went on a sat. 4/21/17. ok, it was busy. i get it. i was alone, sat at the bar. no one paid any attention to me. and i seriously mean, no one! i had to ask for it. i ordered a bloody mary. it was set in front of me without a straw. reached for it myself. food came, girl just sat it down and said enjoy and i saw her grab her purse and walk out the door. i asked the customer sitting next to me if he could hand me silverware. not a happy experience. i enjoyed the food. so, today, 4/27/17, i decided to take my daughter there. said to self, ok, maybe it will be better, weekday. we go in and i wanted to sit at a table that seated 6. i am physically handicapped right now and i felt i would be comfortable at that table. i looked around and didnt find a place i liked better. there were probably about 4 or 5 tables in the restaurant that was occupied. the hostess told us we could not sit there. i asked her why not. she said because a large party might come in. i said then we will move. she just walked off. i looked at my daughter and said lets just go to the dixie grill. went there, perfect service, table that we wanted, and perfect food. i will never go there again and i will definitely not suggest this place to anyone.

It seems they only got the name right. Basics indeed. No flavor, bland and over priced. The wait was extra long just to be seated for a 2:30 lunch. Then after sitting for 20 minutes they finally take our drink order. Granted after we finally ordered, the food came out fairly quickly. But again no flavor, I got the chicken BLT which tasted like a step above Tyson chicken on plain toast with a $10 price tag. And my fiance got their BBQ sandwich and it was so runny it disintegrated the lower bun, the BBQ had an "interesting" taste about it, not so good. And the sides (Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes) were so bland we couldnt even finish them. Dry potatoes with no gravy and noodles with a miniscule amount of cheese just on top. Hate that we didnt get the experience everyone else seems to have from this place, but we will not be going back. Much better places to eat in downtown Wilmington for the price.

All I can say is wow! We walked in 5 minutes before closing and they seated us. Had watermelon gazpacho, heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella, and crab cakes. Small plate late night dinner was fabulous. Feta cheese in the watermelon was the perfect blend of sweet and savory, crab cakes were light with a perfect sauce and the mozzarella and tomatoes were ice cold with a great balsamic drizzle. Leaving tonight or else wed go back tomorrow. Will definitely go when we come back to Wilmington again. Staff was perfect and made sure we did not feel rushed to leave. Almost forgot to mention the Coca-Cola cake. Never had it before its my new favorite dessert.

On our first visit to Wilmington this was where we found ourselves for our first dinner. It was so good that we came back the next night and it continues to be a favorite now that we live in town. The menu is great and they have a good kids menu as well. Everything on the menu that weve tried has been outstanding, but I usually get one of the daily specials. The service is warm and inviting. The Basics is truly a gem and one of the best values that youll find in Wilmington (or anywhere else that Ive experienced).

My girlfriend and I ate there tonight. Excellent service. Best service Ive had in Wilmington in years. The atmosphere was perfect. Laid back and unpretentious ,but classic and warm. I had the shrimp and grits which was perfect for a late fall night. The green tomato bacon gravy was right in step with the grits which were unusually, yet perfectly, clumpy. It was a nicely sized portion as well. All in all a homey well seasoned meal. I could not recommend a casual downtown Wilmington eatery any more than The Basics.

I came to this place because the other place where I order shrimp and grits was closed.I ordered shrimp and grits but it was not as good. A lot of grits and huge shrimps buried in the grits but it had an alright taste. I would come to this place again but will stick to my original place for shrimp and grits. The Southern style Benedictines with a lot of gravy so if you are not a gravy person then specify less gravy if not you will have a mountain top of gravy.

The absolute best burger I ever had was here. I cant remember what they called it, but it was a daily special and every time I go back I hope theyve got it. Alas, I have yet to find it again. I also recommend the macaroni and cheese, and if youre in the mood for a dessert (which I dont do often), try the Coca-Cola pie. It was awesome. The place is a little pricey, but Ive never eaten anything from here that wasnt excellent.

I cant understand why I keep going back to give this place another try and why the other reviews are so good. I have never - never - received good service or even mediocre service at this restaurant and tonight was no different, except this time I just left rather than pay for the abuse. Who is eating here and claiming the service is good? The same people who eat at McDonalds and Subway all week?

Good service, nice atmosphere and great food. Kitchen has skills. Service was on top of everything. I enjoyed the special, a duck with loads of risotto and asparagus. Their generous serving will not disappoint the hungry. I didnt go two days in a row because I didnt want to be a stalker. I wish I could bring this place home with me. I cant say enough good things. Go.

Had a chance to visit here on the fourth of July, while many of the downtown restaurants were crowded with long waits, The Basics was not. We had a very enjoyable meal and awesome dessert. The Shrimp and Grits was very good with a Cajun inspired sauce that knocked it out of the park. The Coca-cola cake was a wonderful end to very nice meal. We will return.

The Basics is a great place to eat. The service was quick and the waitress was really nice. I recommended this place to some coworkers while in town on a business trip. After having ate breakfast the previous day I wanted to try it for dinner and everyone enjoyed eating here for dinner. I will definitely be going back the next time Im in town.

It was out first time for dinner last night, and everything about dinner and the experience was excellent. Staff great. Food spectacular. Dessert good. Also liked the beer selection as well although some more craft IPAs wouldnt hurt :) Also like the music memorabilia on the walls, and sent an email with a suggestion. Thanks for a good time!

Spinach feta grill was awesome!! The poached eggs were done perfectly so the yoke dribbled all over the wonderful bread. The food was warm and served appealingly. The service was excellent. My husband had the special of the day omelet with a peach arugula pesto on top - yummy. I highly recommend The Basics for breakfast or brunch.
