Im new to town and love breakfast out, so in my travels I always seek a good greasy spoon for taters and eggs. This place looked perfectly authentic and divey. The atmosphere, relaxed and no frills - a good start, and I have to admit, the eggs were cooked to perfection, and I loved the fresh orange slice and perky sprig of parsely to aid digestion. But it was a good thing they did that little extra because the hashbrowns were so greasy they almost left a puddle on the plate. I love greasy hash browns but this was a bit sickening, and they were way over cooked to mush; so greasy-mushy was the effect. The coffee was very slow to get filled because the 3 others in the restaurant, who were morning regulars, had less interest in coffee. So I was put on their schedule, despite that my coffee cup was pushed in front of me in full view, during her plodding passes in front of me. She seemed on her own schedule, with no interest in mine, despite the empty room and nothing else needing her attention. I just didnt feel any love while there at all. And so while waiting for my coffee refills, I stared at the grease on my plate. This grease meditation during my breakfast, probably affected my review. Lol. I did however notice one of the regulars brought her own, extra large cup, for her coffee. So theres an idea. But even if I brought my own cup , Id still have eaten from that pooled grease and left feeling a bit sick, so I wont be back again, despite that those eggs really were cooked to perfection, and the bill made me feel better for the mistake in choice for my morning breakfast. I wont make the mistake again, but im not mad about it. ;)

The thing that caught our attention was the mention of Chinese flare in an American diner so we checked it out. Being that it has been here overt 40 years and the eclectic asian influenced decor had us intriqued so we had to ask. We were fortunate to talk to Richard the son of the owner and found out that his parents (with 11 other siblings) moved to Honduras from China, then to Florida before settling in Portland. We also leaned about the allegged encounter of his mom with infamous DB Copper at the restaurant after his plane jump. Guess you just have to find out from her yourself by asking her about the $20 that the FBI asked from her to trace the stolen money that she never got back. Then there is another story of Tonya Hardings mom sowing her dress in the cafe. Now the food. We substituted the hashbrown and toast with their egg fu yong. It was definitely a diner food. The food was a typical well cooked but the story of the place more than make up for it.

The food was something I could make at home and in my opinion slightly better. Both of us had Biscuits and Gravy , while mine was "decent" my wife had an undercooked biscuit to where the dough was still , well, dough in the middle. They use a heavy oil for EVERYTHING so.your plate has a nice film after you are done. Hash Browns we both slightly crispy and mushy at the same time. My two sons liked there waffles (not even the worst cook should make a bad one) even though one ofy sons were mistaken for a girl :) Overall ,the lady was very nice who served us and that is the only reason I am giving 3 stars. We will not go back and we are foodys so we are dissapointed with our experience.

The Maple Leaf is a great combination of things that have survived the shift to "new" Portland. Its a small place that looks like it was pulled directly from the 60s. Youll find a mix of retirees and blue collar workers as well as one of the most interesting mixes of foods ever at a diner; American breakfast and American Chinese. Theres nothing fancy, but if you want to eat a real deal omelette and overhear great conversations, this is the place! Karen, the usual server, is a great personality and very attentive. Try the bbq pork omelette if youre feeling up to something new!

Finally stopped in for dinner. The place was so adorable. Very much like the diners of my childhood. Had the N.Y steak dinner-$12.50 was my total bill. It came with both a cup of soup, a small salad, choice of mashed& gravy, or fries, veggies, roll, a 2 tomato slice garnish, ice cream or choc. pudding for dessert, and coffee came with the meal. The t.v. was on a station with Gilligans Island re-runs. How can you get more 60s than that. Got to check out the breakfasts next.

A piece of history in a changing neighborhood. Been in operation since the seventies. Inexpensive. Usually no wait. 5.50 cheeseburger basket. Bbq chinese pork omelot or egg foo young breakfast. OLD SCHOOL chinese food. You know, chow mein with the crunchy noodles. Nothing new or adventurous, just comfort food in a chinese diner.

After an hour of waiting for food we simply left. We went at 11am on a Saturday and ordered breakfast food. They kept saying how busy the restaurant was but at most it was half full. I would never ever go back here. Even if their food is good, you cant get it! Inexcusable. Sad that IHOP had to get our business.

My dad use to come here EVERY single morning, and Ive easily eaten a hundred of their pancakes. They offer a lot, their service is great, their people are great, and theyre about as quintessential of a neighborhood restaurant as you can get! Basically they rock.

In a city that prides itself on its delicious and sometimes overambitious restaurants I was pleasantly surprised by this unassuming gem. Sometimes the craving for greasy, inexpensive, diner food is a desperate NEED, and this place is so very great for that.

Greasy Spoon, Im not sure what else to say. Prices are cheap, service is good, but the food can be dodgy. Ive never had decent French fries here. Its an experience to try out, for the stepping back into time sort of feel.

The best chicken fried steak in the continental United States. The Chinese style pork omelet was phenomenal as well. They are very fairly priced and the staff is friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended

Diner in Portland Or, yes I love the waitress, I love the old school atmosphere, I love their Super Burger basket with Bacon, and their home made Fries, and the fact they serve Chinese food too.

This is one of our favorite neighborhood spots. Not fast or fancy, but very friendly and family owned. Sit at the counter. Plus, you can pick one or two "Foo" Egg Foo Young for breakfast.
