I returned to dine at Matsu Japanese Restaurant in Hillsdale, NJ after a few years since moving away. I found the food to be fresh and delicious as I always remembered. The owner Alice Ko is welcoming and goes beyond expectations to make her dining guests satisfied with every aspect of their experience. The sushi is the freshest and highest quality. The smaller setting is comfortable and the menu offers variety and every dish is amazing. I had the Seafood Vegetable Soup and Mexican Rolls, which are made up of spicy tuna and avocado with just the right amount of kick. Highly recommend and will go back often.

There has only been ONE restaurant in northern New Jersey that had authentic japanese cuisine - Tomi of Tokyo in South Hackensack (theyre no longer there). Matsu has a decent amount of Japanese fare, but the waiters tend to forget things from your order. Their bento box meals are decent, but nothing to write home about. The sushi is very much average. This is one of the few places where Ive seen Toro actually availalble, though its not real Toro (more like chutoro). Bottom line - the food is "ok" though it is overpriced, and Im relatively certain these guys arent Japanese :)

The food was okay. I was surprised by the portions they served in comparison to the price I had to pay. It was very filling but the quality of the food itself wasnt very good. I ordered the beef teriyaki combo box but I was given the salmon one. The atmosphere is really nice though, it has wooden seats and tables to give it a Japanese cultural feel to it. Really cool.

My family has been eating at Matsu for many, MANY years now. The owner is delightful and the fish is always fresh, some of the freshest you can get around here in my opinion. We have tried many places, but always return to Matsu because we feel that the other places do not compare. You will not be disappointed.

The quality of their ingredients is best in the entire area. Their fish is the freshest. I know of no other place for the shrimp is so consistently fresh without any kind of chemical or chlorine taste. It is a great restaurant!

My wife and I would eat here every time we visited New Jersey. Now we live in NJ and we eat here with our kids almost every week. I have eaten Sushi all around the US and Marsh its hands down the best.
