In my endeavors to fill the empty atom-shredding black hole thats called my stomach I was disappointed after a visit to New York City Pizza. After traveling hours to Hilton Head Island, I was starving. I, and others, decided to have pizza. As New York City Pizza was close to where we were staying, it seemed like a good option as it was "New York" style pizza and was busy, perhaps appealing to us that people liked it. This sure as heck was a mistake for us to choose here. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted in an appropriate manner. But, the gentleman that seated us made a mistake. He brought us to the very corner beside the bar (or rather behind if looking at it from the booth) and in view of the so-called cooks, chefs, pizza-makers, whatever you would like to call them. "Someone will be right with you," he stated, and walked off. Sure, of course someone will be with us, right? Wrong. We might have stayed the night and get reported for vagrancy before getting served. Time passed, people came and went. Waiters and waitresses came and went. Looking at us as they passed to get boxes from behind us for to go boxes. Again, a horrible booth location in the restaurant. After hoping they were just busy and it was taking a while for them to get a waiter over to our table we waited on like the tough people we are, albeit starving. Eventually it came to around 20-25 minutes of the restaurant activity dying down a little, more waiters and waitresses passing us, and dirty looks from the non-Italian, Spanish-speaking, Guatemalan toned "Chefs" that someone from our group finally spoke up and asked a bartender what the heck was going on. "Oh my!" exclaimed the bartender, "Ill get you a waiter right away!" Even this was not instant. A couple of minutes later she told a waitress to go to our table. "Im so sorry, we couldnt see you over here in this corner!" said the waitress. I didnt catch her name; Im not even sure they had name tags. She asked us for our drinks, I wanted a Coca-Cola, but they had Pepsi products, a let down in my book. I took Pepsi, another asked for Diet-Pepsi, and another for a beer. The waitress came back with only the two carbonated beverages. And guess what happened. She left, only for us to find out that she gave me the Diet, and the other person the regular. After the waitress returned she did not have the beer. We told her that she mixed the drinks up and went to get another regular. Returning with the drink she apologized and sat the drink down, and then got a bare straw and stuck it in the drink with her probably greasy hands. Unacceptable. She took our orders and left. We had already been there about 35 minutes. The drink tasted soapy and not like a usual Pepsi. Another 20 minutes passed. Eventually I noticed that the Chefs were cutting up two pizzas that were most likely ours. What bothers me thought is that they made about twenty other pizzas before ours. The restaurant was not even that busy and neither was the people coming in to just take their pizza home. Very disappointing. The pizza was horrible as well. Another disappointment. The crust was from the Lowes lumber department, the sauce was... wait there was no sauce. The cheese was like shoe strings, and the pepperonis were mediocre. And lastly the grease was more abundant than Churches Chicken, KFC, and Popeyes deep fryers combined. Additional details that I would like to include would be the large population of flies and bugs inhibiting the restaurant. Including the bug that landed in the beer. Concluding this less than impressive evening at this restaurant the total bill was $42.55 for two medium pizzas, two fountain drinks, and a draft beer. And the worst service ever. Dont go here. P.S. Yes, this review was long, but if you made it all the way through, congratulations!

So, Heres the deal. I live here on Hilton Head. I have frequented this restaurant many times. The first few times I went, I dined in. The servers are always nice and upbeat. And you definitely have to give them props for keeping up during the busy hours, especially Saturdays. ("Turn-over Saturday", when all the tourists check into the hotel and bombard the place for some good eats after a long day of travel) I always enjoyed eating here. The food is GREAT. Obviously nowhere besides NYC will have "real NYC pizza", but it is a close second for being in the south. ANYWAYS, lately I have been decided to come in and order Carry-out and have a few drinks while I wait. The "bar staff" consists of a "manager" and a few little girls that answer the phones. I put this in quotations because I have never seen such a poorly run staff. As other people have said in the reviews, yes, they are college kids for the most part, but that does not make them idiots, it shows how POOR THE MANAGEMENT is! And for having a "manager" behind the bar at all times, you would think it would be a little more organized! They wont even make contact with you when you come up to the bar, which is supposedly where you are supposed to order carry out. After quite a few minutes of waiting on THEM to finish THEIR CONVERSATION (which was actually them trash talking some of the other employees AND customers, and YES, the MANAGER was trash talking with them!), they decided they would help me. The manager was actually the one helping me. She was EXTREMELY rude, cold, and highly unorganized. And guess what? After she poured my drink, she poured herself one! In the time I was there, I watched her make herself a drink, I saw the pizza guys come pour themselves a nice cold draft beer, a guy behind the bar mix a vodka/cranberry, and a guy from the office (maybe a higher up manager) bring his fresh plate of food from the back, up to the bar, and grabbed himself a nice cold beer!! They were all eating behind the bar, texting on their cellphones, and browsing the internet (not to mention half the place outside smoking). One poor little girl, came up and asked the manager if she could have a slice of pizza before she started working because she didnt feel good, and the manager (woman), told her no, because the man manager doesnt like them to eat in the back, AS BOTH MANAGERS WERE AT THE BAR DRINKING ALCOHOL AND EATING! That poor little girl looked devastated, and actually quite pale and sick looking. I couldnt even believe it. I came in maybe 2 more times after that and each time was just as bad. The management there is absolutely insane. The owner really needs to reconsider who he has taking care of his business! They lost someone who came there many times, with friends, family and even by myself once I saw how it was really ran. :(

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Local Islander for 22 years here. New York City Pizza USE TO BE one of the best pizza spots on the island. Ive repeatedly let the managers know for the last 4 + YEARS after countless awful pizzas that they have a SERIOUS problem in their kitchen. The crust is SO chewy and they started skimping on toppings/cheese. Theyre not making their pizza dough fresh daily anymore and you can really tell! Its so chewy you could break a tooth on it,seriously. It use to be really AWESOME crust a long time ago.The subs are ALL BREAD no meat. When I tell them Im unhappy and wish they would address their kitchen problem, Their answer is always let me buy you a pizza/sub next time you order. My reply is always,"I am NOT looking for free pizza/subs, here, I just want you to fix your kitchen, please!!". A hour wait was never the problem because it always USE TO BE worth the wait.We literally stopped eating there for two years because it was pretty well known that New York City Pizza on HHI was not the same as it USE TO BE by many of us locals. Sooo in the hopes that they finally fixed their kitchen problem I ordered a pizza tonight since it has been 6 months or so since our last attempt. It cost a fortune as usual because you have to order 2 x toppings on this already OVERPRICED pizza and we waited 90 minutes and it was so bad that we each ate 1- 1/2 slices and the rest is going in the TRASH just like the other pizzas. I hate it but we are totally done with New York City Pizza. They expanded their restaurant and I just dont forsee them staying here much longer if they dont fix the kitchen. Some things you can "fake it till you make it",selling crappy pizza for top dollar will put you out of business in due time.
