Back in the day, and we are talking pre-smartphones, pre-selfies, pre-twitter, when the internet was new and people belonged to newsgroups, I used to love to drive around Houston solo and try new places, hoping to find that diamond in the coalmine and champion it to my friends. But with all the avenues for food writing these days, there really arent any well kept secrets any more. Saigon Cafe might just be one of these, though. It is very close to the more famous Thien An (an excellent restaurant). Cafe Saigon looks like a dive from the outside, but the interior is clean, the restrooms are clean, and it is very presentable. I was very impressed by the Pho and Hu Tieu soups here. The menu is small. And I think that this is a plus. The broth was dark and I think this might be from their technique of roasting the meat bones or possibly from caramelizing onions and garlic. Yes, this is a meaty broth and you will see fat on the surface. The meats in the soup were pull apart tender, as if the soup had been given the proper amount of time to simmer and build up complexities. This is not a Pho for newbies. And I thoroughly enjoyed it and am already looking forward to going back for more.

With so many Vietnamese restaurants in the immediate area its hard to talk this place up. Its not super welcoming, and you can get the food cheaper nearby, but it definitely is still delicious here.

Their Bahn Mi is delicious!! The only reason this doesnt get 5 stars is because they are so slow to make your order. Although, to be fair, it is a one-person kitchen in there.
