I had this place bookmarked for over a year before my friend suggested it to me out of the blue. Fun place for decent fish. If youre looking to escape the questionable AYCE places in Bensonhurst, but arent willing to pay a premium, then this would be your joint. Kitschy restaurant, if there ever was one. I cant even start with the carpet situation; the scribbles on the wall, however, brought me back to Takeshita Street in Tokyo. The whole place is an interesting conversation starter. On my 2nd visit, it was New Years Eve, and since Geido doesnt take reservations, I knew we were in for a wait. I believe we waited a little over 45 minutes for a table of 11. During that time, the host, who was armed with a positive vibe and the cutest dimples ever, was very friendly and engaging. He kept us updated and reassured us that he would try his best to get us seated ASAP. I was very impressed by how he handled himself, considering Geido always has a crowd standing in the black room outside the main restaurant space. Im going to warn you that it isnt fun to stand in this awkward, unlighted & unheated black hole during the winter. When our bones warmed up, we split the table up so the two halves could share dishes. I was impressed by the fact that Japanese chefs worked the counter. Usually, that means the standards for cuts on the fish and the freshness of the fish can be vouched for. I immediately ordered the uni, but when it arrived, I was disappointed by the color and taste; instead of the familiar bright yellow, I got a dark tinted piece. I was glad that we only ordered a pop each. The rest of the food included various dishes like the spicy salmon salad, sushi rolls- both regular and specialty, udon and rice dishes with tonkatsu(breaded pork). The Obama roll, dubbed a specialty, was an abomination. I didnt know what I was eating because it was shaped like a tempura football. All I got was the fried batter and very little fish. I failed to see why it was even named that as it bore no resemblance to anything that reminded me of our President. The other half of the group also ordered it, and I could see that theirs had more fish within. As I looked over the bill, which was laughable since my math is atrocious, I noticed there was a dish that was unaccounted for on both ends of the table. I notified the waitress, and she was hesitant to credit the sushi plate. She said that no one stopped her when it was placed on our table, but both sides were 100% sure that we didnt even eat it. After some back and forth, she finally acquiesced and removed it from the total. It was a minor hitch, but I could see her seething below the surface. Though it was an average place for food, the casual, but vibrant environment does entice one to return. For fun, not necessarily for food.

Ummm... This isnt the best sushi Ive ever had (or the second best.) I would say the quality is on par with your basic NYC Seamless late night sushi delivery... The mackerel sushi I had was actually pretty bad - way too much vinegar and didnt taste fresh (which probably accounts for the vinegar.) Miso soup was nothing special. So why not just get delivery from Seamless? Well, the other reviews are right - service is fast, friendly. Its laid back and everyone here (guests and staff) seem to be having a good time. Good meetup place for friends- pretty roomy space. Okay, if you want alright level inexpensive Japanese food but dont want to eat it in your apt alone...Try Geido. Id say youre guaranteed to feel welcome and included. But if youre looking for a higher quality japanese food or "special date" experience... Look elsewhere.

A great little place on Flatbush to get a nice inexpensive, high quality Japanese meal. Had the ramen here once which, while nothing amazingly special, was right on in terms of just plain, good old fashioned comfort food. Nice firm noodles, tasty broth, all that goodness. Had dinner here another time and got a plate of Japanese noodles with veggies. Dont remember what it was called, but it was really good. All of the rolls are well done. Everything comes out quickly, and the staff is very friendly. Glad we walked in!

I absolutely love this place. My wife and I go there once or twice every month and always leave satisfied. We usually take "Geidos Special for Two", it costs $36 (if Im not mistaking), and the portion is big enough for two people. Green tea is served for free. The staff is very friendly. The place is usually crowded and noisy, but thats the case with any small restaurant that serves good food. I think the only Sushi place that can beat this one taste-wise is Blue Ribbon in SoHo, but you cant compare the prices.

What used to be such a treat to go to has become depleted with mediocrity. The portions have shrunck by 25% along with the flavor of the food which used to be amazing. The business here is always booming so I wonder if the rent went up? I just wanted to com back and update my comments. I have gone back several times since this review and Geido has gone back to its former glory. It must have been a one time thing.

I first ate at Geido in 1986, a year after it opened. Osamu has been serving authentic sushi for 28 years. We have eaten sushi all over the world, but this is truly a great sushi restaurant. Osamu practices the art of sushi. It melts in your mouth. When we visit NYC, we always find time for a dinner at the Geido. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. Ask for the Omakase.

The ambiance here is like no other sushi restaurant Ive ever visited. The urban graffiti style decor of the walls intrigued me from the get-go. The gyoza are ever so lightly fried - done just right. Dont miss their spider roll (soft shell crab and other ingredients such as cucumber, avocado, lettuce, and spicy mayonaise, rolled inside nori and sushi rice). Super flavorful!

I always pass by here and always was curious, with one window and a door. I tried this place last month, there was a wait but the host was accommodating and just in general had a happy attitude. The portions were large for the price. The walls were decorated by writings and drawings. I would come here again since we only got to try a portion of their menu.

I couldnt believe how cheap it was. And the quality and variety of japanese dishes and sushis and cosiness in that downtownish /Williamsburgish atmosphere restaurant is a must! Get ready to stand in the line for some minutes especially on Friday and Saturday nights. The desserts are the best even compared to a 5star japanese restaurants.

Hands down my favorite neighborhood spot! Super fresh fish all the time. Warm, friendly staff and service - you go there once and they remember you forever. They have an amazing sashimi plate that is so reasonably priced, theres no reason you shouldnt be there once a week... And if you were, theyd probably buy you a drink each time!
