When I travel to Charlottesville Mas Tapas is my go to restaurant. I have never had a bad experience, until this past weekend, December 13, 2013. I know things happen at a restaurant and have over looked small things. But this experience, I had a full size dead bug squished in my apricots. A hostess/waitress just happened to be at our table for another reason and I was stunned and said " well, I dont think this was meant to be in here." Her only remark was "oh my, no." That was the LAST thing I heard from anyone regarding my bug. I told the young lady that I did not want another dish. Please do not replace it and I will not be paying for it. She just shook her head in agreement. Well, they didnt listen to me and brought out another dish and I refused it. I continued on with my meal, and as usual, the shrimp was delicious. But the fact that a manager did NOT come over and apologize and offer me or my company any sort of compensation is appalling. A FULL SIZE BUG cooked in my food. I still shake my head in disbelief. Im not one to make a scene in public places like that, because I did finished eating my shrimp, but a fine establishment like Mas Tapas should have been more on their game with professionalism and customer service. Sorry Mas...you only get two star from me.

I cannot fathom why this place is rated so highly. The service was slow, not overly friendly, nor helpful with the menu. The dishes, although decent portions which is sometimes hard to come by at tapas restaurants, left so much to be wished for! Why all the crazy quirky food? They took amazing ingredients and just did too much to them, leaving each dish worse off. Plus, almost every dish was accompanied by a huge glob of aioli--which while sometimes a nice compliment to a meal, completely took over each dish and ruined it. A wonderful piece of carne asada does not need to be equal parts beef and flavored mayo. The shrimp dish was so salty it was almost inedible, and also came with a huge glob of aioli, when something to cut through the oil used for frying would have been much preferable. The chard was drenched in a sherry wine and cheese, which masks the flavor of the vegetable. The mushroom dish was probably the worst of all. The artichoke/goat cheese spread with a nice baked loaf of bread was the only thing that saved the meal. We ordered 7 dishes, and none of them were winners. When someone in the kitchen is taking great, often local ingredients, and turning out crap food, I stop believing all the 5 star reviews.

Ive been to MAS around 10 times and the food is great. For some reason, the service has always been questionable. I find, when making a request, many of the servers there act like they are doing me a favor rather than being a server and getting paid to serve. Last night specifically, the kitchen totally forgot about our shrimp tapas and then we mentioned to our server. She went to check on it and 10-15 minutes later (after it was already 20 minutes late), she brought us partially slimy, uncooked shrimp. I took one bite and was disgusted. I mentioned it to our server and she said "Ill see what I can do, maybe they can put it back on the grill for you." She acted like we were incorrect and inconveniencing her to do her job. No apology and they have never offered to remove anything from a bill. Because of this server, who is a veteran and weve had her before, I will not be going back to MAS.

No más por favor! It is rare to me to find an experience where I dislike everything I ordered! The shrimp was not de-viened which give you that gritty unpleasant taste. Pulled pork dry, flavorless, and my stomach still turns at the thought of that duck/fig epanada! The server could careless to our experience, and the manager was worse. He asked me if I have been to a tapas restaurant before!!!! He told me that my sense of taste for food is unsophisticated. Believe me insulting customers is not a way to have people go back. Does Charlottesville understand customer service? I agree with Chris, this restaurant would never survive in a big city and CHARLOTTESVILLE NEEDS BETTER FOOD!!!! FOR SHAME!

We frequent Mas on many occasions and always enjoy the food , but almost every time leave feeling like why did we visit there again. The wait staff is by far the rudest and most entitled we have ever encountered. Never again!!! The options for great food and GREAT SERVICE are far to many in Charlottesville including right down the street at Tavola to ever spend your hard earned money at this place. The wait staff should realize they are in the people business and the owner would be wise to get this fixed because the floodgates of people will not put up with this type of service long before the word on the street gives you plenty of time to ponder where did they all go!

"No Mas". While Mas is well located and decorated, its food is just plain bad. We ordered shrimp that left an earthy, mushroom-like flavor in your mouth (possibly turned), sinewy beef tenderloin that was tough as cheap flank steak, chorizo that was likely made elsewhere and simply warmed, $4 bread served without butter or other spread, and unremarkable tomatoes with an odd smoky flavor. Simple ingredients were dredged in grease/oil and lacked flavor. The fact that this place exists today is likely attributable to a lack of competition and low standards. It would not survive in a big city. Charlottesville needs better food!

One of our favorite places on the earth! Excellent food, sexy date night ambience, and the drinks are fab: sangria, stellar wine list, on point beer selection, and OMG the fresh cocktails! Most of all, the staff is smart and savvy. Indoor and outdoor dining are available, plan to wait if you arrive at prime dinner time on a Fri/Sat. We love to go on a weeknight at 6pm to get a seat at the bar near the chefs to watch the show. MAS has been a key ingredient to the Cville dining scene for 14 years .... there is a reason. Find a parking place in the neighborhood and enjoy! (Bacon wrapped dates? Yes! Vegan options? Yes!)

Good food, only reason its not 5 stars was because it was a hot day and the inside was packed and outside was empty, so decided to sit outside because only one table was being used. However the hostess told us werent aloud to sit at a table with an umbrella due to that half of the patio being closed. Seemed odd and assumed a large party had reserved it however over the next hour of us sitting there every table after us was allowed to pick where they wanted to sit and all choose the shade, so it was annoying to sit in the sun on a hot as hell day for no apparent reason

Mas has great food. I have traveled to Spain and I would rate their food better. The only negative is service is something to be desired. And groups are not well handled because the food comes out in random order. The food is classic spanish tapas but they do it better. The quality if excellent but like I said service is okay and waits tend to be long with no reservations taken. For example the last visit we had they spilled wine on my wife. The good thing the waiter came around about 15 minutes later said sorry. Comped a drink and dessert.
