I dont eat at Japanese restaurants very often, so it was a nice treat when I went out for dinner here with family. First off, the food here is pretty well-cooked and even garnished to look delicate. Most of us ordered the American Dream roll, which came with "gold flakes"; I dont know exactly what those gold flakes are, but they sure added a lot of appeal. The overall decor of this restaurant is set up to resemble what a restaurant would look like in Japan, except without the floor seating. Around the dining area, there are Japanese-related artworks, a sushi bar, fancy bathrooms, and even a small corner dedicated to karaoke, complete with a television set and ceiling-mounted speakers. However, there are several notable things that discouraged me about the decor. The floors are stained in some spots (and in some cases had yet to be cleaned); the mens bathroom had a lingering odor, which made using it somewhat uncomfortable; some parts of the ceiling had water damage; a plate for an electrical outlet was missing; the walls look like theyve seen better days, too. The staff that works here is what appears to be a mixture of American and Asian descent. We had no real issues with them, and they were courteous in ways such as filling our water, and at one point, discussing how our food was coming along in the kitchen. The food can take a little bit to get here (it was about 30 minutes for the five of us that were there). With some work on the decor, this can very well turn out to be a great place to dine if you want to experience nice, authentic Japanese cusine.

Although I have not been there in a year (I have relocated 70 miles away), I believe Izakaya Sanpei has the best sushi and Japanese food ever! Every time I eat at another Japanese Restaurant/Sushi bar, I constantly compare them all to Izakaya Sanpei and they ultimately fall short. I am sorry to hear the review about being improperly charged, but Ive never had an experience like that in all the 3 years I went there and I ate there at least twice a week. No other restaurant has been able to compare to their food, particularly the way they prepare their salmon skin rolls and the Nabeyaki Udon. They are simply the BEST!!!

The food is outstanding. I joke (but not really joke) with my boyfriend about how the donburi changed my life. Prices are very, very reasonable, especially considering the portions and quality of the food. The only reason I didnt give 5 stars was because our waitress rushed me into placing my order. We were seated for less than 5 minutes and we were asked 3 times to place our order by two different people, and the third time, she wouldnt leave so I could look over the menu in peace. I felt EXTREMELY badgered and harangued. If the quality of the food and prices werent so good, I doubt that we would be back.

I am so disappointed at how dishonest this restaurant is. I went in to order sushi as a take out. My bill came out to $10.60 and payed with my visa card. I left a dollar tip in cash just to be nice since it is a take out. And 0(zero) tip on the visa. Much to my dismay the charge on my account is $12.71. I know its only $2 but imagine if they do that to other customers. I will be coming back in to discuss the unauthorized charge on my account. But never again to give them my business. So please what your wallets or at least your charges on your cards when you go to this establishment.

Izakaya Sanpei is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the area. A place a took a date in high school and now take my family. The place closed down for a few months after the owner died. Fortunately, the new owners keep the tradition of quality food and sushi. This place is not just a sushi bar. It is also an izakaya. Which is like a neighborhood pub. Which means that along with sushi you can get traditional favorites. Like nabe mono. A little on the pricey side, but for good reason. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in good Japanese food and not some cheap sushi shack.

You have to come here and order what the Japanese people order, a steaming cauldron of veg. And meat. (And its expensive! !) I was disappointed with the sushi selection and quality. I ordered the sea urchin and it was sour/spoiled! Japanese people do not order sushi so that would explain why it was shitty and spoiled tasting... The waitress FORGOT MY BOTTLE OF SAKE and 2 orders of yakitori!!!!! ***Americans DO NOT come on FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY! YOU WILL BE TREATED LIKE A SECOND CLASS CUSTOMER.

This is one of my favorite restaurants! I tend to go here a few times per month, mostly at lunch. Lunch prices tend to be a little better, and the portions are very generous! While I havent personally tried their sushi, my friends all rave about it. My personal favorite dishes are the kamo ramen and beef curry. In fact, the curry here is the best Ive had outside of Japan! They never charge for green tea, and its some of the best green tea served in the area. I highly recommend it!

While Sanpei does have excellent sushi (the white tuna sashimi is my favorite) the also have amazing Japanese food. They carry a menu with more authentic Japanese dishes and its amazing. I had a friend translate for me, but their servers are all very friendly and can recommend a few dishes for you from that menu (just dont expect them to translate the whole thing! :) ) Sanpei is a great, local Japanese restaurant, with excellent food and staff. The new sushi chef is great!

Food is just okay- what I got was not that great. Got the teriyaki chicken bento box during lunch- chicken was incredibly dry and tasted like it was just reheated in a microwave. California roll was more basic than most Ive had before (no mayo). Salad had questionable freshness (tomato in particular). Didnt ask if the bill was to be split. Didnt give us the rice that comes with our meal until we asked. Miso soup was extremely salty. Server was friendly however.

Sushi/sashimi...2.5 stars Cooked food...2 stars Cleanness...1 star Decor...3 stars Service...1 star Walking to pick up my carryout, I observed the kitchen staff preparing food with their bare hands without using gloves. The ovacado in my rolls were a day old. It wasnt a nice green color instead it has brown spots. I end up tossing that in the garbage. My chichen entree taste spoiled. My salad and soup were okay but not the best.

Will never return to this restaurant. They refused to subsitute some sushi I did not like -unheard of in the U.S. When I complained to to manager, she did not utter one word; not sure she even spoke English. Food is, indeed, good, but there are many other Japanese restaurant where the food is just as good or even better, with more enlightened management

The sushi was overpriced for how good it was. I eat sushi often, and this place has the same price point as Shiro, which is better in every way. Great service, great staff, but I doubt Ill go there again... And for god sakes anyone who says this is the best sushi restaurant around obviously does not eat sushi so you should not listen to what they say
