More of a diner restaurant atmosphere, but with coffee shop functionality. Brightly lit, open and roomy. You could sit with friends over coffee, have a nice healthy meal, or chill solo with a laptop and coffee for the day. The food seems really natural/healthy, and the bakery items are divine. They have the best chocolate eclairs! Staff is always friendly. You can get, well, butter to go. Lol. Bakery items by the box as well, and they sell a few small gift like things- mugs and bags of TeaSource loose leaf tea. Now for the unfortunate part. The Wi-Fi is horrible. The worst of anyplace ive been. They lose 2 stars for the terrible Wi-FI. It seems like they are filtering bandwidth for popular social media websites like Facebook, Instagram and the app store. Every time Ive been in here, not one picture will load on Facebook. Instagram wont load. Also the Apple App store wont load. Other less mainstream sites load okay (though still slow) Maybe they need a new router. I dont know, but even a search of my web based outlook inbox took timed out. (Its instant on my phone) Sending an email took 2 minutes. In a day when one can get free decent WiFi almost anywhere, its odd that the WiFi here sucks so bad. I want to chill here more often, but am seriously considering changing my go-to spot to somewhere where I can actually use my laptop. So basically, 5 stars for food and service, 0 stars for internet cafe usability. Ill round up and give em 3 stars.

This was the first and last time we will ever go here. We ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon, added two scrambled eggs, an order of the huevos burrito with sausage and two vanilla lattes. They must price their food by the minute because we waited damn near 25 minutes for that one order which came to $25. There were flies ALL over in the cafe!! They were in the pastry case flying around and landing on the scones, cupcakes and bars. The flies were on tables, in the windows, and in the kitchen. The kitchen was unsanitarlily dirty. Not to mention the food was riduliously awful! The burrito was OK but the biscuits and gravy were disgusting! However, the lattes were creamy, smooth and delicious! Me and my fiance each ordered a latte. Mine was brought to me, my fiance had to go back up to the counter to get his. He was the only black person in the cafe. I would have liked a pastry but had to pass due to watching the flies in the pastry case. NEVER gain will we visit this establishment. The complimentary eclair ticket I was given was handed to someone else outside because we wont be back.

While food and coffee are quite good, I was appalled by my Memorial days experience. A bartender (an ever smiling fellow who looks at others but never sees them), who was making coffees at the side counter, was extremely rude. After waiting for at least 15 minutes for a single cup of regular coffee I went to get a glass of water only to discover that the water container is empty. I tried to inform the bartender about it, but his reply was "Would you go in line". I told him that it is about the water container. He replied that "Yes, I know". No apologies, not even an indication that he is going to do anything about it or ask somebody else to do it. Then I asked a girl at the checkout and she refilled the water tank in 10 seconds. I think that if this guy is so over-stressed by his job that he cannot be civil to his customers, he should find a position in some quiet dive selling Pabst Blue Ribbon and pretzels, not coffee. Also, it would be nice if the management pays more attention to the numbers of clients on a busy holidays and weekends.

Frankly, Im astounded by the bad reviews I see here. I stop by Butter, on average, twice a week, and I often have breakfast or lunch there. The coffee/espresso drinks are great, and the food is amazing. Ive probably had 50 meals there, and Ive never, ever had a bad one, nor have I ever found a hair in one. My kids love the french toast, and I love the 2 eggs with veggie side and the lunch salads and soups. The pastries are out of this world, and words fail to describe how delicious the peanut butter bars are. Its also the greenest coffee shop Ive ever been to -- the to-go cups and whatnot are biodegradable, and the produce is as local and organic as you can get in the Twin Cities. Finally, the staff are all perfectly friendly.

I cant believe people and their bad reviews. I am have never received anything less than great service. Once I had to wait awhile for my food, hmm, who knew that a great cafe would be busy on a weekend morning in the city? No the place is not a huge or huge fly trap. You will not have flies crawling on your face. I am a person who has pigment in my skin, never get a second look or bad service because I am not white. Butter also catered a couple events I have attended and the food was delicious. I will continue to support this business because I think they are really good for the community. Do some research and try the éclairs!

I absolutely love this local cafe. All the foods are made from scratch from local farms & sources. They have a homemade breakfast buiscut to die for. The butter buiscut is fluffy & always fresh, comes with egg, avocado, sprouts, tomato & garlic spread if you like. Delicious bakery, just tried their Rhubarb cheesecake & great coffee too....ALL Yum! Very affordable. Great bright atmosphere with wood plank tables and a little nook for kids. Sunny outdoor seating available too, when weather permits. Very welcoming and always accomidating service. One of my fave places for brunch...

Coffee is great here and they offer free refills! Espresso drinks are great as well. Bakery items are pretty good and the eclairs are a local favorite. I love the carrot cake sandwich cookies too! Youre best bet for food is the biscuit sandwich. Unfortunately, I find a lot of the other food on the menu to be a bit bland. However, Im not a MN native... People here tend to like bland food (-; Service is usually pretty good, you may have to wait a bit for your food if theyre really busy. Definitely worth a visit though if youre in the neighborhood though!

Butter is great for a neighborhood cafe. It has a low-key atmosphere and the staff are friendly. The red velvet cupcakes are soo rich (in a good, once a month kind of way) and the frosting has the most amazing texture, almost like you can taste the sugar crystals... Ok Im having a craving now, got to go soon. Having said that, I think the sweets seem overpriced- shouldnt the little frosted shortbread cookies be 75 cents, instead of $1.50? But maybe it costs that much to make them? Either way, good place to stop for a coffee and bite.

I was quite surprised to read the negative review from 9/1/09. My husband, daughter, and I frequent Butter. The scones are delicious and the coffee is very good. Weve been happy with hot food weve ordered, too! It has a comfy, local feel and the people (workers and customers) are quite nice. I also appreciate their commitment to the environment (composting, discounts for bringing your own mug, etc). If I had to think of a way for them to improve, its that their coffee tops sometimes leak. Visit Butter and enjoy!
