There is no longer anything fishy about this restaurant. The former Fish & Grill has been replaced with Tex Mex food purveyor though there are some shrimp dishes on the menu. The layout appears as though nothing changed in terms of floor plan and decoration (or lack of it). The restaurant is fairly new, but it definitely has been discovered. The parking lot was full when we went and there were only a few tables empty though there were a number of booths available in the back. The tables are crammed into close proximity such that bustling waiters are frequently scuse me/ pardon me" bumping your chair without an audible scuse me/pardon me" as they weave through the diners. Floor cleaning and table busing was slow to non-existant. Before we were seated, we had to ask that the floor be swept below our table as we brushed the crumbs from our own seats. Chips are ok, but the house salsa was fiery. They do have a less incendiary version if you ask for it and the green salsa for your tacos is very good. Papas needed salt, the picadillo had no potatoes and was, salty that is. So if you like papas in your picadillo, just order a side or papas and throw them in . . . perfect. The carne g. was flavorful and tender. The taco trio I had ( bacon, cheese, and bean, chorizo and egg, and bacon and egg) were all good except for the temp. They were all just barely warm. The coffee was fresh brewed and hot. Other dishes I spied as they were served around me looked good and plentiful. Prices were in the ball park for the usual fare, maybe a dollar more for combination plates versus the same food served further towards downtown. Service was brisk and agreeable with only a smile or two lacking. Next visit will require sampling of the bell weather plate . . . the one dish that usually makes it or breaks it for me - the enchiladas.

If youre looking for authentic Mexican food, not TexMex, this is the spot! I think this might be OUR new spot! My family and I went there for the 1st time on Sunday, 1/17, the service was a bit slow but the food definitely made up for it. It was so delicious we invited my in-laws, my brother-in-law and his girlfriend on Friday, 1/22, to celebrate my mother-in-laws retirement. They were practically in awe about how great the food was. This morning my boyfriend picked up breakfast tacos from there. For the price and amount of food you get, its well worth it. My brother who usually eats 3 carne guisada tacos with cheese could only eat 2 of them. They are overstuffed but in a GOOD way! I think knowing this restaurant is new and working through their new business kinks, might allow you to be a bit more patient and understanding with the waitstaff and cooks. Give them a chance, it will be SO worth it! Just to give you an idea of the food weve eaten to write this review: - Enchilada plate with beef fajitas (delicious!) - Shrimp Nachos (wow!!) - Beef Fajita Nachos (spot on!) - Grilled shrimp plate (OMG!) - Breakfast Tacos: bean & cheese, carne guisada w/cheese, ham & egg, bacon & egg, chorizo & egg (not greasy & good amount inside the tacos!!) - Mini Tacos: asada & al pastor (Im in love!) Salsas: - For most, they are a bit on the spicy side. Sorry, there is not a mild for whimps like me, so I just put a little bit because the flavor is still addicting. However, for spicy lovers out there, you will be in love!! Hope this review helps you!! Btw, I dont know the owners at all (as one of the bad reviews says). I just didnt like to see a bad review of a mom/pop business when you have to realize they are NEW and will have new business kinks to work out. It will get better.

By far the WORST experience Ive ever had. Ive never taken time out of my day to write a bad review for a restaurant before. If I have a bad experience I just wont go to that restaurant anymore. But for this bad experience I am making an exception. I wasted twenty minutes of my life just trying to order food. Every time I asked for beans instead of french fries the lady taking my order insisted I wanted double rice. This went on back and forth for the first 5 minutes. I had my three year old with me and I asked for a kids menu. She pointed out the kids menu section and I ordered him a cheese enchilada off of it but again wanted to change one of the side items and another 5 minutes were wasted. Finally she tried to over charge me almost $8.00 because she decided to ring my kids cheese enchilada and an adult enchilada meal. This is where the headache really began. She then had to call someone else over to cancel the entire order that already took ten minutes. The one who had to cancel the order then asked me to repeat the entire order! So as I am repeating it, the original cashier who messed everything up is telling the one trying to fix it that I want DOUBLE RICE as my sides! It went on and on and on. I knew if i stayed they would just milk me for another 20 minutes of my life so I told them to forget the whole thing. They didnt even apologize. The people leaving positive reviews must be employees or the owners friends.

This is a necessary update to what was previously a decent spot. Yesterday, I ordered my usual 12oz steak and shrimp, medium rare. They served a steak portion that was, at best, 5oz, and it had been cooked far beyond well done. The meal included 5 tiny rubbery overcooked shrimp (menu says 6) that had not been deveined before overcooking them. I asked for a manager and was told there was not one on duty, but he would be back at 9:00pm. I called at that time and got voicemail. I asked for a prompt return call... that never came. I called today and spoke to "Oscar," who was belligerent and argumentative, at first refusing to provide me with the managers name, then claiming he was the manager. When I attempted to share my experience with him, he repeatedly interrupted and shouted me down. My guess is that the owner doesnt know that Oscar and crew are torpedoing his new establishment. Visit at your peril. ** original review ** Its nearby, never crowded, the food is honest, and the prices are good. Its not high end dining, but the ingredients are fresh and the flavors are good. (One exception-- skip the shrimp. If you want that much salt, just spoon it out of the shaker.

Jalapenos is very good Tex-Mex. The menu has pictures for all the dishes which is helpful for the customers and the servers. Their refried beans and Mexican rice is a step better than the rest. So many Tex-Mex restaurants dont get this right at all! Their beef fajitas are very tasty, with the meat well-marinated. The chicken breast dinner also is very tasty, covered in chipotle chili sauce and white cheese. This restaurant has only been open a few months and Im sure there were service or kitchen issues at the beginning. There are none now. Everyone is friendly, orders come quickly and the food is very good. They have a paper menu to call in take-out orders. I did that last week and my food was ready and waiting for me 10 minutes after I called it in. There are very few restaurants actually in Helotes on the way home and this is a good option for bringing home dinner after work. I recommend it.
