So some initial caveats; my family eats here all the time. We obviously like it enough that we keep going back. FPs take on pizza is definitely unique to PDX, e.g. "you want toppings? HOWS THIS FOR TOPPINGS HUH!? CANT HANDLE IT, CAN YOU?!" as opposed to "look at how symmetrically we distributed the duck confit on this gluten-free pie that was delivered by bicycle!". And the decor is a) charming 70s throwback, and b) 100% authentic. You cant fake little league team photos like that. But Im putting on my persnickety reviewer hat here and knocking of 2 stars because I think that FP is under the illusion that their old school pizza joint schtick gives them the leeway to make dumb decisions. And maybe it does, but dammit, this is the Internet, and I shall be heard. 1 - You say that you dont have any slices at night because the Academy Theater takes them all to sell in their lobby. Bullshit. You dont sell slices at night because you want people to buy full-sized pies. You could makes slices for the Academy, and have your own, and people would buy them in both places. Sending me over to the business next door to buy the slices you made, when you know the Academy will just order more when they are out is just making me waste my time, and when Im looking to shove food in a 4-year-olds mouth at 6:45 at night and cant wait 30 minutes for a full pie comes across as shitty. 2 - The crazy toppings are crazy, but sometimes in that "lets call clean and safe, this guy on the streetcorner might hurt someone" crazy. Case in point; your hawaiian has about a full christmas ham on it, and a kids lunchbox plastic cup portion of pineapple. You must strive for balance in the force. 3 - This in and of itself is probably the reason Im knocking 2 stars off; you jacked the price of the Fast & Furious arcade game from $0.25 to $0.50? And then your staff mumbled something about how "we just rent it, the cost probably went up"? My son brought 6 quarters to play that game of his allowance. He was less than pleased to only get 3 games out of it. Id have to agree with him. That game isnt worth half a dollar a play. Im not the one who hung my hat on 70-80s nostalgia for my restaurants theme. You made that call, and you stay true, dont cop out and jack up the cost on a stand-up arcade game that was sub-par for cabinet driving games in 2004 when it came out. So, in closing, see you next week, FP!

My favorite pizza in Portland. I will not say its the "best" nor will i compare it to the east coast or anything like that. Never been there or to Chicago so I cant compare, thus, I pull my dogs from that whole fight. What I can say though is Ive been to plenty of pizza places from San Francisco to Seattle and had many slices of pizza I have enjoyed - "Chicago style", NY Style, loaded, not so loaded, ... all kinds of pizza in my 43 years of life. Flying Pie is may favorite because, for the money, Im getting a good pizza. The toppings are copious and the cheese is stringy and good. The sauce does not over power and the crust is substantial but not 90% of the bulk. I dont mind the "soggy"-ness some complain about. I like to eat my pizza with a fork and knife. A few standout pizzas for me are have been a pepperoni with extra cheese, mushrooms, and olives; pesto and cheese, and some super-duper combo with pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, mushrooms, onions... a pile of stuff. The gluten free crust is good too. Smaller pizza but tasty. The salad is simple, not pretentious. Youve some choices of greens (spinach, common flavors of lettuce) and all the basic toppings. The atmosphere reminds me of a family pizza joint, like the kind I grew up around in the suburbs minus the arcade. I like to go here with a small group of friends or my family.

We went to try Flying Pie tonight after reading several favorable reviews. We are not from here and were really looking forward to trying this place. The girl who took our order was borderline rude, not friendly and seemed like she wanted to be anywhere but there. The table cloth was a bit greasy , but overall for a family restaurant with lots of children running around, it was ok. The pizza pie itself was ok, I have had better and I have had worse. It was a little on the greasy side also. But, the toppings are extremely generous and the crust was delicious. The salad bar also was well stocked and had a nice variety of vegies. Parking is a bit tricky, but if you dont mind walking ( and are able) it is worth the trip.

Food was ok..but my family went there for Husbands 71st birthday since our family grew up on Mt. Tabor. Group of 20. Told to go to the back room. No small children. We were continually chastized from the young lady each of 3 times she came in. She seemed to not know how to smile! We stacked our plates..no messes...she finally told us that there was a time limit. We had been there 1 1/2 hr. We stood & walked out. We seemed to iritate staff that we came in and spent over $200 and sat & ate our meal! Wont return.. The Nelson Family..

Flying Pie makes a good pizza, but they are victims of their own success. On no less than three occasions, I have called in an order, arrived and paid for it, and waited, waited, waited. On each time, I waited for an hour while they were busy, seeing people come and go, before I finally asked where my food was. They had the paid receipt, but had never gotten around to making my pizza. Most of the time Ill get an apology, and once I actually got a discount.

Ordered a supreme calzone from here for the second time. First time was good, however this time my calzone had no cheese what so ever in it. So I called the place and the lady I told this to told me she made it herself and yes she did put cheese on it. OK but Im eating it and there is no cheese in here. She offered a free one next time but was kinda rude offering no apologies. The food here is good when they do it right but probably wont go back for a while.

Unique flavor, flashy presentation: awesome pizza house. For decades it seemed like this place was voted "best pizza in the city", and while they may be more competitors now - there is still something about the pizza here that is special (besides the arial preparation of the dough). The pizza is a bit pricey, and the service can be slow - so dont come expecting a bargain and prompt attention to your needs. Bring some friends and take your time.
