A co-worker asked me last week if I had ever heard of the Rib House. Ever heard of it? I love the Rib House, I just hadnt been there in quite some time, even though my wife taunts me with tales of good eats every time her and her mom stop by for some of their famous ribs. The idea was in my head and by Friday, it was a done deal, we had to get over to the Rib House so I could get some of their catfish. I know that sounds odd, but having never tried the catfish before, I had this big plan to get some! This restaurant is located just north of what is now Port San Antonio, formerly Kelly AFB, on Old Highway 90. The address is 757 Old Hiway 90 just west of 36th Street. If you cant see or feel a big C-5 flying over head, you arent there. So we get there right at opening and commence to inspect the menu. I have to confess, I had this sudden unsettling idea that if I had the catfish, I was missing the entire point of going to the Rib House. I mean, they dont call it the Catfish House, right? And this is why I have problems at restaurants. Too many options is a recipe for disaster. There were three of us in our group and after serving us our tea, it was time to actually place the food orders. I opted to go last hoping that in the remaining few seconds, I could make my mind focus on the benefits of catfish over ribs. The first guy ordered the two meat lunch - beef ribs and pork ribs and for sides, yams and fried okra. The second guy went with the brisket (which I have had many times before - delicious) and green beans and Cole slaw. It was suddenly go time for me. I had the sides down for sure. I was going with the green beans and potato salad. As soon as I was about to say catfish, my mind made some sort of left turn at Albuquerque and my mouth announced, "two meats, beef and pork", all on its own. As the guy left, I almost felt like I was having an out of body experience because I really had catfish on my mind. Really. But I was not disappointed at all. First, I am a huge fan of Bill Millers green beans. I love them and would eat them daily. The green beans at the Rib House do not have the same pica-factor (they arent spicy hot), but they have a great home made flavor that I truly enjoy. Order them and you will agree. The potato salad is good - I wouldnt turn it away and I surely licked my plate clean. The ribs are simply to die for and I dont mean maybe. I like the beef and the pork. One of our group said that he liked the beef a little more than the pork but followed that with, "It was like the difference between an A and an A+". Hard to go wrong with that. No offense to the fine people at Tony Romas (I havent been in years), but the Rib House puts them to shame. Shame, as in give me back the hundreds and hundreds of dollars I spent there over the years thinking I was eating "The Best". Now, before you gather up the entire family reunion or want to take your seventy nearest neighbors over for a little feast, you have to understand that there are some limitations. First, there is no parking to speak of. Second, the restaurant itself is not very big. I dont know how many they can hold, but it cant be more than 30 at a time. Having said that though, you can get it to go. But if you have a small group of 4 to 10, Id say they would be able to hook you up, just get there early. So as soon as I got back to work, I whined over and over to my friends that I should have gotten the catfish. Im guessing there is going to be another trip in the near future. Bottom line: Tasty Treats. If you even think you like ribs and you dont try this place, you are missing out.

have visited almost evey BBQ joint in Texas...I traveled to Memphis and the Carolinas just to eat BBQ, no lie. So if you want to have a chat with me, Ill be every Tuesday and Thursday @ 11:15 eating at the BEST BBQ ever, right here in San Antonio. The Rib House is overall just that, the best BBQ joint ever. First, its the atmosphere...after visiting a few times, its just like coming home in the afternoons. But then, theres the food. Fried Chicken (southern style), Meatload (a whole lot of it), Catfish (golden and thick), Pork Chops (very lightly breaded and wonderfully seasoned), Sausage (better than anywhere else), and finally the ABSOLUTELY BEST brisket you will eat anywhere...did I say anywhere? Oh, oh, and the sides....crazy! Green beans, cabbage, scallop potatoes, sweet potato fries...you name it...off the hook! Im telling you, The Rib House is so good that I had to come online and say something. You have to try it...put it on your Bucket List or something. But dont wait too late cause you wont forgive yourself for not coming sooner. Sparticus out!

While visiting my daughter after her graduation from Air Force Boot Camp airman training. We were looking forward towards some down home Texas bbq unfortunately we didnt find one here in Texas. Our waiter was also the cashier who didnt get pass grade school, reason being I ordered the Catfish meal for 33 something dollars, two slabs of beef ribs 8 something per pound and corn nuggets 1.35 pint w/ 4 sweet teas 1.50 each. My overall bill came up to a 107.00 w/ no recipe and while hes on the register looking confused not telling me exactly what I was being charged for SMH! I just shook my head and paid no comment about the taste of the food since it is a small business privately owned. But definitely not recommended, 1 star because the catfish was good thats all.

Very good food. My first time here, and wont be my last! Best thing I love about this place, was the SWAMP WATER. Its sweet tea / lemonade. Very refreshing and best thing I had next to my Crown Royal with 7up. The fried Okra was delicious. Ribs were very good, and meat just came off the bone. And the Brisket was so juicy. Way better then any other joint I been too. Fries were simple but golden and crispy. Just how I love them. On top of every thing. The people here were friendly and felt like I was with a family gathering. Ill be back.

Some of the best BBQ in town. I will travel across town to get this BBQ and the prices are very reasonable. The brisket is tender and delicious. The home-made desserts are awesome (with freshly made banana pudding on Fridays). I highly recommend this great little mom and pop establishment (in addition to getting there early to beat the lunch crowds - considering there are only about 6 or 7 tables).

I was soooo hoping this would be a great experience. I love supporting small businesses, but the pork ribs and brisket were not good. The collard/mustard greens were good and the personnel were great. The BBQ sauce was on the meat by default. I personally prefer on the side so I can taste the meat and season as desired. The meat did not have a smoke taste, more like it was cooked in an oven.
