I happened upon this place searching online for some good bbq. I was in the area for business and coming from Houston, TX I was in the mood for some bbq. The place is TINY! I drove by it in the dark cause I wasnt expecting it to be so short-looking from the road. It was packed, so I was expecting something great. If its busy, thats usually a good sign it must be decent food. Well, apparently there are a lot of people in Raleigh who dont know what good bbq is. The meat was bland and I guess Im NOT a fan of vinegar-flavored bbq, Im used to smokey-flavored bbq, not just vinegar-soaked food. You know...like "barbecued" meat. The only bright side of the meal was the fried chicken. I ordered a chicken/pork plate and asked for bbq chicken, which I was told they were out of, so the guy behind the counter suggested the fried chicken, as it had just finished being made. The baked beans were STRAIGHT FROM A CAN!!! Absolutely ruined my dinner! They didnt even attempt to flavor it up with something extra or anything! Literally they were exactly as they would be when you open up a can and throw it on a plate and warm it up! And they tasted exactly like cheap canned beans. Really disappointing. The fries were VERY average. Mushy, and flavorless. Im sorry to write a bad review, but this place really wasnt worth the money spent on dinner. I would go someplace else if I were in town again.

If you havent tried eastern NC style barbecue you owe it to yourself to at least try the best when you do. Admittedly, Eastern NC style is an acquired taste that if you are used to red sauce style you will think us crazy. If we could just all move past the fact that all barbecue does not need to be the same I think people would appreciate our style more. Yes, it is very different, but oh so good. Many local cue joints will provide you some meat that is very unappealing and has a variety of non-meat like substances in it. You will not find that at "Ole Time Barbecue". The shredded pork served is only the highest quality with no surprises to be found and the sauces are superb. There is no better hush puppy in Raleigh and combined with the cue equal no reason to go anywhere else. There are no white table cloths here so come as you are and you will be accepted as you are... as long as you dont ask for western NC style cue.

This was our LAST trip to OTB. Service was slow, the food when it arrived had CLEARLY been sitting in the steamers or under the hot lamps too long as the chicken we had was dry & flavorless. BBQ was NOT great - average & electric cooked not smoked or grilled - why bother?!! Mashed potatoes - instant, corn - canned, gravy - canned, green beans - canned with ham hocks added (bleh), fries - limp & cold, baked beans - canned, potato salad - industrial, collards & cabbage - greasy & old, slaw - watery. Unless you get the ribs right after they come off the cooker, theyre not worth the $16 youll pay for them. Our waitress could care less that we were there as she seemed too preoccupied with running her mouth with the rest of the staff than serving the customers - TOO loud & obnoxious & squabbling coming from kitchen crew! NEVER going back!

First impression walking in was a small dining area heavy foot traffic in and out. Didnt see anyone or get greeted by any waitstaff. The waitress (literally) tossed a basket of (tasty) hush puppies onto our table and walked off still without greeting my group. After she had a lengthy and loud conversation with a group next to us she came up to our table. The entire time we received poor customer service from this waitress and never felt welcome here. When a large group from out of town came in she was even more cold to them. From the cash register she started threatening a customers well being behind their back trying to arrouse a response from other customers. Food was good although I wouldnt recommend coming here solely on my experience with a nasty, miserable waitress. Maybe just get the food to-go..

My husband and I dined here recently. The BBQ was good, but nothing special. Boiled potatoes were just plain potatoes from a can - no special seasonings or anything - just barely warm, canned potatoes. Pastry looked delicious, but tasted funny - not sure how to describe it except not good. The place is not "charming" or "homey" - its a dump. Only thing I can say about the service really is the waitress took our order and then left plates of food on the table - thats it. She never came back and we were the only people in the place except a couple of folks at the counter that the waitress chatted up the entire time we were there. I would take away at least half a star for the horrible service. I read all the reviews before going here and they were nearly all good - maybe it depends on the day.

I have not been here and I never will, but my husband and his best friend have. Their work uniform is a tye dyed tee shirt and they were on lunch break. The waitress was rude and when my husband asked for a refill of his drink she told him that she would only get him one if he removed his shirt. They explained that it was their uniform. She never apologized. Also while they were there they witnessed a black gentleman waiting to be served. It was not busy, so there was no reason for causing him to wait at all. He waited a long time and when he was finally greeted she was rude to him as well. Please do not support an establishment that holds others with such low regard. This little backward hole in the wall may have good food, but their value of others is disgusting.

The place is cute in a "ran-down-diner-by-the-side-of-the-road" way. But thats ok, since some of the best food ive had around the world were in places shabbier looking than this. But Ole Time aint one of them. People who posted rave reviews are either friends/relatives hyping the place up on the net or need to get out more. Anyways, on my trip there the waitress was friendly enough, hushpuppies were good. Fried chicken tasted like its been cooked 4 hours before in oil thats hasnt been changed in a week. Stone cold mashed potatoes. The cue... ah the worst for last i guess. Brutal. Sorry, Real cue gotta be slow smoked with real wood and the only smoke the meat at Ole Time sees is that of a Cummins diesel driving by the joint. And tastes like it too. Nuff said.

This is the one and only BBQ place where you can get Five Start food and they treat you like family. If you are in the way, they will tell you to get the hell out of the way, and call you honey at the same time, just like mom. This is Raleighs best kept secret but not really, everybody knows Jerry Hart and all that he stands for in his community. His heart is as big as his belly (Love you buddy) and all the staff is wonderful. If you ever wonder what great southern food tastes like, look no more and get down to Ole Time Barbecue. Heres a tip, dont wait till lunch time, it will be pack to the doors! And you will suffer if Jerry and the gang are cooking a pig out front, cause you will eat your shoes before you can sit down!
