We had not been to Cocina Del Sol for some time. To try them once again, we descended down the steps to their basement establishment. On a Thursday night it was fairly empty. We got to sit in the little alcove in the front, under the porch, which is an intimate place to eat (and usually difficult to get). The traditional bowl of chips was level, not overflowing. I didn’t mind this because I hate loading up on chips prior to eating my meal. The salsa was also on the small side but it was freshly made, tasted great and had a nice kick to it. We did not ask for more, so I can’t say if they would provide it or not. We started with a shredded chicken rice soup, which was very good. Our meals were very good - came with rice & beans. The portions were plenty, but I don’t think I’d describe them as huge. My wife wanted sour cream and they brought a good sized bowl, but also charged for it. The service was a little slow. I wouldn’t say inattentive, but they gave you a lot of time between the steps of the meal. For this particular night, it was fine for me and my wife as we had lots to talk about. If you are in a hurry, I guess you better tell them upfront. Overall, I liked it. The location has a cozy atmosphere you don’t get in a lot of restaurants. The food is very good and not over priced. I’ll live with slow service, especially when I have time. Another advantage is it is a BYOB.

One might think that a restaurant in a basement would be not be very inviting, however, the exact opposite is the case with Cocina Del Sol in Frenchtown, NJ. The restaurant is cozy, warm, and inviting with warm tones and natural light that filters in though glass panels in the floor of a shop above. The aroma coming from the kitchen is amazing and you instantly find yourself hungrier than when you came through the door, not to worry though, the food was outstanding and was on our table within fifteen minutes of being ordered. Not being a fan of guacamole, I was a little hesitant about the Texas Burrito, however, the combination of the ingredients won me over and I would definitely have it again. The Beef Fajitas were great, you get to build them yourself at the table. The beef was cooked as requested and was tender and juicy. The staff was friendly and very attentive checking on us several times as we enjoyed this delicious meal. The servings were ample and reasonably priced. A return trip to this restaurant will be in order for this food lover.

We had high hopes after reading reviews and we really wanted good mexican food. The salsa was good but chip refills will cost you and they wont tell you that ahead of time - they add 18% gratuity for parties of 5+ - if that note was on the menu...it wasnt in a place easily seen. The portions were not large like another reviewer indicated, in fact they were all child size plates. Both the portions and quality were average. We enjoyed exploring Frenchtown, but this restaurant was not the highlight of the town as we had hoped. If they decide to continue pricing their average quality food so high, they probably should compensate by providing a better quality atmosphere - being in a dark basement with cheap decor doesnt match with their pricing....or the quality.

Cocina Del Sol is a quaint, quiet, and very tasty authentic Mexican restaurant. It is a family favorite that we frequent and have never been disappointed. Free chips and salsa are always served, and they also offer authentic Mexican soft drinks in bottles as well. It is located in the basement of the building right next to the Cafe, and they offer a few tables of outdoor seating during the summer. BYOB. The burritos, enchiladas, and tacos are incredible, and the other plates are delicious as well. I often eat half of one of the burritos and take the rest home for a second meal later. On top of the great food, the servers and hosts have always been very attentive and timely. I highly recommend Cocina Del Sol to anyone who is a fan of authentic Mexican food.

We got seated in the back corner so our service was horrible. We had to beg someone for more salsa twice. When he finally came back with our food the order was wrong, fearing he would never return we ate the food. Now the food was very delicious. We got shrimp burritos with chips and salsa. Then when trying to check out we had to flag down another server and once he brought the check he charged us the wrong amount.

Worse place i ever been in. Came in with a few family members and the waiter could not get the order straight. To top all off they brought out some plate and forgot the rest., every body at the table was done by the time they notice that they forgot some of the food, dispite the fact that we had told them a few times. And at the end of the meal they still try to charge for the food we never gave us.

I was less than impressed..... Boring food served with a smile. The atmosphere was nice and the service was good. If you are expecting real Mexican food, and this is not the place to go. Beans and rice were served separately on a small saucer..... About a couple tablespoons of each. Beans were like soup and not a touch of flavor. Rice was plain and nondescript. Overpriced.

My wife and I dined here on 1/30/16. The restaurant is small and cozy and near the River Rd parking lot which makes it very convenient to frequent. The food was excellent, and the service was very attentive. A young woman waited on our table and even chased us down the street to bring us two bags we had forgotten. Bonus points for that. We will definitely return.

Stopped in for dinner last week and the food was great. There was NOTHING that disappointed. Ordered Chicken enchiladas, burrito and quesadillas. Everything tasted authentic and excellent. Staff was quick and attentive. I would absolutely eat here again and again and again. A little pricey but food was worth it. You definitely get what you pay for.

First the at the Cocina del Sol on a Thursday evening. Cute, clean set-up. tight seating. Delicious food. Moderate portions of very tasty food. Pricing is reasonable. Entrees for $11-$20. We go the combo platter and enjoyed the variety! And, yes, it is BYOB. We will certainly be back!

We go tubing in the river 2-3 times a summer. After a long day on the river we always make sure to stop at Cocina del sol for a great Mexican meal!! We live over an hour away but dinner here after 4-5 hrs on the river makes the trip worth it
