Firstly, this is not directed to any staff member in particular @ the Velvet Melvin more toward the upper most management of the bar/company. In the past I have noticed that the computer clocks @ the Melvin run exactly 10 minutes faster than real time....CHECK YOUR PHONES AT 2am, your phones will say 1:50am. This will be about the time the staff will tell you that you have 10 minutes to finish your beverage and leave...no worries, I think, finish and go... in the industry, its all good,..right? Up until 03/21/09. We work down the road and friday night (03/20) we are gunning to get the hell out & catch last call, the bartender and I review our options and both agree in unison,.."The Velvet Melvin!!" So, its out with the lights, car parked outside the door, restaraunt door is not even locked and I already have the car running and passenger door open for my colleague and off to the Melvin....I wont even tell you how fast I was driving down Richmond...... We arrive out the doors and B-Line straight to the Bar, one person cleaning glasses no more than 5 feet from us, says nothing, other bartender shows up, all this in a time frame of maybe 30 seconds, she greets us and we order... and this was the response......."its 2:00am (computer clock reflects this) we are closed." My response as I looked at my cell phone(Sprint carrier and friend was AT&T) showing her the time on my phone and I say,..."Its 1:50am!" Her response was, hands in the air, a shoulder shrug and a glance at the one cleaning glasses for which nothing was said. My colleague was already heading out the door saying bye...Its about 1:52am now...less time to reach last call...we regroup and agree we must get somewhere where the pub knows us and they wont pull that stunt,..again in unison we say..."Absynthe!!" In the car, my colleague and I both agree that the Velvet Melvin LOSES THOUSANDS A YEAR from what just happened. So, off we go, richmond to kirby to 59north and I am at 80mph as i hit the road,..Radar detector dont fail me now!!!!!! Tires squeeling to make the light from the richmond exit,..1:55am... and we fly into the Absynthe parking lot,...inside we make it and order drinks,..Double Jack and coke,..Gin and Tonic,...and two shots of Jagermeister. We made it and were excited after sorting out last call under pressure. Now your thinking,..so whats the point......... The point I am making to the upper management at The Velvet Melvin is simply this... At Absynthe are total bill was plus/minus $40.00 bucks. Plus, $10.00 buck tip to the bartender. To the bottom line of Absynthe, not The Velvet Melvin. I remembered this when I awoke and did the numbers on what that would cost The Velvet Melvin over the course of 1 year, and what tips were lost to an employee of The Velvet Melvin. Based on $40 dollars and a $10 dollar tip @ 7 days a week. Revenue loss: $40 x 7 days = $280.00 loss a week $280 x 4 weeks = $1120.00 loss a month $1120 x 12 months = $13,440.00 loss a year ...... to the bottom line of The Velvet Melvin Tip loss: $10 x 7 days = $70.00 loss a week $70 x 4 weeks = $280.00 loss a month $280 x 12 months = $3360.00 loss a year in tips..... which in my opinion is alot of money to lose as a tipped employee In closing to the upper management of The Velvet Melvin; "Is knowingly keeping your computer clocks 10 minutes faster than real time worth it,.. when it negatively impacts your bottom line?" Only time will tell........................................

One of the divey-ist bar in Houston as when you first walk in, you get this dark, somewhat cold feeling that you get where you may feel like "Do I really want to stay here?" The answer is yes as I had some of the greatest time here on various nights with some of my best friends. The bartenders recognize me and my good friend as they know what kind of shots we like or the beer we want. The food here isnt too bad either as I have tried the pizza and their steak on their steak night. The pizza is definitely above average but dont expect something like a true pizza place quality as this place is, after all, a bar first. As for the steak on steak night, the size of the steak is great but my complaint is that the green beans is too salty and the potato is a bit dry. One of the great thing about this place is that they do have fish tank drinks. Do you feel like getting wasted? then get yourself a fish tank thats full of tropical fruity alcohol flavor. They also have a good selection of beer on tap or bottled beer. The price is fair for mixed drinks or shots. They also have 2 pool tables and 2 dart boards. Like most of the modern bars, theres also that Internet jukebox and big screen TV on the end of the bar. Theres also a big front patio for people who wants to drink outside or have a cigarette. I know dive bars isnt everyones type of bar but I would consider this place as one of my favorite watering hole.

Parking isnt great. Prices are average. Interior is very dark and place is small. (Capacity is 99 people). Popular for all ages. Pool tables. Known for their pizza. You have to order your food at the bar. No one came to our table.

Despite the complaints of certain high maintenance types, this is a pretty outstanding dive bar. Purple walls, room for Darts and pool tables. Just order a lonestar and bask in the glory of the Melvin.
