I have been going to Meeka for years. Its our #1 choice for sushi east of the river. In fact, we always go there for special events (birthdays, anniversaries, relatives in town) and its what the kids always ask for as a birthday dinner. We dont go because its comfortable or cozy (its not bad, but the hard benches seem to be a common complaint), we dont go because the service is outstanding or super fast. The service is very acceptable for a busy restaurant. The service is not bad, they dont forget stuff, or mess up our order, its just what I would expect from a busy, non-descript restaurant with just the best sushi I have ever had. My favorite seems to be the Kong roll. Dont get intimidated by the idea of banana in your sushi, just try it first, its really good! We go to Meeka because the food is just so fresh and so well prepared and the prices are so much better than trendy sushi restaurants. Everyone we have ever turned on to Meeka has reported back the same experience we have had. Yummm!

I love sushi - but not Meeka. Was visiting Portland on business and Googled Sushi near my hotel. Was attracted to MEEKA first and turned out it was a Sunday and so they were closed... second choice was HAMA and man it was meant to be. HAMA WAS Great quality, excellent service, good atmosphere, I had all special rolls and it was delicious. They were made with great care and the ratio of rice to other ingredients was spot on like mentioned. Musc was great, place was moden and clean. Not campy like MEEKA. I went to Meeka the next night and it was not HALF as good.. too much rice, too sticky, lame atmosphere, small portions (cheaper price slightly) but the presentation just was like a strip mall would expect. Bottom line: skip meeka and go to HAMA. Hama was all 5 stars in quality, taste, prep, atmosphere. They know what they are doing. Great area too... The kind of place you want to go to when you are out of town. Meeka is well MEEK compared to Hama.

We read the reviews and decided to try. How can you people review this place so highly? Do you not get out? Did you even look at the filthy floor. Dirt in every corner. 1981 Oak Parquet flooring that looks like every crack is filled with years of mopped over grime. Yikes. The Sushi was okay, but I could not get past the slow, and chaotic service and the dirt everywhere. My wife was almost done with her food before mine arrived. Seats are uncomfortable, and the blinds look like they havent been touched in 10 years. As you walk in, you notice water stained wood planters on the inside of the windows. California roll...small, not rolled tight enough and bland. Rainbow roll...fair. I had the bento dinner and the food was very good on this one. Teriyaki Chicken was great...Tempura was great...but I am sorry people...the filth destroyed this experience. We have eaten at over 25 different Sushi places in Portland...and 4.4 stars...No way.

Meeka has some really good sushi. Hello! When Japanese people eat at a Japanese restaurant, it is generally a good sign. I had yakitori and two rolls, and all of it was good. I plan on frequenting Meeka in the future. The people are nice, and the restaurant IS CLEAN!!! Im not some poser that bases whether or not the food tastes good on how much it cost or whether or not "there was a modern atmosphere". Tch. I am reminded of an absolutely horrible experience at the Happy Sumo where I was offended that such a "modern" sushi bar skimped on both the rice and the nori..... as if it doesnt cost you 3 cents you cheap SOBs, doubled by the fact that they use paper mats and dont wipe off the tables. I nearly vomited when I saw a server change the table mat, and all the food scraps that were under the previous mat for however long. Disgusting. I base whether or not something tastes good on how it TASTES, and Meeka has good sushi.

I usually never bother myself with a bad review, but this place was out of scale. More than 30min waiting for my order without any explanation. Just when Im about to ask, the waitress looks at me before I can pronounce a word and she says "yours is coming"...and it comes 5 mins later, in a to go order -I was sitting at a table waiting to eat there. I calmly specified then that I didnt ask for to go, and without saying anything she brought me two dishes and left that plastic container in front of me in a rude manner. I dont know what was going on cause I read all the good reviews before going there, but I think that a place that treat a single customer like that is to reconsider.

This place is a fabulous little oasis in East County. They have a selection of delicious beers, sakés and wines. Their tempura is crispy and fresh. The sushi is really well done. Our favorites are the sayuri and Vegas rolls, as well as the jalapeno bombs. The King Kong rolls are fabulously weird, but disarm you at the first bite. Also, the teriyaki chicken has a wonderful grill flavor, but never tastes charred. And the sauce they put on it is a perfect balance of salty and sweet. Wait staff is always very friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and clean. Meeka is worthy of my five stars and your patronage.

This is a place for people who really like grocery store sushi. It is in par with them probably even less tasting. Extremely disappointed. I strongly disagree with all the positive reviews. If youre a true knowledgeable sushi lover for quality this is NOT the place. If youre a California roll eating sushi lover this is the place for you. Dammit now that I think of it, should have eaten more ginger to prevent the possible diarrhea I might get. Will not be coming back most definitely.

Food is amazing!!! ...from the small salad to the entree, everything was served at a pleasurable temperature and presented well. Our first roll, the Vegas Roll, was the best ever tried!!....we ordered a second one...lol! Overall....Food, Service, and Price were 5 Stars. Interior furnishings and floor are a bit overused, BUT, they provide three traditional eating spaces... This is definitely one of our favorite spots for Sushi and seafood.... Well Be Back..!!!

The food is okay. The teriyaki has more oil than sauce. The sushi rolls have quality ingredients but are rolled very sloppily, and they fall apart when picked up. The service has been very slow, the servers are more often than not stressed out and borderline rude, yelling across the resturaunt. They do try and give you a little free appetizer or dessert if you have waited a long time though. Overall, I dont think I will be coming here any more.

I know a lot of people like Meeka, but its just okay for me. Usually the take a long time to get your orders out and sometimes they get orders mixed up. I have gone several times and this has happened every time. The staff is friendly, but could be more attentive. Sushi is okay, nothing too special. I was very disappointed with their sashimi last time I was there. Prices are fine. If you are in a rush you can always call your order ahead.

Yes, sometimes wait is crazy long. Yes, it needs remodeling. Yes, waitresses need to check upon their customers few more extra times, but... WHO CARES?! Are you here to whine and complain or you want to get VERY GOOD sushi?! Been visiting Meeka since 2004 and now living in northern part of Vancouver but still love to drive out there just for their sushi. My favorites are King Kong and Mango. Pear one is very unique
