Pros: Food Price Cons: Tiny Not really New York Style pizza -Food- It is a pretty decent pizza joint, but I can think of other nearby that I prefer. -Price- It has been awhile since I went, but I dont remember the price being that bad when comparing it to other local pizza joints. Defiantly not New York cheap, but still not bad. -Tiny- It is really hard to fit in the place after you get your pizza. -Not really New York Style pizza- Im sorry, I lived near Albany, New York for four years and have to say that this does not compete with variety, price, or quality of any of the places I frequented. Not only that, it is no where near greasy enough to be New York style. In New York, my favorite pizza was called a Chicken Alfredo pizza, and you could get it at pretty much any pizza joint and is a pretty accurate representation of New York Style pizza. So on this pizza, you start with a really fatty greasy pizza, then you put really fatty Italian food on top of it, and you get a literally pool of grease on top. New York style pizza is greasy and it doesnt care. This place I watched them dab out the grease. It isnt a bad place, but I would not call it New York Style.

If you dont love this place, then I feel sorry for you, friend. They dont pretend to be something they arent. The toppings list is what it is, no artichoke hearts, kale, shaved parm reggiano, gluten free, etc.... Just pizza, slices or whole pies, with a great sauce and good crust, served by good folks, most of whom have been there since I was a teenager because they are treated really well by the owners. They treat their customers well as a result. My DNA is part EFNY and Im proud of that fact. What makes it so good? Consistency, for starters. For over 25 years EFNY Pizza has used whole milk mozza, fresh dough, fresh sauce, and the quality has remained constantly excellent. The menu has not really changed, same toppings list, added beer, italian ices came and went (and I wish were brought back), but its Phil, his sister, and a team of folks that just do pizza, and do it well. Waits are short, prices inexpensive, quality excellent. Cash or check only.

Great Pizza. Genuine New York Pizza. Thin, Cooked Well, Decent Crust. Wonderful Owner and Employyes - Owner - Today This is NY pizza. No frill thin crust, NY pizza. Poeple in NY would buy this pizza. The employees are great, and if you happen to get Gary, do not take offense he is normally optimistic LOL. The owner is a great guy who treats his customer and employees like friends. An 18" pepperoni pizza is $18.00. This same pizza at other great pizza shops in town is $25-$28. Be warned this shop takes no credit or debit cards in keeping with the NY theme. ATM is next door down. Slices are available and are what most people order. Beer is available although I do not drink personally it is nice to have a choice. I have eaten here for 20+ years. They were on of the first in Portland to get NY pizza right. Give them a try, and you will be eating here 20 years from now.

A great and proud local institution. The pizza is delicious, hot, and fresh. One thing in particular I didnt care about was when I came in 4 months ago and one of the employees said like a whiny little emo/hipster jerk "Our owner doesnt accept cards. Hes unique like that" Correct me if Im wrong but what century are we in? Isnt everybody using plastic? Dont you think if you accepted cards you would get more business because everyone expects that? Isnt that just common sense? If you wanna be a hipster emo idiot by all means go ahead. Your sirly attitude could drive away customers. I only gave it this many stars because the food was actually good. You need to have a conversation with your whiny employees.

This little pizzeria is tucked away on trendy three Avenue with a bus stop just steps away from it. The sign does not stand out too well but when you spot the Statue of Libertys torch, you know you are at the right place. Around 2:00 p.m., it was not busy at all. Which does mean if you want a slice during that time the pizzas are not going to be fresh from the oven versus the rush hour. They are the best fresh from the oven. The pepperoni pizza was at least on my top 5 with the crust giving it the punch to get it there. This sure does taste like a New York style pie. For the price, you get a nice big slice of pizza that will be sure to fill you. The owner is New York style as well so do keep that in mind.

The best Pizza West of the Mississipi. Classic New York flavor, perfect crust, and sauce with just the right amount of spice. Many of the pizza artists at Escape from NY have been there for twenty years or more. This is a business that treats their employees well, and this positive workplace is reflected in the quality of the food. Some folks have marked them down for decor, but I disagree. Escape from NY has the perfect grunge style one would expect from a traditional New York pizza place. It feels real and as none of the plastic, shiny, fake quality that is found so often in chain stores. If I were to die tomorrow I would want my last slice to be from Escape from NY.

This pizza is NOT fantastic. In fact its mediocre at best. I expect much more from a pizzeria charging $3.25 a slice and claiming to have roots out of NY. Ive eaten pizza like this from NY and its generally bottom of the barrel, with poor quality ingredients. Dont be fooled by the words "New York" or "pizza" in the title. This place has nothing to do with either. The grumpy, hardened codger behind the counter who can barely warm up a slice doesnt add to the ambience either. Based on most of the ratings Ive seen I dont think this review is going to change too many opinions in Portland, but at least its out there.

They recently raised their prices by about a $0.25 for every type of slice, unfortunately. Still its one of the better options for thin crust pizza in the area. Check out their website for the type of slices you can expect, other than the stereotypical cheese and pepperoni. Also, the ambience and decor is very avant-garde and, appropriately, NY-themed. Check it out while waiting for your order, which shouldnt take long depending on how busy it is when you go. Other than the pizza, the favorite thing I like about this place is that its open until 11pm, unlike most of the other places on NW 23rd.

Best pizza in town, hands down! I cant say that its true New York style pizza but what I can say is that... its my favorite. The no-fuss traditional toppings and thin crust really do it for me. Its served on paper plates and you just kind of plop yourself down where theres room inside the place. Phil obviously runs his restaurant so that the pizza shines and nothing else. Everything else in the place is pretty crusty but who cares, the pizza is awesome!!! PS go on Thursdays at the right hour of the day and experience Phils deep-dish special.

I had the pepperoni pizza which was really good but their menu items seem a little spendy. I got a large whole pizza which was a little pricy but I guess thats what getting pizza by the slice is for and unlike most dine in pizza places these days, the fountain soda here is not refillable. As far as service went, the 2 men who were working at the time were nice and gave me great service. So if I were to recommend this place to someone else, I would totally say give it a go! If its for a big dinner with a good amount of people, Id say takeout.
