Let me start by saying I was born and raised in Mexico. Mexico City to be more specific. Now, I am fully aware that my expectations for authentic Mexican food ought not to be the same as if I were in Mexico, With that being said. we went to this restaurant as a spur of the moment thrill because of a coupon. I have driven past this place a couple of times so we figured, why not? Upon arriving the parking lot it seemed like this would be good. The lot was busy for a sunday evening. The restaurant was full and the hostess was nice. We sat down.I usually order in Spanish, she clearly did not speak Spanish (all staff were white and blonde) so I let that slide. I asked if they had any flavored water (horchata, tamarindo, jamaica, strawberry, you know the usual) She seemed confused and the ran me a list of fruit2o flavored waters.I quickly dismissed that notion and ordered a cherry pepsi. As soon as I opened the menu I knew it would be a bad restaurant. The dish names are misspelled. IE: Milanese instead of Milanesa, chili instead of chile, choris instead of chorizo. The menu had some God awful combinations as rice topped with Chili. As soon as I saw that I told my husband my expectations had lowered to the bare minimum so I was not going to even attempt authentic dishes, to avoid getting angry. I ordered the nachos. My husband ordered the steak milanese. Who can mess that up I asked myself? This place. The nachos were DISGUSTING. it was supposed to have chorizo, that was ground beef not chorizo. The chips were hard as a rock and it was smothered in cheese. Real Milanesa is thinly sliced chicken or steak, breaded and deep fried or baked until golden. It is usually served with a small side salad some refried beans and rice. My husbands dish was not that: It was a salisbury look a like breaded patty smothered in cheese with dry looking rice and the beans looked like they had been sitting in a pot for months. We said nothing, clearly these people have no clue how awful their food is. It is true what they say if you see people from that culture in a restaurant you know it will be authentic food. We should have walked away. How have they managed to stay in business for sixty years? It is a MYSTERY Never again!

After having spent years in Santa Fee, San Antonio and Denver, I pretty much know what good Mexican food consists of and tasts like. Whether you like Tex-Mex (San Antonio), or South Western fare (Denver), or the Meca of Mexican Food in the USA (Santa Fee, NM), you know youll never find that in Detroit. To my recollection, the old Mexiican Villiage (on Bagley) in Detroit was for many years my total experiance with Mexican food. After 30 plus years out west, I must admit that even the Mexican Villiage was ot true Mexican food. While the Matador was packed with customers the evening I returned there, I again found the food to be a total failure as Mexican food. I should have known better than ordering the Mexican Sandwich. This sandwich was a favorit of my father since the 1950s at Mexican Villiage. Perhaps that is why I ordered it from the Matodor. What a mistake. It reminded me more of Shepards Pie (a British dish of dubious value). I did like the hot sauce. It was a big improvement ofer the competition in the area. But, Im sorry (very sorry) to say that Im still looking for a credible Mexican place in western Wayne County. If you must go the the Matadore, dont eat for at least three days prioir to your visit. That way, you may think its good food. I did want to mention that the wait staff is quite good, but the food really needs work. Who EVER heard of parmesan cheese on Mexican Food. If you tried that any where folks know about Mexican food, youd be laughed out to the street. Too sad. Gary B Denver, CO

Im a woman. I went to Matador Restaurant yesterday afternoon. I was by myself, and craving some of the wonderful food that I had grown up eating there. We used to take bottles to Halls Party store, right next door, and go to the Matador window and order tacos to go. I was told, "just one, oh okay, seat yourself, Ill be right with you." I went to the back of the restaurant, as I was reading a book and wanted to be away from conversations, and was anxiously awaiting some hot chips and salsa, followed by the combination dinner. Two men walked in about 5 minutes after me, they were told by the same waitress to seat thereselves and she would be right with them. Five minutes later, she goes to the table with the two men, bringing them chips and salsa and waters. They are only two table in front of me. I say, "excuse me", could I get, and she walks away. She never acknowledged that I was there, so I got up and left the Matador for the very last time. Its too bad that someone who grew up on Hampden Street, 2 blocks away, that also helped the Matador expand over the years introducing may people to their wonderful service and good food, taking clients in for lunches, etc.., was treated in such a discriminating way. So sad. Is there a way to give this a negative rating.

The wait staff was doing their best but you cant fix terrible food. "Authentic Mexican" is a total farce. The cheese dip was tasteless store bought generic nacho cheese microwaved to the point that the film over the cheese was scorched. The beef in the quasadilla was a mediocre home cooked version of taco meet with grease from the hamburger meat all over the plate. To summarize, microwaved cheese and greasy taco hamberger meat on a white tortilla took 50 minutes to prepare with only 5 tables occupied. The chips and salsa was pretty good but thats as far as it went. Im sorry to give a bad review as I dont typically leave a review anywhere good or bad but this was absolutely disgraceful to the term "Authentic Mexican Cuisine". Thank you to the waitress for trying to make it right and dealing with a horrific cook.

Went with a party of 10. There was one waitress on a Friday during the lunch rush hour. The manager was not there to help. After waiting a half an hour for our drinks, the cashier dropped the pop on 2 people from our party. They brought us our bills since we had to leave and we hadnt even seen our food. Our meal came as we walked to the cashier. Keep in mind We had already been there an hour. We asked for compensation. It wasnt even offered. Then they only wanted to give us 10% off our bill. We were told to call back and the manager "Ray" would do more for us since he wasnt there to rectify the situation. A few of us walked out and left the food and didnt pay. One of the members from our party who did pay didnt even get her meal made. That was HORRIBLE service and horrible customer service!!!!!!

Went to Matadors for dinner last night with my family. The restaurant was not that busy. After patiently waiting a half hour for our nacho and two tacos, we noticed that three other customers that had came in after us were getting their food. I asked our waitress if our order had gotten lost and pointed out that other diners were being served before we were. Our waitress explained that our order will be out shortly. WELL IT NEVER CAME..... After seeing the third customer get their food before us, we got up and told our waitress that we were leaving. All she said was "sorry"..... No, let me check on your order......No, let me see if I can speed things up back there..... No, is there anything I can do to get you to stay.......... Sorry Margaret and Ray, but thats just poor service........
