apple cider and mostly unrelated sundries. It was full of a hodge podge array of items like barbecue/hot sauce, Christmas decorations and touristy nick knacks without any sort of cohesive order. It was trying to be like a cracker barrel but failing miserably. I tried the donuts just to justify making the hour+ trip from metro DC and they were mushy, greasy and not very good. I cant speak for the restaurant but it was extraordinarily disappointing.

Was traveling and looking for a good local restaurant for breakfast. This is NOT the place to go. The scrambled eggs were simultaneously scorched brown on the outside and raw on the inside. Totally inedible and yet they were served anyway. As we were leaving, the server who brought this slop to the table said they were recooking the eggs. Well, if youre willing to serve eggs like that once, theres no evidence that the second batch would be edible. The home fries seemed to have been re-dipped in the same old tired grease several times. Go on down I-81 to the Woodstock Cafe. Now, thats a restaurant with some pride in their food.

My family and I stopped in to the Apple House last Saturday just before noon to grab a quick bite. The food was fantastic and the apple donuts were just as good as everyone says they are. Its popularity can cause it to get pretty crowded though we arrived just before a huge line developed. Simply order at the counter, find a table and wait for then to bring your food to you. When you finish you can look through all the items they have for sale, from hot sauce, to shirts, local honey and everything in between. Great place to stop to get a break from 66 or when heading out to skyline drive for the weekend!

Such a fun and yummy place! If you are ever out near Linden, I recommend stopping at the Apple House. We had the jumbo pulled pork BBQ sandwich and it was good, a tad on the sweet BBQ side, but good. My dad ordered the Wildcat and said it was GREAT! Also, you MUST try the apple donuts....YUMMY...sugar and fat....cant go wrong. All in all a fun place to do lunch....you can check out the gift shop. I heard the breakfast is good and I cant wait to go back and give it a try. Sadly (yet its a good thing) Linden is a ways out of D.C., so we wont get out there too often.
