Seems like east passyunk is the spot to eat! We had a dinner date tonight and Townsend did not disappoint. Staff - nice as could be and so knowledgeable about the cuisine. There was one mumbler and had a good laugh with the table next to us because we couldnt hear what he was trying to describe. The took our coats, made sure we were comfy and ready to eat. My husband and I love trying a variety so we comfortably were able to share 1 first course, 2 second course and 2 entrees Below is everything we had - Hamachi tartare - it was very good with a variety of flavors and texture. There was a mixture of finely diced apples that gave it a nice crunch Potato gnocchi - I could have just eat this alone. Possible my favorite dish. There was so much going on, it was in a sauce mixed with bacon bits, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms - just get it Escargot - Im used to escargot being in a butter sauce but this was pleasantly in a creme friache sauce with bacon and carmelized onions. I loved it. Lamb - it is cooked two ways, a shoulder braised with grapes and pear, and then a loin that is seared just right. I The lamb was cooked perfectly with a medium center. The fruit flavors gave the shoulder a great hint of sweetness and the meat was so tender Venison - my least favorite dish. I was underwhelmed and almost disappointed with this dish. There was so much flavor missing from this dish. It was wrapped with some sort of green mixture and topped with shaved truffle. There wasnt any flavor to the truffle.. it didnt have that earthy flavor or smell to the dish. It was just kind of there for me to push off and eat. I would not get this again if I went. Sadly, we did not leave room for dessert. Plenty of space at the tables, there is even an upstairs! They had an adequate wine selection to go with dinner. Overall a solid dinner, we really enjoyed ourselves!

This lovely restaurant in South Philly offers a well-crafted, but limited menu with a rather pricey wine list. Our menu choices were all good served by a courteous, helpful staff. This is not a classic French cuisine nor is it solid Country French; it might rather be called French-inspired cooking. We began with a delightful Amuse-bouche of celery root puree with a sunchoke which was delicious and for our first course (appetizers) the Broiled East Coast Oysters with Fennel, Beef Tartare, Roasted Maitake Mushroom, & Escargot and Brussels Sprout "Mange Tout.” This was followed by Braised Short Ribs, Venison en Creppinette, and Roasted Chicken. All were considered by us as delicious, creative, moist, and perfect. The setting is pretty. The food is good. The drinks were great. The wine was pricey and we lucked out with good street parking. All in all this was a 4-star evening in South Philly.

As far as elite restaurants on Passyunk Avenue go, this one is by far my favorite so far. While they have a chefs tasting menu to mirror Laurel, I suppose, my party opted to order a la carte. Im glad I read reviews before I went, because I planned to save room for dessert. We ended up ordering each of the four first courses on the menu, and each was delicious. We are also glad that we shared everything, because some plates were portioned generously for rich dishes (foie gras and steak tartare). My favorite entree was the duck breast - tender and flavorful. We shared one chocolate souffle between four adults so we could have just a small amount, but two people could easily share the rich dessert. I will definitely return.

Favorite restaurant in Philadelphia! Every dish got nods and sounds of mmmm from all of us. We were enjoying the food so much that we forgot to talk to each other! Highly recommend their crab risotto (special not on the menu), leek soup, marinated hamachi, brandade, and roasted chicken. Price was not bad, we each spent $50 but didnt get any alcohol. Highly recommend this place!!! Good for foodies, date nights, parents. Not recommended for big groups since the space is pretty small. Make sure to order the chocolate soufflé early on since it takes 15 minutes to make. No complaints about this place!

I was visiting Philly for the first time in almost 10 years with my boyfriend for his birthday and went into into Townsend on the recommendation of two different bartenders we met along our explorations. We were not disappointed. We had a small bite to eat and some cocktails/wine with bartender Jeff , he was so friendly and knowledgeable, he did some wine pairing for the foie gras we ordered and gave us some more recommendations of places to try around the city. Highly recommend and totally worth it !!

This place is out of this world. So much attention is paid to producing a quality meal that you will not be disappointed. During my meal, we were delighted by the amazingly decadent Foie Gras Mousse and Lamb en Cocotte. Everything melted in your mouth and was perfectly balanced. I was in heaven. Coupled with the expert take on the wine, you cant go wrong if you can get a table.

Magnificent restaurant! Great ambiance, great service, amazing food, amazing drinks - desert not so much, but still good. This place is one of the best restaurants my husband and I have been in a little while. We eat out a lot and I have to say, Chef Townsend Wentz knows what his doing. I cant say enough amazing things about this place. You have to, have to try it!

Excellent food and service. Chocolate dessert was for chocolate lovers only -- way too rich for my pallet. Cost was high, but would recommend for anniversary or birthday outting. Downstairs tables and chairs were small, so I wouldnt take a party of more than 4 there.

Been twice, both times impeccable service. Excellent modern French dishes. Great wine, cocktail selection, quality bar. Plenty of metered 2-3 hour street parking. Happening neighborhood.

Higher end food and they offer casual at the bar and a little more formal dining at the tables. Reservations is your best bet or they you luck at the bar seating.

We ordered the tasting menu and it was nothing short of an exceptional, memorable meal. Wine pairing suggestions from our waiter were perfect.
