Our first time eating at Don Juans. Service initially slow (took a while for a wait person show up). We took time to review menu, and it was odd, to me, that a Mexican food restaurant had "Fish French style". I ordered the sweet tamales w/ sour cream, and enchiladas. Enquired if they had black bean enchiladas, and the server said, "No". Ended up ordering FISH enchiladas w/ sweet pepper and onion (all mixed together) with green sauce and cheese on top. Ive never encountered a menu w/ fish enchiladas before and was not expecting much. My husband ordered the pork chops w/ rice and black beans. My dinner came w/ rice and beans, as well. The sweet corn tamale was good, not great, but tasty enough to eat. Our entrees came out quickly and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the fish enchiladas were. I would order them again. My husbands black beans were very luke-warm. We sent them back (they came in a small bowl) and it took quite a while for a replacement. In the meantime I found my red beans (on the plate) were the same one-year temperature, but decided to eat them as-is. When the black beans arrived they were so overheated it took a while for the to cool down enough to be eaten. Both beans were rather bland. My husband liked the rice but I found it to be bland. The service was hit and miss. When the server came to our table to deliver the entrees, I picked up the plate the tamales had been on because our table was very small and there wasnt room for the entrees. The server put down our entrees and I was left awkwardly holding the plate, and instead of taking it he said, "Do you want me to take that?" I have no idea what he thought I might want to do with an empty appetizer plate - it was long and NOT small and there was absolutely no room for it. Our original wait person (a woman) came by twice to ask how we were doing, but disappeared towards the end of our meal, and we finally had to flag down someone in order to get the check. The restaurant is small, so I cant imagine that its difficult to see/ monitor your tables. There are a LOT of seafood entrees on the menu. The woman at the next table ordered the shrimp nachos, and they looked good. Its an entree-sized plate. My husband thought his pork chops were "o.k.", but not particularly tasty. One may not have a variety of enchiladas - the menu explicitly states all 3 enchiladas must be the same, "no exceptions". They serve alcoholic drinks, although we didnt order any. Many tables did, though, and the prices for drinks are reasonable for a restaurant. If the service had been better I might have given Don Juans 4 stars, but my overall experience, except for the enchiladas, was average. We may go back - there is a seafood rice dish we considered ordering, and I would definitely order the fish enchiladas again, but we will not be racing back because of the mediocre and rather random service. Altogether we had 3 wait staff come to our table. Not a particularly well organized staff experience.

Giving the establishment a 2 star rating because the food was good ::::BUT:::: the service was just about the worst Ive ever had anywhere. The only person manning the mom and pop shop was a young waitress with a ridiculous callousness and indifference towards the patrons but was ear to ear grinning like a jackass for the underage boys she was serving drinks to at the bar. She took forever to make my friends mojito and it got sent back because it was that terrible. To top off this pleasant experience... the place was infested with tiny horse flies that got worse when the food came out.... just great. Im giving it a 2 star rating instead of a 1 because my chicken enchilada was really good and my friend was equally pleased with her meal. But that is still no excuse for the disrespectful service to their customers. My opinion is stay away from this place.

We walked in a little after the door opened at 6pm. The food was okay, the atmosphere is good but the service was horrendous. Five of us at the table ordered appetizers while one ordered an entree. We thought that the food would be out in a normal timely fashion but we waited for our food for an hour and I am not exaggerating. One of the worst things was that the waiters and waitresses. They had no expression, not even a smile and they didnt even come to our table and say "Im sorry about the long wait the food will be out soon, would you like more chips or water?". We had to ask for chips and water...they should be paying a lot more attention to the tables and customers and long theyve been waiting.

Dont get out to West Orange very often but good thing I want here for a bday dinner. First off the location is small but really chill, the parking situation is a double parking thing where if you come first you may come back to find that your is blocked in. Second the food is AMAZEBALLS!!! The guac is to die for, i was literally eating by its self. Lol the shrimp appetizer was really seasoned an bursting with flavors. I ordered the stuffed pork chop, let me tell you that out was a Great piece of meat. I must say im really happy that i know of this place now. I had to save it on my Google maps to visit again.

Went for a quick dinner for the first time. Sadly it wasnt pleasant. My boyfriend and I really didnt like the expierence. The waitress was not nice or attentive. She told 20mins to get my drink. Them brought our food with no utensils until we called her. My food comes and my plantains were not cooked. Rest of the food was good. Then I was over charged for my non alcoholic piña colada and when I told the waitress she very angrily said "the price is the same for both" (in Spanish ). I hope next time the experience was better.

Mark my words. Don Juans restaurant is going to play a huge role in revitalizing the Valley downtown neighborhood of West Orange. Its a comfortable enough space, but you go for the food not the atmosphere if you get what I mean. Fresh. Delicious. Amazing. My favorite is the BBQ pork tacos. Its a BYOB and I have read they will mix up some pitchers for you if you bring your own tequila. New menu in the works too. Keep your eye on this place. Trust me.

We found this wonderful little joint when we were looking for a place for Friday evening dinner. It has a nice Latin feel with the relaxed attitude, noise and ambience. Its relatively small and loud so if you like quiet this is not a place for you. The host was nice and we had drinks (the margarita was great) while we were waiting for a table to open up. The food was also good and overall we had a Pleasent evening.

Its really nice to have a local spot like this. Overall the food is pretty good, the service is fine, and given its size has a nice selection of drinks. The decor is Latin American cozy with some bright and some subdued colors. Not sure how far out of my way I would travel to come here, but definitely worth a visit if in the area.
