Weve been eating here for over 8 years and I suppose its time I write a review. Ive been contracting with people from india for 15 years so Ive eaten Indian food all over. If you are looking for some American yuppie place to eat, this isnt for you. If you are looking for a real Indian take on the way things should be, this is the best in inner city Portland. The food is authentic and delicious. The service is great (they dont ignore you yet they dont act like some server just begging for a good tip). Once again, this is about eating Indian food. This is not about going to some American food place where you get a bunch of locals cooking and serving so they can head to the bar. This is about having Indian food. Plain and simple. I have loved this place since the first time I visited and will continue returning as long as it / Im around.

India Grill had been on my list to try, since its within walking distance of home, has a nice outdoor deck seating area, and offers a lunch buffet. The lunch experience was rather disappointing. Seating is limited to the second floor, indoor tables. The whole space smelled strongly of a couple different cleaning supplies intermingled with Indian spices, a combination that was far from appetizing. The buffet itself had good variety--many veg options, plus plenty for omnivores. The veg dishes I tried were a bit bland (for Indian food) and lackluster. Service was also lackluster. After trying to make eye contact with each of the two servers for at least ten minutes, I walked up to the counter and handed over payment, rather than waiting longer for the bill. I probably wont return, or at least not for the lunch buffet.

Second time wasnt a charm... Went here years ago and wasnt impressed. Gave them a second chance and it was the worst Indian food my wife and I have ever eaten. Its kinda a charming place, needs some serious updating for as long as theyve been in business. My tiki masala and my wifes mali kofta tasted like the base was made from Campbells tomato soup concentrate. No spices, no curry, very bland. I think catering to "Americanized Indian" palate definitely not authentic. Very pricey for what you get. Dinner came to over $50 for my wife and I and we had to ask multiple times for the side dishes. I was very sad to see theyve not improved, I always try and give a place a couple tries because sometimes we all have off days.

Now granted I went there for a buffet lunch, but the food was really substandard. The four entree dishes tasted almost bland, if thats possible for Indian food. They were salty, and hardly dissimilar between the tandoori, the curry, or the Marsala. I read a comment in here that said the naan bread was more like a cracker than bread. I would describe it as being stale. There are much better Indian eateries in Portland. I tried the India Grill as a change to my usual Indian buffet, Swaggat, but this was a mistake. Even the service was horrible. Ive seen more cheerful staff at a mortuary. The only positive I could give is that there was a chutney that was tasty enough to make the chicken tolerable.

This is the worst restaurant in entire Portland. The food was horrible and literally they have served Eggplant-Potato curry which is of 1 or 2 days old. When asked for extra naans, they said that they are out of them. For a lunch buffet, they had exactly 3 vegetarian curries, 1 chicken curry, rice (jasmine rice - worst of all), pakora (full of oil). And you know the price, its $9 which is very expensive for their very limited items. Charged extra amount and they have a DONT CARE attitude. I request all the people who are reading my review, please dont ever go to this restaurant. The 3 people who manage there look like hooligans and their English sucks big time!!!

Food is okay but they made us wait for 20 mins to order although hardly had anybody out there. Also, first I tried to pay by my credit card and I was told that it is not working. Then I paid by cash. 3-4 days later I found that they have charged my CC also. When I called them, someone picks the phone who could hardly speak english. Somehow she told me that my payment by CC will be canceled and I will get money back. Waited for 1 week and still they have not credited the amount back. Called them again and I was told they were not able to reach me (I gave her my phone number). Let see if I get my money back.

Last night a group of 7 of us met at the East India Grill to have dinner. From the get go, the waitstaff appeared uninterested. When seated, our waitress was hostle and unprofessional. The only reason we could come up with for this type of attidude is we asked ahead of time for seperate checks. Although the food was good, it was not the best Indina food in town and was quite pricey. With better service, we would be more inclined to visit this restaurant again. I hope the managment will take our concern seriously. All in all, good food + bad service + not returning.

I prefer buffets because you get the full spectrum of flavors that make Indian food so delicious and healthy. I loved the flavors of this place. We got there just before they were closing for lunch and the food was fresh and super tasty! Good chai - already sweet - and you could taste the cardamom in it, love it. The spinach dish was wonderful, chicken curry, pakora, everything. Wasnt very spicy, but I didnt mind because the flavors were complex and held my interest. The mint chutney was strong and fantastic. Love this place, cant wait to go back.

My wife and I were first time visitors last nigt and couldnt have been happier! The service was great and the food was incredible! We had 3 in our party and tried several dishes which were all great but will list favorites in order first! Chicken Cheera (so good), Palak Panneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan bread, and Lamb Vandalu. Everything was so good and we had the India Grill Combo platter as an appetizer. Very reasonable price enjoyable dining experience, great service and amazing food! Truly unsure how anyone could be disappointed.

Started visiting this restaurant several years ago when my daughter moved from the east coast to the Pacific Northwest. Indian Grill was around the corner from her house, so we went for the convenience. Now, she lives in the Gorge, but on each of my visits we make the pilgrimage into Portland to dine and pick up food to bring back with us from Indian Grill! They serve authentic Indian food with the most delightful of flavors! Dont miss an opportunity to eat here, coming from the east coast, I know I dont!

Me and my husband went to India Grill hoping for a nice and romantic dinner, my husband left the place with horrible stomach ache and gas. Everything tasted weird. Their chutney looks and tastes weird. It was obvious that they use food color in their chutney. Rice pilaf was disgusting. Someone who had worked there in the past, told me today that they actually use the left-overs rice from the customers plate for future servings. I am sick just thinking about it. Disgusting!!!!
