A 14 year relationship ended on Valentine’s Day this year. My wife and I have made a tradition of dining at Marco Polo every Valentine’s for 14 straight years and enjoyed almost every trip. Some years the food and service were better than others, some dinner specials hitting the mark, most coming close. On a busy holiday, you could expect to wait a little past your reservation and enjoy a decent drink at the bar. However, the past few years we’ve seen a decline. I can’t say the décor has ever changed, and it’s becoming slightly dated. The service has slipped over the years – we went from having a well-seasoned wait staff to basically “kids” that appear to have little interest in working there. We always realized that this was not the fanciest Italian restaurant in NJ, we considered it to be above average, always reliable, good portions – an enjoyable night out. But, we can no longer say that. This year’s trip was perhaps our worst restaurant experience in a long time (and we dine out quite frequently). Our server greeted us with a growl and appeared flustered with how busy it was (the restaurant was half empty @ 7:30pm). After waiting 20 minutes to order a bottle of wine, our first two wine choices were “sold out”… (Note, one of the wines was listed as a “new selection”). The wine list there is OK, but this is not a place to order a $200.00 bottle of Quintessa. We ordered 2 appetizers, the balsamic calamari was good, but our clams casino (which was a special) looked like a child stuffed them. Their appearance was hard to describe and not very tasty. For entrées, we ordered two specials, a seafood fra-diavlo and stuffed flounder. Ten minutes after ordering the flounder, we were told it was sold out. We both went with the seafood special…it was “ok” at best. My comment to my spouse was the pasta underneath it was “al dente” perhaps the best thing I could mention. The bread on the table was warmed, but to be honest, it was stale. Before leaving the restaurant at 9pm, the table next to us was told the restaurant was out of bread and they were offered warm pitas. The other table next to us received glasses of champagne, on the house… we could not tell if this was part of the Valentine’s Day service but we did not receive any. Our dessert special was supposed to be red velvet cake but it also tasted stale and did not come with the vanilla ice cream as indicated on the menu. (First time I have spoken poorly about red velvet cake.) The server took a leisurely time when we were finished (starring at him) to get our final bill. He made a mistake in running our credit card and had to credit us back the first charge and charge us again. All and all, this is really what’s wrong with America… no one cares. Gordon Ramsey, where are you?? This is your next restaurant to save…

Charge more than the price on their menu and refused to refund Ordered shrimp scampi on lunch menu during lunch time, which lists as $14.95. Then I was charged $26 for this lunch dish. When I inquired about the reason, the girl who placed order said they charged dinner price for lunch on Sundays. There were total 6 shrimps in this dish, which is not even dinner portion at all. How could you charge dinner price and not even giving us dinner portion? And if you do have such policy, could you please mention it in the lunch menu? The funny thing is that I was told if I want lunch price during lunch time, I shall let them know when I placed my order. Hey, come on, I ordered lunch during lunch time, why should I tell you the lunch price should apply? I was told the owner will call me to discuss the issue. I am not surprised that they never called. What a joke. Never again.

Marco Polo is honestly a restaurant I dont think Ill ever return to. The selection was very large on the menu, and I had trouble picking what I wanted. As an appetizer we had the Fried Calamari. Ive never hated any calamari in my life until Marco Polo. The breading was not good whatsoever, and you could not eat more than 15 pieces without being sick of it. As my main course I got the manicotti. The cheese was terrible, the sauce tasted like ketchup, and the noodle shell was plain. The best part was the cannoli for dessert. The others with us also disliked their meals, so I would highly recommend skipping Marco Polo for your next dinner out.

As a long time customer, I was very displeased with the "upcharge" for the 3 stalks of sautéed broccoli with garlic side with your meal. I noticed the discrepancy after the waiter brought the check. It is not advertised on the menu and after informing the waiter and hostess of my displeasure, you would think as a courtesy it would have been removed. But it wasnt.

Casual restaurant that offers authentic Italian options (from fresh pastas to soups, steaks). I had the Shrimp fra Diablo (see photo). Spicy Italian plum tomato sauce, still chunky, finished with garlic, basil, and breaded shrimp. Meals are delicious but portions are large. Come hungry! PS: Love the plates decorated with a map of the old world.

One of the best... wit the best Italian restaurant ever. My family and I go their all the time and at many times give you gift cards for the holidays. We went there on Valentines Day and $50 gift cards for all. Also the most friendly waiters ever. You feel like your in Italian paradise.

great food, great wine list and most of all, service that is top notch. They have a large menu that will satisfy any craving. If you like calamari, order their Balsamic Calamari and you will be looking forward to your next visit before the you finish the meal.

First time Ive been there and was a good experience. Is more fancy that what I expected, the food is really good, not as in a regular pizza-italian-restaurant and the portions are very generous. Service was good too.

Been in Summit forever, was called Pedicinis before this. Full bar, two dining room areas. One well set for private parties. Decent Italian food, pizza is so so, but chicken parm, etc are fine.

Awesome, friendly staff. Waiter checks on the customers, very professional. Great food, and I enjoy coming every time. The decor is stunning with stained glass and chandaliers everywhere.

Ive been going to Marco Polo for years. It is hands down one of the best Italian restaurants in New Jersey. The food is excellent and the wait staff is very nice.
