I cook Indian food at home from time to time, Ive eaten at different Indian restaurants in New York, Kansas City, and Denver, and Ive traveled in India. This restaurant will probably seem good to people who have no experience with the cuisine, but if youre looking for quality Indian food, I suggest going elsewhere in KC. I went for dinner and ordered mattar paneer (homemade cheese in tomato sauce with peas and spices). I love this dish, but not at Taj Palace. The peas were definitely from a can, the flavor of the sauce was pleasant but somewhat bland, and the paneer was definitely store-bought. (If youve had fresh paneer, like they do it in good restaurants and Indian households, youll never want the packaged stuff again). I ordered Chai; they definitely used milk powder instead of real milk, and skimped on the spices. The vegetable samosas were very bland, and mostly just mashed potatoes inside. The rice was ok, but Im not even sure it was basmati. I also ordered spinach naan, and they definitely used frozen (not fresh) spinach. The atmosphere was so-so. Nice music, very friendly service, reasonable prices, and good portions. But, I dont expect to go back.

So I drove 5 hours to Kansas City and saw this restaurant with the OPEN sign and entered around 8:45 PM on Thursday. I was greeted very very kindly by the college students working part-time there, and asked if the buffet was still going on. They kindly told me no, order only, which was perfectly fine with me.. Then the nightmare began; as I sat down at a table, a guy working there named Resham Singh stopped me and told me that they were closed, when the sign outside CLEARLY read OPEN, and the kind workers CLEARLY told me ordering was still going on. I told Resham Singh that I had driven 5 hours, but he didnt care, he said it wasnt his problem. I told him I was very hungry, and he finally agreed, but told me to quickly order. The food was average, and the student workers were exceptionally friendly, and I would have definitely visited again if it werent for the rudeness of Resham Singh. I felt very offended and outraged by his improper behavior, especially being a fellow Indian. Also, the parking was a nightmare, and the restroom was very unhygienic and dirty.

This is a great place for lunch. It has changed hands a few times, and reopened a couple years ago under "Taj Palace" with a terrific $7.99 lunch buffet 7 days a week. But their lunch price just recently went up to $9.95 per person - too expensive for me. Fine for an occasional treat, but now its just too much for a daily lunch spot. I grade them down only for 2 reasons - (1) the price, and (2) he tends to sneak MSG and "fillers" (i.e., corn starch) into some of the recipes. Most Indian restaurants do this, and its extremely annoying. I live just down the street (Roanoke), and wish these local restaurants would offer some sort of "locals" discount, or a special incentive program (especially the 39th St businesses). I really try to support the locally-owned businesses in my neighborhood, particularly those within walking distance. I would patronize these shops/restaurants every day IF they would get organized, and reach out to us "locals" with an incentive program, or in some way indicated that they appreciate their immediate community & local residents.

The food is pretty good, the price for the lunch buffett seems to change everytime I go there from 9 to 10 to 11 back to 9? The actual price is not listed on the menu or anywhere else so I guess it depends who you get at the register. For a lunch buffett where it's mostly a self serve deal you wouldn't expect bad service but our waters were never refilled, after being empty for some time a very un-friendly waiter dropped off a pitcher of water at our table (guess that was part of the self service) seldom cleared dirty plates and avoided eye contact at all costs....thought the waiter might be having a bad day but the other guy was only slightly more friendlier. Worth checking out if you don't mind an unwelcome enviornment and a gamble at the register.

Since we are unfamiliar to the area, we went to Taj Palace for Indian cuisine. We have generally enjoyed Indian cuisine in many locations. One of our very favorites is SIR, Standard Indian Restaurant, near Chicago. Another is Gandhi Mahal in Minneapolis. It was very disappointing that even though the place was nearly empty of customers, we were virtually ignored the whole of our visit. The food was unbelievably bland. My spouse ordered the curry chicken. I had the mango chicken. At least the garlic nan was served hot and tasted as it should. I would hope the wait staff would be trained in the art of taking care of the customers. I also hope that in the future the cook will be less stingy with the spices. Would not recommend.

The buffet is much worse in terms of quality compared to other area Indian restaurants. Ive been to every Indian restaurant in town and this is hands down the worst in almost every respect. The food is bland and tasteless, with little variety. The Tandoori chicken look like a mini version of the chicken you get at other places. They charge you for mango lassi and extra naan, meaning you pay more overall for less quality and quantity. The service is poor. You will notice very few Indians eating here and thats usually a sign that the food is not authentic. The nearby Korma Sutra and somewhat further south Tajmahal are better bets.

We visit Taj Palace every week or so! We been going every since we made a trip to India - we wanted to find local food that reminded us of our trip. The Taj is a simple place with helpful staff. Weve not tried the lunch buffet but enjoy dinner at Taj very much. Ive never had any complaints regarding the food, quantity or quality! We love the flavors and look forward to every visit. I have a team lunch planned for next week - with visitors from India; perhaps I will share what they think of the place! I would recommend the Taj to anyone that asked! Enjoy!

Best Indian food for dinner in the city, hands down. The Tandoori grill, the authentic Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Vindaloo (very spicy, very special) are all faves. Get the garlic naan and the onion bhaji. So many flavors that just make you feel happy, healthy and at peace. True comfort food. Side note: the owner is just a doll. I love him! He is super friendly and incrdibly hospitable. Try it out! P.S. Never tried Indian food before? Try the lunch buffet first to sample quite a few of the menu items. Enjoy!

I moved to KC recently and went to lunch buffet on a Friday. As it was okay and didnt had much energy to explore more restaurants, I visited this place again on next day for lunch buffet. To my surprise, I found the same food items that were served on the previous day. I asked the person there to confirm if those were not leftovers and he said those are freshly prepared. I trusted him and went ahead, ONLY to find that those were leftovers. I wouldnt suggest this restaurant to anybody.

I want so much to like this Indian restaurant on 39th street. Its close by and the staff is so incredibly friendly...but the food just doesnt hold up! We ordered the vegetarian dinner for 2. Both main dishes (korma and saag) were soooo salty they bordered on unedible. The saag paneer, which is usually one of my favorite dishes and a hard one to do wrong, tasted like it was made with canned spinach. Fresh ingredients and much less salt would go a long way in keeping customers!
