I will start out by saying that Bonsai by Sake has great sashimi and make rolls, specifically, tuna. They also have a good selection of sake, if that interests you. The problem I have giving the an extra star is their execution and service. From the first time I walked in, with a reservation, the host seemed overwhelmed and not certain how to handle guests with reservations, he advised to me walk upstairs - they have seating upstairs by the way. Also the restaurant smelled like dirty mops. It wasnt so over powering that it caused me to leave, but I thought about it twice. After waiting a bit (there was only a few guests, and one waiter), I was seated and ordered a bottle of Momokawa sake (cloudy Nigori) and requested a dozen sashimi "omakase" style or "chefs selection. The waiter was confused by omakase (I didnt actually say omakase) but still... Finally he understood and the order was placed. I waited about 10 minutes before I received my ordered sake - I had to remind the waiter and he apologized. The tuna selection was limited to two selections, but it was presented over a bed of ice (different but good) along with cucumber. It was very crisp and tasty. I then ordered the unagi roll with avocado, it too was very delicious. So the food is very good. I would have given this place a two star if it werent for the amazingness of the sushi chef that is amazing to talk to about the sushi industry and other varoius topics. This experience with the chef helped validate that this might just be a diamond in the rough. Give Bonsai by Sake a try - Im hoping that my questionable experience was just an anomaly.

Are the otherreviews fake?? 2 waitresses, 4 tables of customers, some already ordered, some are almost done. 2 of us walked in, 10 mins to get the water, another 10 after I begged to order, 15 mins later I was asked to confirm my order and it was totally wrong. I retold the order. I was a little bit unhappy and I think she might have missed the appetizer, so I asked if they are just placing the order now and did she forget about the salad, I was told no she just want to confirm. I realized my order was close but still not right. I wasnt happy at this point, and I was told "Im sorry but cant you see we are busy?!" I was a waitress in a Japanese restaurant and Ive seen busy, this isnt. And out of house salad? This is ridiculous. And the drunken noodle isnt good. And Ive never seen Chirashi served in a dish.

I walked in to this place a few months ago and I just keep coming back. Amazing food, everything freshly prepared. A great menu selection and some killer drink options. Really well priced considering the quality of the food. Price wise the menu varies from about $8.95 to $25.00, and I have yet to find a menu item I didnt love. What truly makes this place stand out is the atmosphere. I feel like family coming in here! A truly great staff, genuinely friendly. I cant say enough about this place. I love it. I would recommend it to anyone.

Fabulous service, wonderful waitstaff, the food is fresh and colorful, with healthy options and a variety of dishes the lunch buffet decadently delivers. The prices are excellent for what you are getting and my experience was warm and welcoming with a smile. The restaurant was clean and fresh and nicely adorned with delicate decorations and pillows to sit back on. Im very happy I went here for lunch. Thank you!

Friends and I stopped in before the Steely Dan concert last night. Coming up from Eugene we had no idea where to eat, but picked this little place via a Google search as it had sushi and some other thai dishes to satisfy the group. Were very happy with the choice! Rolls were fantastic, atmosphere was friendly, and so where the hosts. Will definitely eat here again if in the area.

Exquisitos platillos estilo buffet, presentados de manera sencilla pero atractiva. Es un lugar al que definitivamente debes de ir en Portland, Oregon

Searched the local area for Japanese food, scrolled through a couple options until I found this gem. Although Sake is on the pricier end, it was worth every penny. Hefe, spring roll, and chicken teriyaki ended up being around $20. This quaint Japanese eatery is well worth the cost. Definitely recommend.

We were seated quickly (granted, it was a Thursday night), our servers were friendly, and the food was delicious. I recommend their gyoza as an appetizer, and I thoroughly enjoyed the drunken noodles I ordered. Well worth the price.

Some of the best sake and Thai and Japanese food around. I highly recommend this place. Ive been a line cook for over ten years in the Portland downtown area. Give this place a try you wont be disappointed.

New 2016 location is nicer than 2015. Same great service with a smile and excellent food. Not stuffy. Hard working folks make it relaxed, enjoyable for us. Really like the entire package more now. Recommend!!

Best Japanese & Thai food in one place. Simple but beautiful atmosphere & very friendly hostess. The sushi is fresh, phad thai & ramens are excellent! The place is quite small for a large group.

The service is exceptionally friendly, the food VERY good, and the atmosphere cozy. Good value sushi in Downtown Portland. Make sure to try the "Green Station Roll" - it is awesome.

Poor service, dish served incorrectly, decent quality of food Hoping their regular buffet is what people go for, but I wont be back anytime soon.

SA

Overpriced and crappy food. Uses cheap veggies, flavorless sauces, and they had a crying baby in the kitchen the whole time. Not worth it.
