I stopped in here around 4 pm yesterday. I ordered beef broccoli and cream cheese wontons to go. This was my very first experience with this restaurant. When I walked in the door, I noticed that they had a buffet area, but it was taken down because lunch was over. When I placed my order, the lady stated it would take 10 to 15 minutes for my food to be ready. I told her I would be back in about 15 minutes because I wanted to look in the bookstore next door. I looked at the time (3:50) and left. I didnt find what I wanted at the bookstore, so I left, I was walking on the sidewalk and the lady came out the door with a bag and handed it to me; I was surprised because I just looked at my phone and it said 3:56. When I got home, I opened up the container and there was no broccoli at all, and I think I got beef with carrots, water chestnuts, leeks, and celery. There was absolutely NO sauce with the dish; I had to use the little packets of soy sauce to give the dish any flavor. I mixed the dish with the white rice and ate some of it. The cream cheese wantons were tough, it appeared as if they were old and thrown back in the deep fat fryer to warm them up. Basically, I think what I got was leftover buffet food and not fresh food. Ive been up since 4:00 am and I do not feel well. I would NOT recommend this place at all. I wouldnt give this place even 1 star, but the system forces you to give at least 1 star. Update: I did phone the restaurant to explain the issues. The lady who answered had no understanding of what I was saying, and kept asking for an order (obvious ESL issue). I stopped in to the store and they refunded my meal.

Grand Shanghai is the kind of place that you stumble in to when youre hungry and in the area. Its small and unassuming, at least until you walk inside. By the front door, there is a terrible smell reminiscent of death. I would not have stayed to eat if the smell was apparent throughout the restaurant, however, it is an unpleasant experience to have when you believe youre craving food. We ordered the mixed fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and steamed pork bao. The fried rice was great. There are few places where Id say the fried rice was better, honestly. The chicken was serviceable, tasty, but there was some thing wrong with the texture of the coating. The pork bao was also tasty. Id hardly call if famous, but Id doubt you would find much to compete with it locally. Overall the food is good, and as a delivery of take out joint, I could see some success, but the smell inside and the fact that the lemonade had a zep cleaning product aftertaste (of note, the water did not have the same issue) are detrimental to the experience; youll spend your time wondering what exactly that smell is.

The name is misleading, as the food is Cantonese style. We feel very positive that nearly everything we were served was just old microwaved food. Specifically, the chicken was totally dry, bland, and rubbery. The egg rolls were extremely dry. They completely forgot to give us our green onion pancake, and after we mentioned that, someone went into the kitchen and came back less than a minute later with predictably microwaved ones. The bean sprouts and napa cabbage in the soup were browning and absolutely not fresh. Some of the dishes that our food was served on were dirty and had dried food on them. While we were eating, all of the staff and maybe some of their friends sat and ate together at a table. They were the only other diners in the restaurant on the Sunday afternoon that we dined here... Many other restaurants in the area, including other Chinese ones, that are FAR, FAR better. We will never come back.

H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E! My husband and I bought a groupon. Placed a to go order on the phone, went to pick it up and (my mistake) the groupon say dine-in only. I apologized for my mistake, explained I honestly didnt even see that which was my own fault. she said if we wanted the food she would get us plates and wed have to sit at a table to eat. Unfortunately we did not have time to sit down to eat as we were headed out of town. I apologized again and asked if we could just pay for it so the food wouldnt be wasted and west be sure to read the small next time. She said absolutely not, they would be fined if they didnt follow the small print. And, she said, the food would not be wasted becuase shed just put the (20 minute old) on the buffet. Yuk. Needless to say we wont be returning.

Tonight my roommate and I got delivery and they said it would take 40 minutes to an hour. and it took two hours. when i called to say that I did not want to pay for it, the manager yelled at me and had a very rude tone, stating that it was the conditions of the road, even though i was out on the roads earlier and they are not bad. I called when my food was an hour and a half late then again a half an hour later. They manager was rude and nasty to me when i was only stating that it has been two hours. Also my house is just down the street from this place, so it should not take an extra hour to get to me. Even though the food is decent I am never going back to this place because of how rude the management was to me.

This is the place to go to find some of the best Chinese food made by a chef born and raised in Hong Kong. I recommend the chicken and black bean sauce pan fried noodle, otherwise try it with the FUN noodle, which are actually hand made noodles. If spicy is not your thing try Chicken and vegetables with noodles. They are known for having the best Pork Bao in the Midwest. It is a family run business that has been there for over 17 years. They use the freshest ingredients possible. This is the only Chinese place I can stand to eat at. The lunch buffet is the most valuable option, aside from the vast array of choices on the menu. You can try something new every time you go to Grand Shanghai!

Only a few things they do well here fried bean curd with mushrooms and chicken chow mien. Every time I have ordered the egg roll it is either over cooked(burnt) or under cooked. Last time I ordered delivery the driver forgot to bring any change she said she would go back to get changed but instead decided she deserved a $9 dollar tip instead and never heard back from her. If interested in trying stick to chicken chow mien, egg foo young (veg only), or fried bean curd(tofu) w/ mushrooms theses few items are very good everything else tends to be ok to terrible.

I have never been disappointed here. Food is freshly made when ordering from the menu. I tried the lunch buffet the other day and everything was fresh there too. Other Chinese buffets taste mass produced. Here at the Grand Shanghai, the buffet dishes taste like it was just ordered off the menu. There werent any desserts except for fried donut but there are 3 full islands of entrees and two soups. Hot and sour soup was very authentic. Dried fried fish was out of this world. Cant wait to go back.
