Best kept secret in Durham, but probably not for long as their new owners accelerate the growth of their much deserved fan base. If you need a super fast lunch at a reasonable price, you cant go wrong with one of their sandwich/side combos. I like the roast beef on 7 grain bread with Sunchips. But the specials - OY VEY THE SPECIALS - are always so delicious. Whether its falafel fridays, their black bean tacos, the vegan tofu BBQ sandwich, the veggie burger, or perhaps any of the dishes at one of their vegan or vegetarian pop-up dinners (South Indian night, anyone?) their food has just got it GOIN ON. I mean, its even making me use caps for goodness sake. They wont win any awards for decor on the inside, but you cant beat a summer day people watching on the terrace, surrounded by fresh herbs and veggies. And you wont care what the decor looks like after your first bite of their locally sourced, high quality ingredients. Youll be all about the food. Plus, who couldnt love a place that hosts a pie eating contest on pi day?

Wonderful locally owned business. Great day-old bread prices (I freeze it when I get it anyway, so the day olds are perfect for me:) The staff is always very friendly, and have a smile:) The only reason I am giving it a 4 instead of a 5 is because I am a designer, and I am painfully aware of the terrible ambiance in the building... I wish that they would just put a bit of energy into making it a cozy and sweet little cafe. As it is now, I run in, get my bread, and run out. (It is that bad...) So I recommend it as a daily/weekly bread and goods source, or a to go lunch place, but not a sit-in cafe. It is not a pleasant place to sit and eat.... sorry guys!

I am a regular purchaser of Ninth Streets "Omega seed" bread, which is lovely fresh or toasted and the best bargain in Durham for locally-made whole grain bread. Every few weeks, I same-day order directly from the bakery (rather than buying the loaves at Whole Foods or Kroger) on a day this bread is baked (wed and fri) and freeze for lunch sandwich-making in the household. The other Ninth Street breads are less interesting in texture, crust, and moisture. Their vegan coconut cookie is tasty and sold at various cafes in town as well as in-store. (I cant evaluate in-store lunches.)

The blonde girl who waited on us was so rude. Then we went to have coffee at a table. I plugged my iPhone in to charge it for a few minutes and she scolded me... She said they didnt have enough room on their electrical strip (which had at least 5 spots open). I will never go back. I usually praise people and businesses on here but she should be fired. In addition, the pastries were not very good. Bad food, bad service. We immediately left and went to beyu cafe and had a terrific experience and great breakfast.

Bread is obviously amazing... but the new chef Matt really has it going on over there for lunch and early dinner... great selection of food Ive heard... but the vegan dishes and Falafel Fridays are amazing. Farm stand on Fridays... The folks there are the best and really care about people, Durham, and food. The vegan cookies are out of this world. Add to that the homemade kombucha.. and the bakery is heaven for me. If I ever thought of moving to Durham, the bakery would be first on my list of pros.

Great lunch time meals (especially Tuesdays), nice atmosphere--friendly and cozy, not fancy...but mostly, really nice employees who make you feel welcome and appreciated. Also day old bread sold at very reasonable prices, and very tasty coffee. An environmentally friendly place as well. This place just feels good!

I had a great sandwich at ninth street bakery. It was reasonably priced and tasty, obviously with fresh ingredients. I also had a cup of potato soup, which was below average. It was brothy, but not quite salty enough to count as broth, so really just watery... watery potato water with a little chunk of potato.

This place keeps it simple. Friendly but not "fake" staff, good sandwiches, my favorite coffee downtown, and decent prices. My only complaint is that if you order soup later in the afternoon, its often cooled down and not the best tasting.

Met a friend for lunch at the Cafe. The bread wasnt good because it was a bit dry. We were disappointed, and decided to write this review to offer a balanced perspective. Our hope is that we experienced an unusual event.

Ninth street bakery is a great lunch spot. They are friendly, fast and their food is great. I have a gluten allergy but they have several gluten free options, which are delicious. I highly recommend!

Great kombucha. My standard meal is their Curried Lentils with rice and salad plus a glass of their kombucha. Always delicious. They have good options for people avoiding wheat or gluten.
