Horrible! It was my first experience and my last. I stood in line behind 3 older ladies, and the guy working there (probably the owner, since he was older too) began rushing the ladies to complete their order. I had no idea he had asked me what I wanted because the 3 ladies were still in from of me. When one lady turned around and told me he was talking to me, he goes "Yeah you! Im talkin to you. What do you want?" And when the ladies move, he begins talking to someone else, instead of taking my order! Finally I say, "Hello! Can I have a flounder/shrimp basket?" And he says that they dont have flounder nor shrimp, and that they dont even sell shrimp. Clearly, theres a HUGE sign on the building that lists the kinds of fish and shrimp they sell. I just said, "thank you anyway," and walked away. He the begins shouting at me, "Dont leave here hungry. Buy something!" I was sooooo over it. I already know that most mom and pop restaurants will 120% of the time not have everything on their menu, but CUSTOMER SERVICE is also a deciding factor in patronizing the business. I left and went to a soul food restaurant in Cary, and the ambience was extremely better, the staff was very accommodating, and they werent out of any food.

I saw a story on a local TV station that talked about how good the food is and decided try it. The BBQ is very good, probably the best in the area. The mac and cheese was good if you are a mac and cheese fan. The collards were great. Now, having said all that, it was the nastiest place Ive ever eaten in. If you eat in, dont look at the ceiling and ceiling fans because you will lose your appetite very quickly due to all the greasy dust clinging to the ceiling tiles, fan, and light fixtures. I sure wouldnt want any of that to fall into my plate as I was eating. It has a 96.5% grade A sanitary rating that I dont understand how they got. One of the employees was "cleaning" the table tops with a spray bottle marked glass cleaner. Something with a disinfectant would be a better choice. The tables and floor were nasty, no other word for it. The place has the potential of being top notch, but the lack of cleanliness is costing it two stars in my review. I hope that they get the message that a good cleaning and scrubbing is needed and follow though with it. If so, I would go back. Otherwise, I dont think so, and I really like the BBQ It really is a shame that such good food is served in such a dumpy place.

I adore Backyard BBQ, when friends from out of town want a taste for Southern food/local BBQ this is always the first place that comes to mind. Its a bit of a hole-in-the-wall joint, lets get that out of the way first. So if that is a problem for you then you are going to be missing out on the best bbq to be found in Durham (and the triangle from what Ive tried, though I havent tried them all). Their pork is delicious, but on my most recent visit I had their freshly fried fish and it was great also. Ive tried the sides of mac-and-cheese, baked beans, Brunswick stew, potato salad and collard greens and have not been disappointed. I grew up being fed by a born-and-raised NC grandma and Backyard BBQ really captures that great, classic NC food. While I can certainly enjoy the fancier meals prepared in the assortment of restaurants downtown, when I have a hankering for that classic NC bbq Im glad we have Backyard BBQ to fill it. My main complaint is I just wish it was closer to me, as I dont make it to this side of Durham often.

Let me tell you about Backyard BBQ... they set the bar for an NC BBQ joint. There is writing on the wall in crayon and marker. The prices on the posters of the food plates, are updated in black marker. The food is served in styrofoam, whether your getting dine-in or take out. The silverware is plastic. And the food is knockout. Its incredible. Its NC style BBQ at its best. The pulled pork sandwich (of course with the coleslaw in the sandwich!) is delicious. The sides are crazy good. Dont get the mac-n-cheese. I heard a customer next to me complaining about all her son orders, is double mac-n-cheese and wont try anything else. So I got me some mac-n-cheese. It was good. I also got some of the brunswick stew. I couldve ate a whole gallon of that stuff. And the collards... yummmm. The fried okra and hush puppies are addictive. Be careful. I usually have to get an extra order of hush puppies, just because. And the prices are reasonable. The only downside is the place can get very busy during lunch time.

I work just around the corner and hate that I cannot give an outstanding review. They are really hit or miss. There have been days I have gone and been completely blown away by the service and quality of food. Then there are those days that I go and swear i will never return. Pulled Pork- amazing on a good day, just the right amount of vinegar and spices. Ridiculously tender, almost to the point where it doesnt even seem like a meat product any longer. Ribs - Best red bar b que sauce EVER Sides - Mac and cheese can be a bit too greasy sometimes, but the greens always help balance that out. Brunswick stew a too sweet for my liking, but texture wise fantastic. Fried cabbage and okra, pretty close to perfect. I really love this place and wish they would get all their staff on board with putting out the same expceptional food and service that attracted me on that first visit

Gotta give this place 5 stars to balance out some of the haters. As something of an NC BBQ connoisseur, this place is the real deal, as good as youre going to find pretty much anywhere. The meat is perfect as is, although if you want to sauce it up, theyve got you covered (always go vinegar-based with pork BBQ, or youre simply doing it wrong). The hush puppies are likely the best Ive ever had, slightly sweet and just delicious. And you pretty much cant go wrong with any of their sides. I see several people complaining about the service, Ive never once had a problem and Im a pretty regular visitor. Theyre always slammed during lunch and often at dinner as well, so they dont exactly have much time for personalized service, but thats to be expected. If you want authentic NC BBQ, this is the place to go.

I first heard about this place on Man V Food a few years ago. Today, I finally checked it out when my parents took me out for my birthday. It was definitely a busy afternoon with the long line from the door to the counter. I ordered a turkey BBQ plate with mac and cheese, collard greens, and two pieces of chicken all white. Everything was delicious; their turkey BBQ was excellent, the chicken was cooked to perfection (crunchy skin and juicy meat), and all of the sides were very good. My parents both ordered the fried whiting plate with yams and collards; they enjoyed their plates and even bought some lunch for work. The place itself does have some wear and tear, but what they offer is worth returning for more visits. Another great BBQ and soul food joint in NC.
