I grew up in NYC but spent a great deal of time on the West Coast, where bad pizza is the norm. I came back and the first thing I did on my way home (to the Bronx) from JFK was to have a New York slice. It was as if the sky had split open and I was being fed by the hand of God! It was, positively, a mouth-gasm. Cut to now, in New Paltz... my new home. I searched, searched, and searched for that "divine street slice", only to be disappointed again, and again, and again. Some had too much cheese, some too much or not enough sauce, some were too dough-ey (a lot failed miserably on the crust department). I wont mention any names, but they all sucked. I had originally written Gourmet off after having their shrimp pizza, which was... hmmm... eh; but since they stay open pretty late, I ended up there a few nights ago with my fellow pizza addict buddy. Oh how wrong was I! The cheese slice (as any real pizza lover would know, the plain cheese slice is the yardstick with which all other slices are measured) did all of the things a cheese slice should do. I have a special series of tests I run on a cheese slice: I fold it, hold it vertically and if, after a few seconds, an orange-ish, greasy, liquid drips down then it is a good slice. Then I pick some of the cheese off of the crust and examine the crust underneath. If the cheese is too gooey and sticky and wont come off then it is not a good slice. If it does so with ease and underneath it a ridgey, slightly saucy surface is revealed then it is a good slice. Last, but not least, I scratch the bottom of the slice. If some of the crust flakes off in thin (almost philo like) layers around the "burnt" spots then it is a good slice. If all these elements are in place but corn starch was added to the bottom of the crust then the slice is automatically DISQUALIFIED. And then theres the taste test, which I wont go into detail about, except to say that New York pizza has to have that certain, very distinctive taste. Gourmets cheese slice fared excellently in all of these departments! It was a damn good slice. Its still no Lombardis or Famous Rays... but its the best that I have had in New Paltz... with the possible exception of that shop by the Blockbusters, which is very, very good as well.

Im 1,200 miles away, reminiscing about my time in New Paltz and all the good times Ive had chowing down on a warm slice of CBR on the stoop across the street from Gourmet. I owe these guys a 5* They got me thru undergrad, they gave me a reason to go on late night walks for pizza with my gf, and theyve got a place in my heart (no, really, I have a lot of cholesterol tartar in my veins from these guys... Theyre literally in my heart). Thanks, fam.

They have THE best CBR (chicken, bacon, ranch) pizza Ive ever had! The pizza maker really knows his stuff (the guy w/ the glassed and hat). Also, the other lady (really short hair and blond) was really nice and great to talk to while I wanted for my slice! Great service! Great pizza!

Pizza had enough cheese to be on 3 pies grease dripping everywhere flimsy thin crust prob from weight of cheese. So bad we threw the whole pie out. The fries we ordered were in tinfoil and soggy.

Pizza is pretty bad unless you are drunk and employees refuse to let you use the bathroom even if you buy food. No real reason to go here if any of the other local places are open.

I really like their chicken wings and they are SO cheap. I think wednesdays are 40 cent wings. The pizza is not what you go there for, you go there for the WINGS.
