We arrived at Pumpernickels with a large group shortly after lunch rush. The staff behind the counter refused to take our order until we found a place for everyone to sit (BTW- It is against Pumpernickels rules to push tables together). I informed the counter person (who I believe is the proprieter) that we were in a hurry, and if we werent able to find seats, some of us would take it to go. We were then told youre holding up my line. Bear in mind this exchange took a total of about 60 seconds. We finally ordered, and we all found tables spread out around the restaurant. Our sandwiches (turkey of two different varieties) and they were just meh. The meat was fine, but the bread was literally falling apart. I realize Pumpernickels is not fine dining by any means, but do yourselves a favor and skip this joint.. I understand the clientele is primarily seasonal, so it doesnt matter how you treat your customers, but whats right is right. There are plenty of other places in Saugatuck with friendlier staff and much better food, even for a quick lunch.

Was drawn to place by description and look from outside. Will start w positives-it has a nice location and interior. My wife enjoyed her Danish and my daughter appeared to enjoy her pancake. The positives end there. Coffee was horrible, something I dont understand for a bakery/morning spot. The order style is off. Its marketed like a restaurant but is basically operated like a short order cafe. While walking back to a table my mother (70s) spilled coffee on her pants because you have to serve and walk yourself with a small coffee cup. Table service (outside) was non existent. Food may have been good but we left after the above experience. Still trying to figure out how there are not more breakfast spots in this busy tourist town.

Within an hour of eating biscuits and gravy I was racing through town in a desperate attempt to locate the nearest bathroom; sadly, a trip I made four more times over the next 3 hours. My wife ordered quiche and while she did not become ill it’s likely because she was wise enough not to eat dried out quiche based on the odd smelling fruit sampling which accompanied her meal. The next day we strike up a casual conversation with a local couple and I mention my breakfast experience and he says “Yep, we don’t eat there for the same reason”! Wish I could rate it negative stars!!!

Cute little restaurant but the food was terrible. I had the huevos rancheros which was nothing but a egg burrito with a little bit of cheese. You literally could get the same thing at Burger King for $1. It should be called an egg burrito and not huevos rancheros on the menu even if it spells out the ingredients. We felt rushed because you walk to the front and we had a line behind us so ordered quickly. My wife had a egg white veggie omelet which was swimming in oil. All and all this was the only meal we had on our trip that was extremely disappointing.

Had breakfast here the other day and must say the food we got was very disappointing. Worst was the huevos rancheros which when it came to the table is actually a poorly made breakfast burrito. I suggest the owners take it off the menu because it is false advertising in every way - it would be like ordering a steak and being served a pork chop.

A great place to start your day. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the friendly waitstaff. The orders are taken quickly. Ask for Gluten Free items, including delicious French Toast. We sat upstairs, outside, on a beautiful Sunday morning. The fruit salad and yogurt were a great touch. The juices are bottled, and the coffee is refillable. Enjoy!

Quick, tasty sandwiches/wraps for lunch, many on house-made bread. Best part was live music, guy singing folksie oldies and playing his guitar, but we could still hear each other as we conversed in the side room, that felt like a covered porch. It was a relaxing break from the cool temps and the crowds. Outside seating was available, too.

The staff were very helpful and attentive. We were there for lunch and the meal was pretty good, not awesome, but tasty enough. On the other hand, the bakery items were wonderful tasting. Another nice thing was that they had a guy playing a guitar and singing. It all made for a rather pleasant lunch. Worth the stop.

I had the Denver Ham omelet. It was OK. Nothing to "wow" about. And while I would normally prefer toast and home fries...I tried it "as is" with the muffin and potato casserole. The muffin was delicious but small. The potatoes had great flavor but the consistency/texture was off. Loose and somewhat "liquidy".

Very small, intimate cafe. Seemed very clean. Staff very nice. I had a bacon cheese burger on sourdough. It was delish. Cooked perfectly. My daughter had a feta cheese burger. She claimed it was the best burger she ever had. I seen they also had a nice selection of wine, but didnt try any.

The breakfast specials are very tasty, and a great deal. Best deal in the place, though, has to be their day-old basket next to the door. 6 huge cookies for a buck? Three monster cinnamon rolls for a buck? Two pastries and a donut for a buck? Deals dont get much better than that.

Really great home-made comfort food. The cooks nailed the poached eggs on my Benedict. The coffee leaves a little something to be wanted... Like, a little more coffee and less water. Would come back for a quick simple breakfast.

Whenever I visit the Saugatuck-Douglas area, a stop at Pumpernickels is required. The potato casserole is worth it alone, but live music and friendly staff (and very excellent food) make it worthwhile.

Order & pay at counter, sit at a empty table, wave at server calling your name as they bring out your hot food from the kitchen.

Food was good and reasonably priced, but we had to wait 40 minutes to get it at 2pm on a Saturday and the place was not packed.

Good breakfast food and sandwiches, and the bread is good too, which is important for a place with this name.
