Bud Jones has been around since 1958. So have I, and although I dont eat there often I have been going there for quite a few years. No one will ever mistake Buds for fine dining, but it has always been a consistently good choice for basic fare. I brought my mother along, and heres the scoop from todays visit. Service - 5 Stars We arrived at 5:00 PM, so just ahead of the evening crowd which started to file in shortly after. We were promptly seated, and the waitress appeared after just a few seconds to take our drink order, which she then brought out after only a couple of minutes. We opted for an order of Super Nachos as an appetizer, and I ordered "The Largest Enchiladas in Town" while my mother selected the Country Fried Steak. The nachos came out quickly. Once we finished them the empty plates were immediately cleared away and our main orders arrived just moments after. The waitress was friendly, polite and attentive. Food - 4 Stars The Super Nachos were tasty. Perhaps just a little on the soggy side, but not overly so. The Jalapenos were a bit too mild for my taste. Could have used a little more kick The Enchiladas were very good, and the portion size lived up to its name. Not sure if they are actually the largest in town, but they were enough to fill me up. The rice and beans were average. My only complaint would be the tortillas. Hard and dry. Mom reports the CFC was good, but nothing outstanding. She liked the cole slaw, the fries were OK but a bit soggy. Total cost $36.79 +tip for a large appetizer, 2 main courses and 2 drinks. Maybe Im out of touch, but seems just a bit high for Bud Jones fare. $$ Ambiance/Decor - 3 stars What can I say, its Bud Jones. The building is old, its been through a fire and a few remodels. Its clean and functional, and someone actually played Pink Floyds "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" on the jukebox. That and a plate of enchiladas were enough ambiance for me. Tilll next year sometime.

Being a first time, hearing all the good things about Bud Jones and then you experience this for your self not good! It does not matter what time of day people visit this establishment it should be the same all around. We walk in there a hand written sign on the podium" Seat yourself" No one is there to greet you business looks slow, one of the first thing you see is some seat are ripped cotton showing covered with old duct tape. Waitress came over after she finishing using her smartphone (no name tags) and then she said "Hi, what can I get you to drink". She looked serious did not smile the whole time until we left. I asked what where the two side choices and waitress said there on the menu, I replied well, I do not have my reading glass, then she told me. That just seemed rude. Food was here within 10 minutes great but afterwards did not feel well. I was the only one that ordered the chicken fried steak. It look cooked but my stomach did not agree about 30 min later I paid the price...34.83 family of 5 to get sick. :( Busy or not make sure food is cooked well. Leaving we paid for our Anniversary dinner (14yrs) I asked the cashier hows your day and she said "Im here" expression of hate on her face, then I said you should smile and make your day better. Read between my lines I will not take my family back to this mediocre restaurant, if you do go to eat plain food make sure its cooked.

I ordered the fried pickle burger ok the fries were old cold even the waitress seen how bad the fries looked apologized for food she brought fresh fries out. my wife ordered the chicken fajita special looked decent but all the tortillas even the ones for the 2 enchilada plates were old cracked not good at all and of course the waitress apologized for the food we eat at this restaurant maybe 3 times a month we love this restaurant and the food I will admit this is the first time we had dinner here maybe it was the dinner staff I dont really know all we know is that if im going to spend 50.00 dollars for some food I expect wonderful food and service and thats at any restaurant. thank you, leoard talamantez hopefully someone from bud jones will respond to my review and all the other bad review and fix the many problems at this restaurant.

Where should I begin.. The building looks like it should be condemned.. When you walk in youre assaulted by the overwhelming smell of raw fish..its dirty and run down.. Ive been in places where it doesnt look great but the food is awesome and this place has been there for 55 years so we thought wed give it a try.. Wrong..there must have been a time when it was good but not anymore.. I got the turkey and stuffing dinner.. The stuffing was like wet sand..the potatoes were instant and the gravy was canned..my daughter got a cheeseburger and fries.. Her burger was so thin and overcooked she couldnt chew it..my son had the grilled cheese and fries..some of his fries were raw and some burnt..Im not even sure how thats possible.. My husband had the chicken fried steak and onion rings..the rings were cold and tasteless..the staff was nice enough but the food was literally inedible..Im not sure how anyone who has reviewed this place recently gave it a good review.. The bathroom was horrific.. Tiles broken.. Floor was sticky and to top it off there were roaches in the light fixtures on the ceiling.. The few bites of turkey I ate made me sick..do yourself a favor and dont bother.. Im not sure how they pass with the health department

Bud Jones is a San Antonio Family Tradition for many of the locals, especially if you are from the Southside. There is nothing hipster about the humble decor. In fact, think of it more like visiting Grandmas house. The place is clean and always has San Antonians dining there. Bud Jones boasts a variety of down home cooking. Usually, when there is such a variety, some items on a menu lack in quality; not so at Bud Jones. They are consistent with all items on the menu. If you are in the mood for Fish or Shrimp, I highly suggest you either get the Fish Plate or the Rockport Shrimp. If you get the combo plate the shrimp is smaller than the succulent Rockport shrimp. Taste is not compromised, just size and well, it matters. Tex-Mex food? Yes please. You will not be disappointed with the generous portions of nachos or enchiladas covered in melted American Cheese. The chicken fried steak, veal cutlet, pot roast and meatloaf...all delicious. If you usually order Ranch with your salad, STOP. Their 1000 Island is so much better. Wash it all down with their Texas Sweet Tea.....oh yes. Dont forget to save room for their Carrot Cake...it is truly the best Ive ever tasted.
