Weve walked past this restaurant about 20 times, never bothering to stop. Its not usually packed, so we assumed the food was just ok. Boy were we wrong! This is by far the best restaurant weve tried so far in downtown historic St. Charles (and we eat out pretty much every night). The atmosphere is totally charming, the service was excellent, and the food was superb. The chicken cordon bleu was to DIE for, my husbands steak was perfectly tender and juicy, and my chicken valentine was amazing (lightly crispy with a lightly sweet sauce from apricots or a similar fruit). The side dish was rice with mushrooms, which even my kids were eating (and they HATE mushrooms). The owner, a very sweet elderly lady, came by our table with these amazing blueberry muffins and then sweet carrots. If you like great food, you will love this great little gem!!

The first time I walked in I did not know what to think simply because of the decor. But once I met Donna (The Owner) the experience got better. No where else in this area will you personally meet the owner who actually works, and knows what she is doing. The service was amazing! I had what the waiter suggested which was the Sole Orleans and a bottle of Honig Savingon Blanc. For my side I had the rice... It was the best meal I have ever had. Everything complimented everything. We sat on the patio and the cool breeze from the river on a warm summer night while listening to music like Frank and Tony Bennet. It was an amazing expeirence. My girlfriend loved the candle light dinner as well as the mild lights that are around the patio. I could not of asked for more! I will always 100% recomend this place. Also make sure you get dessert!

My roast beef sandwich was good. Thats the only reason I gave it 2 stars, rather than 1. The baked potato soup was the worst soup I have ever been served in a restaurant. My friend and I both ordered it. She asked that they replace her soup with the chicken noodle. It wasnt good either. (Had a really odd taste). The potato soup was thin and had a "grainy" texture. There were very little potaoes in the soup but there were potato SKINS that stuck to your tongue and rood of your mouth. I mean this soup was AWFUL. There was a waiter who was doing best to manage with the obvious disorganization of the place. We had to ask 3 times for crackers. I could go on and on, but this was at best a 2 star experience.

Loved it! Waited one second to be seated. Enjoyed the outside dining. It was delightful. Great food recommendation by the waitress. Great service. Excellent food. Met Donna and she was a delight. Ask her to tell you about her pies. I had the curry chicken salad, and tried her cherry cream and coconut cream pies. I just couldn't decide. I'd definitely come back here for a fun experience and delicious home made food. Besides I need to try her peach cobler. Ok we have another vote ... out of the two pies tried. Both delicious and fresh but coconut cream was a favorite for our first time visit. Perfect to tantilize the taste buds... Recommended by purplepilotgirl.

My title says it all! We did have one bad experience, however, and that was when we ordered fried chicken. We took one bite and discovered that it was still uncooked on the inside. The excuse given was that they were breaking in a new chef in the kitchen. We were offered alternative entrees which we reluctantly selected, but we had to wait all over again for our food to be cooked, and that took a long time. There was no compensation in the end -- no free dessert offered and no discount off our meals for our trouble. Despite this one bad experience, we have returned many times for their wonderful chicken curry salad and their luscious coconut cream pie!

The term "home-cooked" was taken a bit too literal here. The salad bar toppings looked like they were all out of a can: sliced beets? macaroni salad? cut-up green beans? I ordered the dinner special: pineapple brandy sole - the waiter initially told me it was a chicken dinner (so a bit surprised when I discovered it was fish!). And, it was served with CANNED pineapple on top - is this restaurant a joke? All of it was awful. No one in my party of 4 enjoyed their dish. We did not even ask what was available for dessert. I will not return and feel generous by giving it 1 star.

Good food, good service from Andy. Prices are fair. You get one small blueberry muffin with dinner. Do not ask for a second one because it will not be given to you. No other rolls or bread offered. The owner told me that she is a muffin Nazi and the cost of blueberrys is high so she will not give you more. I truly thought she was teasing, but was surprised to find that one is all you get even when asking nicely fir a second. Small salad bar with nothing more than lettuce and dressing to put on your salad. For an $85 dinner including tip, I will go elsewhere next time.

My wife and I had dinner with friends here tonight. The service was excellent and the food was delicious! Donna brought out some of her famous blueberry muffins which are out of this world! We sat on the veranda for a few hours chatting, and when they were closing up for the night, Joshua the kitchen head, brought us a pitcher of water and told us that we could stay as long as wed like, we could leave everything and that hed take care of it in the morning. We will be recommending this place to friends, and we will be back! 5 stars!

This beautiful historic home is a beautiful setting for a nice dinner! The salad bar are all dishes my grandmother use to make! AWESOME! The french onion soup was outstanding! The service was amazing and even the owner brought out warm corn muffins and sweet glazed carrots straight from the oven! It was like being at my grandmothers home all over again! The desserts... HEAVEN! Next time we will start with the pies and work in reverse! LOVE this place!!

I just had my bridal shower at Mother In Law House and it was absolutely wonderful! Donna was so accommodating and kind. The food was delicious, the waitress was excellent, and everyone had a blast! I will definitely be recommending my friends to the Mother In Law house in the future for their showers!! So special to have my shower in such a beautiful and historic place.

The service was amazing by everyone including the owner. Before our meal the owner brought by small out of the oven muffins, when we were served the owner kept going around with fresh out of the oven food for all the tables. I just love this cute little place. The chicken was soooo good!! Cant wait to go out there again.
