Smokin Joes of Texas turns out to be a decent BBQ place. Its better than a good number of places, but nothing spectacular, and not really much better than Rudys, to be honest. First, the brisket was too dry in most bites (a phenomenon common in SA), the bark was not crispy, and the meat lacked smokey flavor (no smoke ring at all). However, some bites, especially with bark and with fat, were quite tasty. Ive tasted much worse in SA. Second, the pork ribs were dry. In fact, one bite was so dry, I literally could not bite through it (and no, it wasnt a bone, but the rib meat on the edge of the bone). The spice rub on the rib was a bit unique and interesting with a nice touch of heat. Still, the bark was rubbery, and the rib overall was something I would not care to experience again. Third, the sausage was the star of this show. It was juicy and full of flavor albeit a bit cool in temperature. I would say its among some of the better sausage Ive tasted in San Antonio. Fourth, the BBQ sauce was way too watery and sweet. After the first taste I firmly planted the bottle on the side of the table. In short, Smokin Joes of Texas is a slightly-above run-of-the-mill San Antonio BBQ restaurant. I personally dont see a reason to return. Instead, if Im not feeling like trying a new place, Ill be heading to either Harmons, or in a pinch, Auggies. The best BBQ by far is still of course Franklins in Austin.

A nearly hidden gem between Car King Used Cars and El Sabrosito Mexican Restaurant, Smokin Joe’s is definitely worth taking the time to find. We bought a Large Family Meal with an additional half-pound of sausage and 4 cakes to go. Not only were there no failures at Smokin Joe’s, everything exceeded my family’s expectations. The Meat: Brisket was moist and flavorful. The sausage juicy without being greasy The ribs were literally the best I’ve had in San Antonio, tender and meaty. The Sides: The potato salad was perfectly composed with just the right amount of mustard tang and perfect texture. The coleslaw had great vinegar flavor and was neither soupy nor dry. We were happy we tried the salad, fresh lettuce, generous with the walnuts and dried cranberries. Since we had to drive it home we really appreciated that the fresh house ranch dressing was kept in a separate container. The Desserts: All are moist and delicious. The Black Russian cake doesn’t have frosting, and DOES NOT NEED IT. Rich flavor and dense (but not heavy) texture. Taste is similar to a Guinness Stout cake Lemon Cake is the lightest dessert option and has great lemon flavor. The Red Velvet is the sweetest of the cakes, but still not overly sweet.

How this place has been right by my house for so long and that Ive driven past so many times without me knowing is downright embarrassing now that I know how stellar the food is! I took two bites and decided Id found my ride or die BBQ place. Its SO good and the guys that work here are super nice too. The menu and (really good) prices are all clearly written on a big board on the wall and they have specials and desserts listed on another board behind the counter. The brisket is mouthwatering, ridiculously tender and juicy, and has the perfect crust on it. The sausage is fabulous as well, the casing isnt overly firm and has a great "crunch" as you bite but gives easily under teeth and isnt chewy. Like the brisket, its super juicy and flavorful. And the sauce! Im not a person that really enjoys BBQ sauce (heresy, I know) and often just eat my brisket and such bare as I find most just drowns out the flavor of the meat or is overly sweet or smokey, but whatever theyve got going in theirs is magical. Its got a little heat, just a touch of sweetness , and its very savory and it compliments the meats so well. Seriously, everyone needs to eat here at least once. I cant wait to go back and try the other stuff on the menu.

Disappointed because it gets great reviews. Lets start with the Brisket or should I say roast beef...lack of flavor was not moist at all, hell, i could make better and thats not saying much. The ribs also lack the smoke flavor you would associate with ribs from a BBQ joint. The sausage was the best item I received today but was not a fan. The BBQ sauce was apple cider vinegar with some tomatoe sauce. I try to be fair in my reviews so here is my attempt the owner is a real nice gentleman and the cashier was a sweet lady. WILL NOT BE BACK

Im sorry to say this but I really didnt enjoy my meal. Ive had a lot of really good bbq in my life and this wasnt one of them. I had the brisket which reminded me more like prime rib. It was half fat and was completely devoid of smoky flavor. The bbq sauce (which was raved about) was thin and disappointing. And last but not least if your going to charge someone for a 2 meat plate, actually put a second meat...on the plate.

Good food and good customer service. The brisket was delicious and the potato salad was delicious. The beans were great and added a good flavor. I ordered ribs with my plate and while they were good. They did need a little bit of work. They werent bad, but they werent on the same level as the brisket. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends. Ill be going back for sure.

Smokin Joes is by far the best BBQ in the area. You cant go wrong with anything you order. Their brisket is delicious, and they have a GREAT bbq sauce. The chicken is phenomenal and usually sells out quickly. Try the loaded potato when they have it. Its topped with pulled pork, cheese, and deliciousness. Everyone is very friendly and I always feel welcome when I come in.

I go here for lunch every once in a while. The smoked meats are great--you cant go wrong. Here are my favorite things: * Baked potatoes on Thursday! Loaded with meat, sour cream, etc. * Joes Burger. Its got jalapeño ground into the beef. * Super Sandwich. Plan on getting messy. Its like the baked potato, but in a bun instead. * Christmas Ham. Plan ahead!

I dont know what the heck all these other people are talking about on here but I was disappointed. My only word to describe this place is sad. My brisket was as dry as West Texas and my pulled pork was as cold as my ex wifes heart. The macaroni salad was quite bland and the potato salad wasnt much better. This was a sad day for Texas BBQ.

This place is great! I got the brisket, BBQ beans, and the macaroni salad. The brisket was outstanding. So juicy and tender. They give you homemade BBQ sauce, but the brisket was so good, I ate it without any sauce. The BBQ beans and macaroni salad were good too, but the brisket put my tastebuds in a state of euphoric bliss.

Their black Russian cake... is not to die for, it is to live for. It is like God took a piece of cloud and said, "Let me make this taste like chocolate and give the recipe to these wonderful people." Their meat is by far the best in the area and the only restaurant near us that sells pulled pork. Definitely beats out Rudys.
