guys ...this is not your hibachi-type americanized Japanese fare as one woud find at Benihanas or Wasabis. It is funny how some people rate this place based on the quality of their rolls or fried rice. Their fried rice is probably bad because they use sushi rice. Once again, this is not Benihanas. Go there or to a chinese restaurant if you want good fried rice This place is great because 1) the fish is super fresh. Best toro and yellow tail in town. I dont really care about rolls because it just masks the taste of the fish 2) best Udon in town. Tomo has a wide range of noodle dishes, and their Udon noodle soup can hold its own 3) tradiontal dishes such as tempura, teriyaki-based meats, tonkatsu are all delicious. The place used to be ran by old Japanese lady and her recipes had that authentic home-made taste to it...theyve managed to keep that going.

Definitely a good choice for the Japanese dining experience. Excellent presentation, great selection, and it does not taste mundane. To be clear, personally, I go for the most outlandish dishes on any given menu. I read some of the other reviews, and Id like to point out the following: if youre looking for Americanized Fare and familiar tastes, consult your waiter for suggestions, they will guide & accommodate you. If you want to try something new, or are chasing that vapid feeling of exotica without traveling overseas or spending too much, this is among the best places youll find in the region. Considering the geographic location, everything was always as good as I could realistically hope for. I was first introduced to Tomo over a decade ago by a close friend, and I was never disappointed; their menu has grown and improved over the years.

Service was terrible. We walked in on a Sunday at 7:30 and were told by one of the servers that it was half price sushi. Once we got our bill we saw that it was not half price and our server said that it ended at 7. We didnt fight it, but they should not have said anything if it was not true. This was the only reason we came and we ended up spending way more than we originally intended. (We also had to wait for a table as the 5 tables that were open were all dirty. As the night progressed we continued to see dirty tables stay dirty.) Our server was never at the table, only to drop off the food and the check. The sushi was ok, but couldve been better. We also got a stir fry noodle dish that was awful (lack if flavor, overcooked noodles). We can say with confidence that we will never be back here.

We ordered octopus and mackerel off of the tempura menu. For sushi we ordered the yellowtail, eel, dynamite tuna, crunchy shrimp and a specialty roll, the fantasy roll. To start off the tempura was delicious and we would highly recommend. The batter is complex and crunchy. Very good. On to the sushi. We eat sushi quite a bit. So the presentation was good as was the service. But when we go to eat it... The rice did not have any flavor. Very weak. The yellowtail and crunchy shrimp were ok but the dynamite tuna was not cut well. The eel roll would barely stay together. The fantasy roll was awful. To much breading and cooked to the point that the insides were tough and tasteless. Thanks for the opportunity but we will eat sushi elsewhere.

Would rate a negative star if possible. Worst service ever. Walked in and got seated but after we got seated it took over 20 minutes to get drinks that were only half full. When the guy finally came and only got our sushi roll order and never even asked wwhat we wanted for our actual meal. The owner was too busy talking than working and taking orders. We only got our California roll. Never received our shrimp tempura or octopus. The one waitress working the bar was too busy bossy around the only waiter that seemed to be working. Its pretty much like we werent even there to them. Ended up walking out. And never received the rest of our food. I recommend you take your money else where.

Awesome! The only authentic sushi place in Knoxville. Had many traditional Japanese dishes. Super fresh fish, knowledgeable staff, great specials. My wife lived in Japan for a few years and this is her favorite place. You cant get a lot of the real Japanese flavor and dishes anywhere else. Look deep into the menu past the unbelievable sushi into the soups and octopus balls.(cant remember the name of this dish, but the servers can guide you.) A little pricey but worth it and besides sushi is usually a little more expensive. As far as sushi restaurants go Id say its average price for an above average experience. This IS the PLACE for sushi. GENE POLAND

Was there the other day with a friend. The waiter brought over what we thought was our sushi. The waiter comes over once we have eaten over half our sushi & tells us the order was wrong. He then proceeds to bring out the correct order. Once we were done & asked for the bill, we were shocked to find out that they had added the incorrect sushi to our order. We told the waiter & he tried to fix it but when he came back with the new bill the amount was bigger. So we asked to talk to the owner but he was "busy" all of a sudden. So we just pay the bill, leave no tip & walk out. NEVER GOING THERE AGAIN!

Good Japanese food. They have a kids menu and its not crap frozen fries and chicken nuggets either, no, they give the kids fresh tempura fried chicken or fish both were delicious and I would order them for myself. Its kinda small but it wasnt crowded on a Thursday around 6-8 pm. Service was quick and friendly and they didnt sit us down at a hibachi table like most of the other Japanese restaurants Ive been to in Knoxville. I will definitely be going back when Im in the mood for tempura, sashimi, nigiri or a calm, casual, welcoming little Japanese restaurant.

One of my favorite sushi spots in Knoxville. Tomo has been around for a long time and they offer a full menu of sushi, rolls, and hot entrees as well as various soups and sides. Probably a bit better than Nama, in my opinion, with similar pricing. The unagi don is one of my favorites in town and the rolls are comparable. The atmosphere is low key and it tends to be dimly lit and less vibrant (more chill) than Nama. You dont usually have to wait for a seat. They also stay open late! The green tea fried ice cream dessert is amazing!

theirs come from hawaii. now thats whats up. Consider Nama. It is good marketing given the stagnant economy that is Knoxville (thus is why it lacks diversity like Nashville), thus many ignorant folk will rather have the watered down sushi that is Nama ;). By far, the freshest fish in town is TOMO. Nuff said." . I love this place! The only other place that somewhat compares is Kalamata on Northshore drive. But in my honest opinion, Tomo has fresher tuna (which is the gold standard to see how fresh sushi is).

I order a philly roll and shrimp hibachi. The avocado in the sushi was old and brown, and the shrimp was old and smelled horrible. The fried rice wasnt all that great either. Im not claiming to be a sushi expert, but Ive had a philly roll at Makino here in Knoxville, and a small sushi place in D.C. to compare, and it was one thousand times better. Although the place was nice, and it was reasonably priced, the food was terrible and Ill never go back.
