I cant believe this place is still in business. I live nearby and I drop in every once in a while, but Im always surprised by what I see. The bread and pastries are okay, I guess. I once asked one of the bakers if they used frozen puff pastry and she timidly replied, "Well, yes." Like she was afraid the management would be upset if she told the customer what they were actually consuming. I can understand that because Ive been in on multiple occasions to see the owner, Joe, yelling and screaming at his employees. Not the way to run a business in my opinion! They recently made some changes to the front of the store, but the back doesnt look like it has been cleaned in a very long time. Its so dirty, Im surprised no one has fallen ill! In fact, I heard that they were using regular old tap water during the Boil Water Advisory in Livonia. And on multiple occasions I have seen one of the male bakers cough and sneeze while he shaped the bread. I have also seen fruit flies flying around the bread and pastries- there must be a ton if theyve made it to the counter! I guess the only good bakery in Livonia is Cantoros!

Actual Information
While I once loved Art of Bread, they have come to a close and shut their doors. If youve been there recently, you know this is because of "oven maintenance". However, this is completely incorrect, the actual reason theyre closed is because the owner, Joe (of Joes Produce), treats his employees poorly and tried to hire and replace new bakers behind the bakers back. When they found out about this, all three head bakers quit. Now you know the truth as to why Art of Bread is closed, and you know that Joe is a liar and treats his employees unfairly. Ive talked to several other employees at Joes Produce, and the meat and seafood store nearby. Theyve all said working here is a nightmare. Change your business practices Joe and treat your employees better. Then, maybe, I will shop at your stores again.

As far as bakeries go, you can find better pretty much anywhere else. Most of the items are not made from scratch. They claim that their pies are made in house, when in fact Ive seen them taking frozen pies out of boxes right behind the counter, in plain view of myself and other customers. You can see into the kitchen from the counter and it looks very dirty and poorly maintained. They often run out of pastries very early in the day, and the counter staff seems disinterested and unapologetic at best. The entire operation seems poorly designed and run. Perhaps the owner should head back to business school and take a few more lessons.

So many goodies in such a cute space! I love Art of Bread. I stopped there during the Grand Opening to get some last minute items for Christmas and had such a pleasant experience. I Absolutely love their French Roast Coffee (and so did the rest of my office!) and the Asiago bread was a wonderful addition to our meal. If youre looking for a quality bakery that features authentic Italian breads, cookies and sandwiches (in addition to a number of other options) look no further!
