Went to Mangiamo for the Restaurant week. I had made a reservation for a weeknight dinner, but once I saw the occupancy rate I think that a reservation was unnecessary. I had the set menu (roasted fingerling potatoes for appetizer, grilled sea scallops for the main, mimosa cake for dessert, pomegranate mojito for drinks), & my OH ordered ala carte (artichoke balls for appetizer, butternut squash soup, trotter steak for main). I noticed the tables around had bread and ours didnt. Not sure if bread was supposed to be served or the other tables had ordered them from the menu. My fingerling potatoes was the perfect portion & I really liked the baby arugula. I did not taste the gorgonzola dulce verde dressing at all. The dish was pretty dry. Im guessing they forgot to put the dressing? The artichoke balls were average. Good portion; us 2 couldnt finish the entire dish. Hardly tasted the artichoke, mostly tasted like mush. I liked the crispiness of the outside & the marinara sauce though. The butternut squash soup was good, came in a cup size. I really enjoyed my sea scallop because it was a party in my mouth & the size was good. It was grilled nicely, but it still melted in my mouth. The flavours mostly came from the oranges & the Grey Goose orange glaze. The roasted fennel risotto tasted a bit off & hardly ate any of it; it was dry and lacking in salt & pepper. My OH ordered the trotter steak in medium. The serving size was good; it came with jicamas and mashed potatoes. When served, the steak was cooked to the right temperature, except that it was very bland and chewy. We didnt like the trotter steak at all. For the dessert, it literally tasted like angel food cake served with fruit compotes & whipped cream. The whipped cream didnt taste fresh and the cake wasnt as airy as I though itd be. The compotes were too sour for my taste. The pomegranate mojito was good & strong, but couldve been a little bit sweeter. Ambiance: dim lighting was not too dark, but I felt that the checkered red-white tablecloths clashed with the classic decor. This place is pretty spacious, but broken into separate rooms because of the walls, which made the place felt more intimate. For the 2 of us, we spent $60, which isnt bad considering we each had a 3-course meal. Overall, Id come & visit again, but would like to try their pizzas next time.

5/25/16 There were only 3 reservation listings left for the entire night when I booked it around noon. I took the 2:45 expecting the place to be packed. the mgr called me and said dinner service did not begin until 4 though. so I said then we would have a drink and wait. when we got there the place was completely EMPTY. we had a drink and the server waited until 4 to put the order in. At 4 when dinner service was STARTING the place was still EMPTY? So why couldnt we just get a 4pm reservation? Then the food came at around 430. My $20 fettuccini and clams was a joke. It was a tiny appetizer size portion of fettuccini clumped center plate (usually this would be a full bed of pasta) surrounded by a circle of baby clams. My daughters pasta alfredo was a bed of mediocre pasta in a tasteless sauce. The fig prosciutto pizza had almost no meat, just cheese and figs. It was as though they had run out of ingredients or were penalizing us for coming early to an empty dining room. The server fortunately was very attentive and gave us very good service. If it werent my daughters graduation with my parents as guests I would have sent everything back. the server asked me how the food was (since I was finished in like 5 minutes) and I said ok but I was still looking for the pasta. He laughed and agreed that the portions were tiny. Oh yea. And NO BREAD WITH THE MEAL. We had 3 pasta dishes and no bread? Really? Isnt this an Italian restaurant. Thats like serving spaghetti without sauce. The building is very nice but who cares; the food was sub-par. And by the way, when we left at 5:15, the place was still 2/3rds EMPTY. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Expensive and Ordinary sums it up.

We dined here for the first time on a Saturday night in January 2015. The atmosphere was so much more "diner" than we expected. All low top tables, crammed into a couple of rooms with red and white checkered table cloths... and way too many kids for our dining preferences. The server was fairly pleasant, but seemed irritated and impatient with her tables. We ordered drinks (good selection of beer and wine) and the goat cheese appetizer. It was one of the saddest appetizers Ive seen in a long time. It was supposed to be a "goat cheese fondue with marinara, kalamata olives and toast points." There were four tiny olives. Four. More of a garnish. The toast was decent although we preferred the fresh baked crusty bread that came out with olive oil and our drinks. There was hardly any goat cheese in the appetizer! Maybe 1/2 ounce. The rest was all marinara. Very disappointing. For main courses, we ordered the filet mignon and the sirloin. The filet was FANTASTIC but the broccolini was burnt tasting. The sirloin was ok, but far less superior to the filet of course. The risotto that came with the sirloin was in a terrible presentation. The beans were cut up into the risotto and piled unceremoniously underneath the steak. They missed a presentation opportunity for sure. All in all, we might go back if we have a gift card, but otherwise there are so many other restaurants in Grand Rapids -- we probably wont waste our time with this one.

We had eaten at Mangiamos several years ago and enjoyed the meal as much as our visits to other Gilmore locations, however our experience on 3-11-16 was VERY disappointing! My wife ordered a pizza that was dry and tasteless and I ordered the Ahi Tuna that it was the strangest Ahi Tuna combination I have ever had. My wife ate one piece of pizza and when the server asked about boxing it up he asked if she liked it and she made a shrug and said not so much, not wanting to make a fuss in front of the couple we were dining with, the rest has been thrown away. My Ahi was so bland that if not for the cheap bean concoction it was served on would not have been awful, this was nowhere near a $20+ meal. We arrived at about 5:30 PM and even talked about our surprise that there were so many empty tables and that apparently we really didnt need a reservation. Come on Gilmore folks you need to get a fix on this location and the menu. My advice try a different Gilmore Resturant.

My wife and I went for dinner tonight 7/9/16 but left due to rude service as we entered and while waiting to be served. If it matters we are an African American couple which might of been a reason for this rude service. When we entered the manager John D....ski (not sure on the spelling) looked confused and asked my wife "What do you need" she responded to say "to have dinner" (this was before I came in). The response shouldve been something like welcome and do you wish to be seated in the lounge or dining room. I had not came in to witness this exchange but saw there was confusion when i finally approached. When we got seated and no one came to our table after sitting too long that was the last straw. We got up to leave not before confronting John about what he had said to my wife and I expressed my opinion we felt not welcomed so we are leaving. No apology or fake concern would be accepted. We will not be coming back to this establishment.
