Being new to Portland, were not exactly privy to where this weeks "it" restaurant is. But then we like to eat our food, not frame it. Our college-age kid was home for the holidays, and all she wanted to do was load-up on seafood...expensive seafood. After researching our options in the Downtown area, I called my banker to inquire on a line of credit. Thats when he mentioned Golden Horse. Fortunately, one of the first places we tried after arriving in Portland was Ocean City out on SE 82nd. Ocean City, like Golden Horse, specializes in seafood, and we were blown-away by Ocean City. So after checking-out a few of Golden Horses reviews, I felt reasonably confident of what we would find: a ten-page menu and entree prices that wouldnt be confused with mortgage payments. We were right on both counts; if it comes out of the sea, Golden Horse probably has it. We ordered: Hot and Sour soup (competent, tart, on the light side). Steamer Clams (fresh, and nicely sized with a ginger root-flavored broth). Seafood Hot Pot (plenty of squid, octopus, scallops - all extremely fresh with perfect texture - and enough shrimp, tofu, bok choy, and ginger to keep it interesting). Rice with Beef and Egg (not the fried rice dish we were expecting at all. This was steamed rice topped with a rich, light gravy of minced beef, egg, and scallion...very entertaining). #2 Combo: Sweet and Sour Chicken, Fried Rice, Subgum Chow Mein with pan fried noodles, and egg roll. All three of us left satisfied...toting doggie bags. And that simply does not happen: once food is on my plate, it rarely escapes my mouth! In fact, it didnt escape for long; Im eating the leftovers as I write this! We have no hesitation in recommending Golden Horse. Dont go expecting great decor, a great view, or a great wine list; but instead expect to simply enjoy great seafood that just happens to be offered at a great price. With everything listed above, plus a fried shrimp appetizer and hot tea, we were out the door for $50...including tip! And it could have easily been $40 had we not ordered enough to feed a family of five, not three. But seriously, quit reading and go. When you get to the door, ignore what you see, go in, and get ready to loosen your belt a few notches.

Ive been eating at this amazing restaurant for 15+ years now. Dont let the atmosphere of the restaurant fool you -- the food here is the best authentic Chinese food in Portland and thats what you should be going here to experience. For those more adventurous Americans looking for some good authentic Chinese flavor, here are a few of my recommendations: ginger and onion crab or black bean crab (either of these dishes are absolutely the best crab you will ever eat - forget your typical crab and butter - you havent had crab until youve had this dish); tofu, chicken, and salted fish clay pot (this dish is meant to be eaten mixed in with a bowl of rice - salted fish is an acquired taste); steamed fish (the live fish in the tanks - eat the fish over rice with the sauce poured over); house special chow mein with Hong Kong style noodles (there is squid and other seafoods in this one - may want to choose a different chow mein if you dont like those toppings, but it is important that you get the Hong Kong style noodles); rock cod clay pot (fish fillets fried and then baked in yummy sauce - great over rice); catfish clay pot (this one has bones, so if you dont like bones, dont get this one - great over rice); singapore noodles (thin noodles with curry powder, shrimp, bbq pork, onions, etc. - super yummy); and salt and pepper squid (this place has my personal favorite recipe for salt and pepper squid - delicious onions, consistently crunchy, fried, salty, spicy squid. Im not huge on squid texture, but somehow this is just delicious). These are just a handful of the great authentic dishes at this restaurant. When my Chinese relatives come into town and are looking for some authentic Chinese food, my family always chooses this place - good luck and hope you feel inspired to try some of these great dishes.

I did not appreciate the way we were rushed out. We came in at 10:15pm and asked if it was too late for is to sit. They hesitated but did say yes. We sat n she came over and asked are we ready. After we ordered n got our food, she stood close to our table so i asked her if they stay open till 11 as it states on the door, she said yes but not always. I took a picture of my food and she says to me, " no, no, you have fun later, you eat now. " When she gave us the bill, she stood there n asked "who pay" as she waited. I told her she was coming off rude and it was not ok. We didnt tip, and she got upset and we told her there was no way we would for service like that. She responds that its only because its late and itll be different next time. It was 10:46 when we finished.

The General Tsos which was recommended by my server was great. The combo plate my guest ordered was an ordinary plate of carbs with a couple pieces of meat inside. The Tsos tasted great, the other tasted like a tv dinner. The staff was not very communicative and I had to grab my own condiments from another table. The lobby was run down and the bathroom lock was not in good working order. There was fresh shrimp in a tank which needed cleaning. Overall our food was 50/50 on taste, and the restaurant and staff needed work. While I enjoyed my food selection, the details here are ignored. I dont think Ill be back as Im scared to think what it looks like in the back when the front is so ignored. Their front awning looks like it needed a power wash 2 years ago.

I had a bad experience here last night on my very first time going here the food was amazing but the lady who served me was rude and when I was done eating and paying the bill I had my extra money sitting on the table beside me and the same lady reached over me and grabbed my $5 bill then she said "Im going to make change for this" as shes walking away she comes back and hands me $2 out of the $5 and proceeded to say "there this is fair tip it 10%" and walked away. I was going to leave a small tip because originally the $5 was supposed to go towards something else but I did let her take it instead of causing a sceen. Even though I loved the food I will not return because their employees should not be doing this to their paying customers.

The food is alright. Its definitely not as authentic as people think it is. Im 100% Cantonese Chinese. The most authentic Chinese food that Ive had was in the Los Angeles area. (But I think that Chinese people are more picky about their food because theyre used the the real thing.) The service, on the other hand, wasnt bad. They were very busy on the day that I went but they still came over to our table often. The decor is plain, but then again who goes to a restaurant to look at decorations? Overall, I say the service isnt bad, decor is plain, cleanliness average, and food is so-so but VERY Americanized and therefore not at all authentic. Although, this is probably one of the better Chinese restaurants in this area.
