SURPRISINGLY AMAZING! i really didnt have any expectations...Id never heard of this place and some friends came in from out of town with their kids and we were looking for someplace relatively kid friendly to feed everyone when this place was suggested by another local friend. Walking into the place I felt like I stepped into 1976...down to the "Cash Only" signs on the register and the crushed velvet decor. That was the entry way... The dining room was very busy with the fake gaslight lanterns and old wood...huge dining room though and easily accommodated our party of 8. Prior to arriving we had learned that this diner only accepted cash and so my husband and I had to go through our pockets to see if we actually had any without having to stop at an ATM (they actually have an ATM in the lobby) and hoped that $50 would cover us...no worries...their prices are super reasonable. He ordered a burger and I ordered the chicken fried steak. My meal came with salad, soup, bread and dessert...in effect the food just kept coming and coming...and was pretty good fare. It reminded me of the kind of place that old men go eat every single day so they dont have to cook since their wives have been gone for some time...not gourmet or fancy...just good food. The dining room was full on Saturday night and the food took a while to come out but our waitress was very attentive and our drinks never sat empty and neither did the bread basket with the hot rolls. Dessert was spumoni ice cream that was just the right amount after a pretty large dinner... The best part? When the bill came...believe it or not. I had a large bowl of soup, a salad, hot rolls from the kitchen, chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn...my husband had a burger and fries...endless Sierra Mist and iced tea...ice cream afterward...and our bill was $19. Really... Our friends with their two kids ate for $36. I spend more than that at most drive-up windows... Im really happy that this place was suggested and it will definitely become a regular stop.

I went here over the weekend and I must say I was sorely disappointed. I was very hungry but after my wife and I were seated, We sat there for at least 30 minutes without a word from anyone in the entire establishment. It was offensive especially when six of them were sitting and having lunch (eating) on the table next to us, ( They were all dressed in their uniform ) And were happily chatting away about their life . A few servers kept coming around to contribute to their conversation and then walked away. While we sat and sat and waited for something to drink and just yearning to be acknowledged. Two servers were talking right next to our table and yet again not a word. I was hungry , thirsty and it was beginning to annoy me!! I turned around and rudely said Hello!! can we get some service here?? finally the two servers who were standing next to our table ran and got some help , Then we get to order and got our food after waiting for another 30 minutes. Well Ive been going to this place off and on for years, I have liked the food for the most part, Ive taken people here for the first time who ended up liking the food. I wouldve just left except I didnt want to start from scratch and sit around again and waited for food after I get there, And I was hungry. The food was good and for the most part I usually like the food when I go here. But this was the second time my wait have been this long and been treated rudely. So I must rethink going back again. Someone at this establishment (management) should really give this employees more training on people skills.

CASH ONLY ESTABLISHMENT, Restaurant Owned ATM CHARGES $2.15 for Withdrawal. Yup, like the sign says, I was pleasantly surprised to find out they dont take credit cards or debit cards after I ate. The food was good, but the inability of this establishment to properly clothe its employees and operating in this century by accepting normal forms of tender, leaves me to believe there are more deserving establishments that dont stick an ATM THEY OWN in the lobby to make those who didnt see the broken sign on the podium of the register about not accepting credit cards. Owning your own ATM and then making people use it to pay for the food is cheating. I ordered the Coachmans Special and my partner ordered the Sirloin and Egg breakfast. The Coachman Special is a pastrami burger which was dripping as I ate it, which made the bun soggy. It was still good, kinda like eating a roast beef sandwich with au jus in the burger. The fries were run of the mill. My partners breakfast meal was good, but the advertised sirloin was really just a ground beef patty. It still tasted good, but not what he expected. The pancakes were good, well actually, they were very good. I give this restaurant 1 star, because a great meal was tainted by my embarrassment to ask my partner to pay for a meal because I dont carry cash and dont believe in being raped by an ATM machine.

They should just rename this place to the "Pirate Store" because the interior looks like a pirate ship with diner tables. Onto the food though: the food, like the decor, is awesome. My favorite thing on the menu is the Swedish pancakes. It comes with lingonberries mixed with butter (I wish it were separate, but its still good). The pancakes are made to perfection every time, never burnt or undercooked. Theyre slightly thicker than crepes, and the batter tastes slightly sweet. Ive also had several of their other menu items, such as the spaghetti dinner. Portions are huge, it comes with a cesar salad and two pieces of garlic bread. Its a typical diner menu, but most of the food is a notch or two above what youd expect at a diner. On an interesting note, the owner of the place was involved in a cocain smuggling ring, which was my guess as to why the place only accepts cash, but theres an ATM in the lobby and the restaurant has nothing to do with the owner, thankfully. The food is still great, and the servers are all oddly hot, and its just a nice place to go to for an honest meal.

My boyfriend and I have this thing where we randomly pick a restaurant around state street and eat there. Well we just so happened to be driving by Coachmans and decided to do a U-Turn and try it out. It has a very outdated feel to it. But not at all in a bad way! All the decor is inspired around the age of carriages and coaches. We also felt it was compelling because it totally looks like a place that you see on the haunted tv shows. The food was very good! Their pancakes are great, and their scalloped potatoes are delish! I tried their famous bread pudding, it wasnt to my liking but my boyfriend put it down. Both times our waitresses were nice, neither extraordinary or extremely rude. Beware though, the only except cash! Someone below said that they are living in the dark ages, but from a business stand point i think its very smart! NO credit card hassles, No bounced checks. It is absolutely understandable. And for all of those considering trying this place out they do have an ATM. Plus the ATM only charges you a buck. Not bad at all! Thanks Coachmans!
