Let me first say that I fully support all of the small businesses opening at the Basement. It changes the way we experience downtown Reno, and I encourage everyone to visit. A few of the great things about Global’s location here: - the shop is conveniently located near community tables. - the aesthetic reflects a sophisticated roughness and old-world charm that makes the Basement such a unique place. - during the few times I’ve visited, the baristas have been very kind and worked as quickly as possible, even when there were people waiting. - the menu selection is more than adequate and features espresso and specialty drinks. Going forward, a few considerations for improving the experience at Global: - the coffee, while adequate, doesnt taste extremely good. If you like the over-roasted qualities of Starbucks, then you might like Global. If you’re looking for more of an artisan taste (like hub, blue whale, or old world), then you may leave Global feeling dirty. The espresso drinks I’ve had also need work, though I imagine (or hope) they’ll improve as the baristas refine their skills. - there is seating in Global’s area of the market, but it’s more beautiful than functional. If the coffee shop becomes popular, they might want to consider more efficient chairs and tables, which would increase the “coffee shop” feel. As is, the seating makes me feel as though I’m waiting at a fancy hair salon. All in all, Global Coffee is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. So far, however, they haven’t matched the level of quality that the other shops in the market have. Considering Global has a prominent place at the Basement, it’s my hope that they continue to strive to provide an experience that makes coming to the Basement memorable.
