Ok food. Ok atmosphere. Ok service. They need a bar. As a regular customer of the former King located in downtown Minneapolis I feel obligated to mention to those seeking the same experience...while its menu is similar, its logo the same, this is NOT the same King. The food, while still good, has been adapted for suburban pallettes. The menu has been pared down to only the basic Thai dishes, and isnt as flavorful, spicy, or wonderful as it used to be. Theres nothing special or remarkable on this menu or in this restaurant. The ambiance is also distinctly suburban, dare I say geriatric? Painted with anemic colors, frosted glass, and way too bright lighting - they even have windows! Its just a little too quiet and its got awkwardness to spare. Gone are the dark corner tables lit by candle light, awesome music and live djs, lanterns hanging from the ceiling, paper cocktail napkins with witty doodles. And none of those exotic elixirs and hipster beers waiting for order at a well worn bar staffed with experienced professional servers that can handle seven full tables and bartenders that know a great drink and will laugh you out of the bar got ordering a Cosmo. This Kings got no romance no attitude. Sanitized of all the stuff that made it an ultra cool urban eatery, unfortunately this King is only a pale shadow of its former self and it just leaves me sad and missing another time and place. Ive waited to write this review for quite a while hoping that maybe they just needed time to get back on their feet. Unfortunately it seems like time has only brought this restaurant more in line with the mundane; offering even more typical food and flavor, a smaller menu and all delivered with even less flair than ever.

Lookng for a nice Thai experience and had been to King and I several years ago. Two of us dined there, spend more than $ 100 on a salty meal, service - so-so until the end. Waitress gave 3rd glass of wine after meal was paid, said it was on house, paid bill - tipped 20 percent, then proceeded to walk out to pick up valet car, once getting car, waitress runs out like we are trying to walk off without paying (1 glass 8 dollars), I said just put it on tab if needed, no thank you, no nothing, spoke to owner and explained - he acted like he didnt even care. Business must be good in these hard times to show little concern or appreciation. Everyone - spend your money somewhere else, other restaturants are out there that certainly have more hospitality.

Went here tonight with the whole family after reading the reviews. We started with Satay which served on five scewers. Then we had Pineapple Fried Rice (good), Roasted Hot Pepper Sauce (outstanding) and Gaeng Puk with Chicken (very spicy and good). Had Mai Tai cocktails. Dishes are served family style and come in unusually large portions. Every dish is good for two.... Overall lovely little restaurant. Prompt and service minded. Great food end drinks. Pricey main dishes (most cost $17+ except fried rice/noodles which run around $11+) but thats compensated by the size.

I ordered the Pad Thai with Tofu for take out and it was the blandest Pad Thai I have ever tasted. Ive eaten at LOTS of Thai restaurants and had Pad Thai that was eons better than this. It was dry, tasteless, like sticky as if there were nothing else in it; horrible. This was my first try with their food, but sadly, I feel pretty hesitant to go back. Im wondering if the folks who say its good have actually had REALLY GOOD THAI FOOD?!?!? I just dont think Ill go back; cannot afford to waste my money when I know places that are do much better.

The young lady who answers the phone Is rude. The old King and I had many Gf menu options. Pad Thai being one of them. True authentic pad Thai is gluten free. I was so excited that they moved to mendota but when I ordered Gluten Free pad Thai to go and got home there was no sauce. Plain rice noodles with bean sprouts and nuts. I called tonight to check if it was a glitch and she said no thats how they prepare it. If you are Gluten Free drive 5 miles further and go to Supatras where most of their items on the menu are Gf including, pad Thai.

I was hesitant to give this place one star but since zero wasnt available it gets one. The food isnt exciting and if your looking for traditional Thai this isnt the establishment you want. Also, the service I received was terrible, the waiter was uninterested in how our meals were and never offered to exchange or credit our bill for bad tasting food. Only later was my wife able to get a bill credit after talking with a manager over the phone. Overall the experience was bad, the food was overpriced and not traditional.

Service was very slow tonight. It took nealy an hour for our food to come out. My wife ordered her dish mild and I ordered mine hot and either the waitress or the kitchen got them mixed up. My dish came out bland and mild and my wifes dish was way too spicy for her to eat. When we told the waitress, she apologized and said that there was nothing she could do. Very poor service. We went here thinking that this was somehow connected to the King and I Thai in Minneapolis, but it doesnt appear to be.

Downtown Minneapolis prices in Mendota Heights. I had the Pad Thai it was good. The flavor was ok a bit sweet. The decor is plain but not classy. The service is a bit sloppy (The hostest asked me "Is their something I needed?" as a greeting, while counting money, all over the front desk.) They have no lunch specials and are very unapologetic about it. I posted a photo of my $13.95 meal.

Dont listen to the people on here reviewing it badly for either poor food or service. I have been here a dozen or so times and have always found the service at least satisfactory. The food and drinks are excellent; the portions of the food, btw, are huge, enough usually for two meals. The ambiance is great, and its open late. My favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities.

Never been here before, loved the food and service. Rochelle was our waitress and was familiar with the menu. The food came out hot and was excellent. My wife had Pad Thai and I had Holy Basil Beef entree. We would definitely visit again and recommend to anyone. Portions are big and prices reasonable although the appetizer, King Egg Roll, was tasty but not worth $9.

Best egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken I have ever had! The bar is a great area for dinner. The food was just amazing and the service was good too. Our waiter looked like Napolean Dynomites brother, but he luckily wasnt anything like him. Very helpful. I will definitely be going back and recommending King & I Thai to all of my friends and family

It was okay. I expected better with all the hype about how great this place was in its old location. I felt the entrees were over priced at $16, there was very little meat in the stir-fry and pad thai, and only served high-end craft beer at $6. Flavor was fine, nothing fantastic. Service was okay too.
