Ive wanted to go here for so long and loved it! Many friends of mine have raved about this place and now I know why. The manager took us to our table and clarified the price with us--Apparently, a lot of people are surprised to learn that the buffet is more expensive on the weekends than during the week and have been disgruntled in the past. I consider myself a buffet pro and know that yes, of course the price is going to be more expensive on a Sunday afternoon than on a weekday afternoon. Thats the way of the world, folks! Regardless, I thought it was great of him to respond to customer complaints and make sure that clarification was made before we were seated. It was $19.99 per person, but let me tell you---- its an amazing deal for what you get!!! The food is split up into sections and each one had abundant options. Fried foods, salad bar, dessert, made-to-order hibachi, BBQ/Meat, and then a section which was a great mix of American-Chinese food and authentic Asian options. Youll find the typical buffet fare of wontons, spring rolls, general tsos chicken, coconut shrimp, fried rice, etc. But dont worry if you are looking for something a little more adventurous! There was fried chicken feet, octopus salad, kimchi and other fare that you dont seen at most Asian buffets. I was most looking forward to this place because of what Ive heard about their sushi/sashimi selection. And I was not disappointed! Id say there were about 10 different types of rolls in addition to the sashimi. The rolls were fresh and plentiful. The tempura rolls were still crispy, which is almost unheard of in buffet-style serving. I had to sample a little from each section and after three plates, I was incredibly full and satisfied! They also have a hibachi style section where you can create your own dish to be cooked to order. I was far too full to mess with that section, but I appreciate its availability, especially for those who might be pickier eaters than me.

My fiance and I are regulars at this place. Weve been coming since they opened 6 years ago and our last visit was last week. I noticed they are now posting the times the sushi is put out. As a former food service professional, who has been food safety certified in Allegheny county several times, I have always been happy with the level of cleanliness and the temperature of the food here. (The bathroom is always clean too. Best indicator of the cleanliness of any food place.) The staff is courteous and friendly. I have been to many buffet style Japanese/Chinese restaurants and I find Hokkaido to be the best. We have never seen any bugs of any kind there. For the price, especially at lunch, you cannot beat it. For those folks who balk at the table tent asking diners not to waste, it is a reasonable request. Just because its an all you can eat buffet doesnt give one license to pile a plate with tons of food and then leave it to be thrown out. If youre trying something new. Take one. If you like it and want more, you can go back. Seriously, the food is not going to run away. The wait staff never rushes us. So I feel comfortable hanging around. Ownership is well within their rights to charge extra for wastefulness. Dont be greedy. Food you pile up on your plate and dont eat is food someone else will not get either. That is greedy. Taking more than you need or can even eat is greedy. You cant get this quality and choice in a traditional Japanese or Chinese Establishment at this price. If you have soup, sushi, an entree and dessert youve already gotten more than your moneys worth. So relax and enjoy.

We found a cockroach in the soup and the waitress called the manager to come over. The manager didnt apologize at all and just took it away. 10 mins later, she came back and said "its an accident." Its not their fault b/c it seemed the bug "flu" into the soup after its cooked, she claimed it was not cooked in the soup due to the shiny part on the back of the bug. So its my bad that you have a cockroach flu into the soup back in the kitchen???And that is your excuse that its fine since the bug just being soaked instead of cooked in the soup. Then she said we will give you 30% off。My brother didnt wanna make it ugly and didnt wanna ruin the mood for the rest of the day since this is a reunion dinner for us so we didnt argue with her. Then check came, it was only 10% off!. We called the manager back again to explain this. She said "oh because you are still eating, that means you didnt lose your appetite, so 10% off is good enough" and she is being very mean and sarcastic and arrogant. We couldnt put up w/ that anymore, we paid and we left. This restaurants food is disgusting, especially when i think of the cockroach in the soup while my brother has had half of it. Not even mention i just had the same soup. The service is terrible and the manager who is in charge of the restaurant is very dishonest, i cant imagine how dirty and filthy it can be back in the kitchen and i dont think she gives a dame to care for her customers. This is the restaurant you dont wanna go!

Food was ok, not great, but not horrible. Fairly pricey, unless you eat a LOT, which I dont. My family members made out well because they tend to eat more in a sitting than I can, but still pricey. One thing that set me off was that I asked about Ebi sushi, one of the few sushi things I will eat, and I got multiple responses from "no" to "never" to we put it out after 7pm or 8pm. What?? I paid the same price an hour earlier, but dont have access to the same foods??? Maybe the price goes up later, which would be hard to believe because it was expensive already, for the quality of food. Also, someone else mentioned the $8 rule, if you dont clean your plate and waste food, they charge you an additional $8. I sort of understand this so made sure my kid took a TINY bit of things so as not to get overcharged. I took tiny bits of things, but didnt like several things, so what do you do then? Eat something you dont like or get charged $8?? I saw some people inhaling food there so I am sure it is worthwhile to some, but for people who dont eat much in a sitting, maybe save your money. Also, put the Ebi out at the same time as all the over food or advertise that it costs more later (maybe it does?) or advertise that only certain food are available at certain times. I understand that would be hard to do if nobody working there really knows what is available since i got three different answers.

I’ll take the buffet, please. But hold the ‘blood of the lamb! This Japanese/Asian American buffet is a great (lunch) value for the quality of food. There are many places in Pittsburgh to get really top notch sushi (Ginza!) and pay a bit more for it. The food here is not top notch, it’s an 7 out of 10 but for about $10 for an all-you-can-eat lunch... For a while this past year Hokkaido tried to cheapen their sushi, less filling, more rice, fewer specialty options. As well around that time their cheesy Asian pop themed music took a turn for the worse and became cheesy Christian pop music. I recall a song about ‘Jesus’ and ‘drinking the blood of the lamb.’ I don’t like religious music and certainly not songs about blood while I try to eat any more than a Christian wants to sit and here songs about women dancing with joy after getting a bloody abortion. C’mon, Hokkaido!! So I stopped going for six months. I tried recently again and the sushi is better like it used to be. But still the constant Christian music. And being located close enough to Homestead there are occasionally families there that try to bag some of the food despite being watched like a hawk by the staff. They always get caught! I just saw that another sushi buffet has recently opened near Big Lots on McKnight road much closer to where I live. They have Hibachi and a bar! If it’s good and doesn’t play crap music, I’m game!!
