I love cafe rio, so i couldnt give it 1 star, but this is easily the worst location Ive yet eaten at. I come here about once a week because its one of the only food options within a TRAX ride of the U of U thats not greasy fast food. Four times now, the rice has been slightly undercooked and hard to chew. Twice, the shredded chicken has been overcooked and stringy. At lunchtime, theres often an annoying guy portioning out the meat and beans who has a running gag of pretending to misunderstand your order by declaring "Black beans!" when you requested pinto beans and then smilingly saying "Just kidding!" when you begin to protest. Its cute the first time, maybe, but i dont like to be trolled when Im paying 10 dollars for a pile of rice, beans, and chicken. And then today, i walk in to an empty queue at 4:30 pm and still end up waiting 15 minutes to get my food because their focus was on filling a large, complicated online order for a customer who hadnt yet arrived instead of serving the customers standing directly in front of them. Two employees frantically creating a dozen meals while half a dozen others stand around in the back of the kitchen chatting --- theres something very messed up with the management here. All that said, this is still Cafe Rio and its still delicious 75% of the time. If youre able to go to another location, i recommend it, but if not, its worth coming here and hoping to catch them on one of their good days.

I have been to most of the cafe rio locations in UT, and had great experiences at every one, including this one when certain employees are not working. This location is closest to my house so I go here often. Ive had mixed experiences at this location, but last night put me over the edge. One employee in particular always gives me significantly less food than Ive ever received at any other cafe rio. This is no minor difference in serving size, Im talking about literally half, or even 1/3 the amount of meat, sauce, cheese, beans and rice that Im used to receiving at EVERY OTHER Cafe rio, and even at this one from every other employee. This particular employee has always been skimpy, but last night it was so much so that I was still hungry after I finished eating - something Ive never experienced at cafe rio. Im talking about the equivalent of ordering a foot-long sandwich at subway and receiving a 6-inch. A completely dissatisfying experience. The amount of food I received for the money I paid could be used in the dictionary as the definition of CHEAP-ASSERY. The downtown location needs to train their employees (one in particular) on the correct amount of food that should go in each meal!! CAFE RIO, I DONT WANT TO GIVE UP ON YOU. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!

My wife and I love the food at Cafe Rio, and have been to this location many times before as it is close to work. We also frequent the one at 6985 South Park Centre Drive, which is closer to home. Today I placed an online order at 10:42am for pickup at 11:30am. We arrived at the restaurant around 11:35 only to be told our food was not yet ready, and this after we had paid for the meal at the location. We waited and waited...we asked about getting a refund so we could go somewhere else for lunch or if the manager could give us a free meal, but we didnt get anywhere with the server. We finally got our food, two salads, around 11:50am. The food was good, though we discovered it had just been made. Neither salad had the cheese that Cafe Rio normally has melted onto the tortilla. I will probably return in the future to this location, though I may no longer rely on the online ordering system to guarantee that I get an accurate order. It seems to me that there are not enough workers for the online/phone pick-up orders for a location that is so busy at lunch during the work week. I would just go in to the restaurant and go through the line, but there is so little parking for this location, which was why I started ordering online in the first place,

Absolute worst customer service experience... Im still having a hard time understand how people can act this way at their job... a lady named Shannon De La Rosa was my cashier. I asked her for a tres leches cake with strawberries and whip cream. She gave me the cake with the strawberries still whole and with the stems and leaf. I asked if they dont usually come chopped, and her responce was "fine ill just take this one home and make you another one". I told her it was ok, i didnt have time to wait. She said again that she was going to grab a new one anyways because she wanted the previous one for herself and walked away shaking her hand dismissively while i was again asking her please not to because i didnt have time. She took forever in the back talking to coworkers and then came back with a second cake, strawberries again whole with the stem. I at that point didnt want the cake anymore, but was upset at her extremely rude attitude and the way she ignored me. When i asked for a manager she said "he loves me, he wont do anything to me"... i asked for the district managers name to which she responded "Chris. And he loves me too. No one will do anything to me" while laughing....

I picked up a to go order here to eat at the hospital with my wife as we switch off staying overnight with our son in his recovery room. They messed up my shrimp tacos twice trying to give me chicken tacos. My wifes meal was a chicken salad that they put together correctly but failed to put the dressing in the to go bag. I got to the hospital and unpacked our dinner and didnt find any dressing. You cant eat a salad without dressing so I had to drive all the way back to get the dressing. When I get there they say they cant just give me the dressing because they are "famous" for their dressing and they get people coming in all the time trying to swindle them out of a quarter of a cup of dressing. The manager was the one that was packing my to go bag, and she also tried giving me the chicken tacos that belonged to the lady behind me in line. So instead of just giving me the dressing they charge me $1.05 for the dressing that I already paid for. This location is the poorest Cafe Rio on the Wasatch Front. Food was good, customer service not so much.

This is the second BAD experience Ive had at this particular location. I did a pick up order ONLINE. I signed up, did the whole thing. After I ordered my food, the wait was going to be an hour and a half. That was a long wait, but I figured that was okay. I finally go to pick up the 2 salads that I had PRE-ORDERED and the guy at the pick up counter asked my name. I told him, he said he didnt have an order for me. I said I placed it online, he asked for a phone number so I gave him the one I had put in when I signed up. He said there was nothing, I said Ive waited an hour and a half to pick it up. I would have thought he would offer to have our order made right then, since I had already waited so long. He didnt even say anything about that. After he didnt offer to have our salads made (I would have PAID for them at this point) I just walked out. I was ANGRY. I dont need anything free, but you just let a customer LEAVE who told you they had been waiting for an hour and half??? That is the most ridiculous BS Ive ever heard!!
