The service at this restaurant is not good, and the Management does not believe the customer is important. I and my friends have eaten at La Mexicana quite a few times over the last 15 years because it is close to our office and the food is edible (not because the food is excellent). I have had a very bad experience with this restaurant twice now, and I will not go back. Today I left a jacket draped across a chair at 3:00 PM when we finished eating. Within 20 minutes, I realized I had left it there and went back to retrieve it. A male who identified himself as some sort of management stated that he saw me and that I did not have a jacket with me. I explained to him that my lunch partner saw me put the jacket on the chair. He continued to indicate that I did not have a jacket with me. Over the years I have left a few items at restaurants and have always been able to retrieve them. Not at this restaurant! This is the second time I have forgotten something at this restaurant and went back to get it within a short time period, only to find that neither the waitstaff nor any one else has turned in my personal item. Even if the food was excellent (and it is not), I cannot afford to eat here again. Is it my fault that I left the jacket at the restaurant? You bet it is! I have eaten my last meal at La Mexicana. I am sure if I left another item in this restaurant, that it would also not be returned. Good luck!

Hmm...no. I dont like this one. If you read any of my reviews, youll know that I judge a tex-mex restaurant solely on the crispy beef taco and the cheese enchilada. So, Ill tell you about those first. The beef taco was covered in shredded American cheese...or maybe it was Velveeta. Regardless, they are both terrible choices. Neither is actually cheese. The cheese enchilada was solid instead of stringy and gooey. I basically played with my food, pushed it aside and resumed eating chips and the guacamole that I made. Lets talk about the guacamole. At most places, guacamole is tableside, or at least made to order. Its chunky and loaded with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, etc. Here, its pre-made, nearly pureed and veggie free. It almost tasted like that nasty pre-packaged guacamole from the grocery stores. And...it came from a cooler behind the bar. Weird. To improve this, I ordered a side of pico (which they charge for) and mixed it in. I used this same pico to save my terrible taco too...as it was only meat and cheese. Oh, and Im pretty sure the refried beans came from a can. Ive purchased several brands over the year and that tasted an awful lot like Gebhardt. The service at the bar was pretty good until he just randomly gave us our checks. We had been there a couple of hours, put back a few cocktails and planned on having more actually. I guess he had somewhere else to be.

Ive eaten here about a dozen times over the last 10 years before finally learning my lesson--which is enough to know that La Mexicanas inexplicable staying power has nothing to do with the menu. Location. Location. Location? That may explain why their entrees are an easy $4 higher than competitors. What, no lunch menu!? Really? The green and brown slime that passes for salsa can be purchased at Fiesta for about a buck ninety-nine a jar, though you never would. Twice I ordered fajita nachos thinking they cant screw this up. Both times they were served with a huge sopping corsage of shredded lettuce and tomato in the center that left a chip-dissolving puddle of what looked like dirty dishwater under the meager 12 or so nacho pieces. (I figured the first was a fluke, but no.) Forget breakfast, they can even make scrambled eggs look unappetizing (migas: dry and rubbery with a hint of char). Service is okay, but thats no main attraction. Visitors, there are at least 100 better places to get your Tex-Mex fix. Think outside Montrose.

I came here a week ago for dinner since it is only a couple of blocks from my new place, so I figured I would give it a try. La Mexicana is a little outdated and pretty over priced. Chips and salsa...run-of-the-mill liquid. We ordered Chorizo con queso dip and it was absolutely horrible. The waiter said it was the best, but it is the only queso at a Mexican restaurant I have not eaten. I was appalled. Ordered the combination platter with three ground beef tacos. The meat was colorless, tasteless, and filled with bland onions. The rice and beans were institutional quality, at best. The margaritas were pretty strong and decent, but I will admit that the guacamole was about the only good thing about this place. So many other amazing places in Houston, so I am very surprised this place has survived for so long.

My breakfast was mediocre, at best. Had Chilaquilles... they were ok. I asked for potatoes instead of beans... add $2.50, asked to add one egg, add $2.50, coffee was $2.50...so my $10 breakfast ended up being $20, with tip....NOW, if it had been above mediocre, maybe I would not have been unhappy to pay $20 for breakfast. As I said, the Chilaquilles were ok, also, the egg was cooked as I asked, but the potatoes we barely cooked. I decided to comment on it rather than send the potatoes back comma partially because when I look for my waiter he was busy talking to another employee and I could not get his attention. Think Ill stick with the neighborhood taquerias.

This is a very good Mexican restaurant located in the Montrose area of Houston or the Gayberhood. The food is very good and very tasty. I recommend trying their beef fajita plates and of course chicken fajita plates. The tortillas are little thin for my taste but other than that the seasoning is just right. The service is very good they have a traditional set up where the males are the servers and the females do all the cooking. This is a must see in Houston. The margaritas are phenomenal. Dont forget to pick up some Mexican candy before you leave The restaurant.

Garbage food - beef enchilada tasted like it came from a can, beef crispy taco without anything but some kind of beef hash that also tasted like boiled beef (something from a can), and a chicken flauta that had some funky tasting chicken in it. Funky as in, perhaps older than it shouldve been to be served. The margarita was ok but was supposed to be $5 for HH but was $7+ and when I questioned the bar tender about it, was told that it was after 7 (currently, not when I ordered it). Never will be back. Over priced, tex-mex without any redeeming value.

Had the worst experience. Went for my mothers birthday. No one liked their food. Food wasnt cooked right. My mom didnt like her food so she exchanged if for another just to find metal in her food which they use to clean. Talked to the manager and she never came back to our table to tell us sorry nor what was going to happen. After we went down to talk to her she dared to tell us that "objects in peoples food is common in their restaurant and tends to happen at times." Wouldnt even give it one star. Unbelievable and disgusting. Never again.
