So... Ive never felt strongly enough to write a negative review until now!!! My friends & I decided to venture out of our neck of the woods and try somewhere new this past Saturday night. By doing this we couldnt have chosen a worse restaurant if we had tried! I ordered a Sangria and when I went to take a sip out of my straw I quickly noticed there was a piece of hair stuck inside. For obvious reasons I was totally disgusted. I removed an extremely long, black piece of hair from my straw. Right away, I flagged our waitress over to our table. Rightfully so, I was very upset! I told/showed her the long, black piece of hair that I was forced to hold with my fingers. She said let me get my manager. After an unacceptable amount of time waiting, to the point that my finger tips were turning white from pinching the piece of hair between my fingers. I hear ya... totally gross right?! Anyways, finally the manager came to our table. She takes the piece of hair from me and starts wrapping it around her finger, while listening to my frustration. YES!!! The manager of MAIZ restaurant continuously wrapped a piece of hair, found in my drink, around her finger! I explained to her that we would not be paying and listed a number of reasons as to why. She said let me get my manager. Hmmm... I thought she was the manager? Eventually, Jason showed up to our table. Manager no. Owner yes. I must say Jason came with quite a defensive attitude right out of the gate. Very surprising, since HE is the owner. Instead of being apologetic and accommodating to his customer like one would expect. NOPE!!! He tried to justify the hair in my drink and question my character. UNBELIEVABLE!!! When I proceeded to tell him I was not paying, he took his phone out of his pocket and said let me call the owner. Wait!!! You are the owner. Minutes later Jason approaches our table offering us a free dessert or drink. REALLY?! I, of course and rightfully so said no. Would he or anyone in their right mind want or feel like eating or drinking anything else at that point? The hair was bad enough, but the manager wrapping it around her finger put me over the edge. Now, for the icing on the cake, Jason, the owner, not the manager calling the owner, was really calling the police. YES!!! He called the police because his customer found a long, black piece of hair in her drink and didnt want to pay. Our entire table was in a state of shock to say the least. Even more shocked that with an owner like Jason, MAIZ has stayed in business. In all my life, in all my travels to restaurants located near, far around the world etc... have I ever experienced anything or anyone like MAIZ and Jason. I highly recommend you stay as far away as possible from MAIZ and Jason. There are so many wonderful dinning options available in our area. I feel confident as long as you stay away from MAIZ and Jason you will have made an excellent choice. I would like to apologize to the two officers whom Jason called for such a ridiculous reason. I would also like to apologize to Ypsilanti residents who may have truly needed the police at that time for their safety and or health and because of Jason they were not available right away. Thank you for your time:) I WANT IT NOTED I GIVE MAIZ AND JASON 0 STARS, BUT I CANT POST WITH 0;(

Owner charges for complimentary chips & salsa but the water is free? First off, Ive been here plenty times. A couple times Ive only drunk a beer or Margarita. But each time Ive gone, its been 4 or more of us. Tuesday is Bike Night. We had 7 people in our group, only two in the group did not order food. When the bill came the waitress gives the two people that did not eat a bill for $2.12 each for the complimentary chips & salsa. The manager was called over but actually was the owner. He explains that people that did not eat WERE NOT CUSTOMERS. And that the complimentary chips & salsa was only for paying customers. WTF? Then he goes on to say "I spend $4,000 a day on chips & salsa. This was after our group mentioned word of mouth about his business practices. It was unfortunate that a few people in our group come down to "Depot Town" for the first time, so their experience was terrible (even though they ate). Business owners have the right to run their establishment any way they see fit, but Ive never gone into Logans and paid for the complimentary peanuts or Red Lobster and pay for the complimentary biscuits. The food here is not bad, but it is NOT authentic as Los Amigos on Michigan Ave. But the main complaint is for the owners lack of customer service. We could not believe how augmentative and combative the owner was instead of working with the customers. If you want to charge people to sit at a table, simply inform them ahead of time. We probably all would of got up and walked across or down the street but thats better than trying to charge for complimentary food. Like the other five people were not eating the chips and salsa.

8/11/17: 11:45 am Seems to be sliding downhill. Was 5 stars. Bartender more focused, and aggressively so, on her bar prep than taking care of customer. Got salsa with a piece of plastic in it, i saved it, going to have it looked at. Just for fun... Pozole: good smoke, albeit lean, mostly broth. The tostada sampler: I love the avocado taco, this tostada, not so much. Too much acid and the avocado was "meh". The carnitas, neither bad nor great, again, "meh". The tingas provided a great blend of spice and flavor and was juicy. Would order that again. I will rescind my recommendation to friends and family. Again, has gone downhill fast. Pre 8/11/17: Love the food! I can wait until they open the patio. Margaritas are wonderful.

Maiz has excellent vegetarian options and plenty of space. Went there late on a Saturday evening and didnt have any issue finding a table. The ambiance is good but the food was better. My friends and I are vegetarians and ordered a good variety of food - Bakes Avocados, Sweet Potato cakes, fried avocado taco and two different types of grande quesadilla (spinach-mushroom, bean-corn). The sweet potato cakes tasted very different and very good while the bakes avocados are half avocados with cheese and toppings on top. Definitely try the fried avocado taco with chipotle cream sauce. The quesadillas are one of the best weve had with plenty of stuff (for vegetarians), other then just beans and cheese thats available in other places.

I come here on Taco Tuesdays during happy hour for a few tacos and margarita. This place is a decent option if youre on a budget. During warm weather, there are seats outside in front and back. Its usually always busy and loud, so this could be a sensory nightmare for some folks if there are no outdoor seating options. I rate it for star for this reason. Im not sure how this impacts accessibility and if there are systems in place to ensure everyone has the opportunity to come here. However, the staff is generally kind and patient even under high stress. My favorite part about this place is the vegetarian options. Be wary of over eating chips-- this has made me sick in the past.
